Or avoid the main page entirely, bookmarking their regular haunts. A fan already has the emotional investment to do the above, a 40 year old who heard about it from a co-worker does not. You have 20s to pique the interest in him. Turn his spark into a fire. Miss it and he'll be gone. NO RE.

His eSports fan co-worker will continue to talk, but he won't bother any longer. Your one window gone.

Cool, but again TL writers don't finish their write-ups instantly. I'm seriously getting tired of posting this. Regardless of TL's spoiler policy, it'd be at LEAST a day before the TL write-up gets finished, edited, checked for quality and then finally posted. That day in itself is effectively enough time for people to watch VOD's, so even without trying to stick to a spoiler policy it's already done. What exactly is the reason for trying to disregard spoilers in the first place if what you're asking for isn't a result of spoiler fear but rather lack of manpower/time?

I don't think anyone is pushing for TL to rush-job their awesome 5-10+ page wrap-ups with in-depth analysis, interviews, recaps, etc.

This is more about the hard & fast BIG ticket news items, where you really don't need much content. It's not an article, it's just news (and pictures). It doesn't take that much time, and even volunteers can push that kind of content out within minutes. For example:

Stephano dominates IPL3, sinks Slasher!

image from rakaka.de

In dominating fashion, Stephano took out his Korean opponent FXO.(Z)Lucky in a clean 4-0 sweep today in the finals of IGN's IPL3 Origins tournament in Atlantic City, securing the grand prize of $30,000.

He took out several other strong players on his way to the finals including (T)TheStC, (P)Inori, and (P)RGN.KiWiKaKi.

With IEM Guangzhou results last week, this marks two major foreigner wins in tournaments with strong Korean competition in a row. Slasher's outstanding bet against this happening has now been thoroughly dismantled. He was heard to remark, "I'm fucked."

Discuss your thoughts on Stephano's powerful run here!

That took me about 20 minutes, most of which was spent finding a picture of Stephano with the trophy and trying to fit in a a shot against Slasher. Yet, even with so little content, I think it would go a long way to help bridge that hype gap from before a major tournament to it's exciting conclusion.

Exactly like this! But with a topic which won't let out on who the actual winner is, just teasing the awesome series. The only problem that might arise is that there might be 10 threads like that, so probably just sending it to a TL writer is better. That way he can just skim over them, select the best one and post it as a news post. No overflowing of basically mirror topics and no actual spoiler, until you open the news post. And hey, if you opened it, you can't bitch about it afterwards. It will have a giant SPOILER in front. n_≤

^ Basically this. I think stuff like this is great, just needs a little work. I think if you added a bit more, maybe mentioning other top placing players, who they went through etc and had a non spoiler title like "In a dominating fashion, IPL Winner wrecks opponent" it could make community news that very same day. The curious people who don't mind spoilers will open the thread & see it's Stephano, while those who do mind notice "IPL winner" & realize it'd spoil it.

Essentially I believe titles can be engaging without spoiling, and once the warning is there all bets are off on anyone who ruins their own experience. I don't think things should remain spoiler'd for a week, just 24 hours, enough time for people to wake up/get out of work/catch up with VOD's.

I can do something like this for MLG Orlando for example and I can post it quickly, within an hour after the event. I could even write something about other matches and contenders which I thought would be worth mentioning in preparation and have it ready in advance, to be finished after the finals. I can even take some screenshots of the stream and post 1-2 ok pictures and maybe update later if someone provides better ones. Only question is should I post it directly or send it to someone first?

PM Waxangel to ask him just in case. I'd imagine something like this would deserve it's own thread easily, but if its good enough (and he has time away from MLG/IEM) he might throw it together in a featured news post with that of others. The only problem there is that usually takes days to get out. :\ So yeah ask him if it's cool to just post one in SC2 General and hope it's good enough to get spotlighted/community news'd etc etc. If you get no response then just post it anyway and see what happens. Good intentions shouldn't be met with any warnings/bans.

Thanks a lot! I'll do that now !~

Yet you took 20 minutes to find the pic of the winner holding the prize.

Huh ? What does the time taken by the author to make the news articles have anything to do with viewers attention? Do you think those less than 30 second ads are made in less than 30 second or what. I am not getting the link. These are news that will expose TL visitors who otherwise doesn't know what is happening to what is the latest big news in the tournament scene.

Since the argument is about spoilers I have to ask you: wouldnt it be possible to put an article like this in a spoiler tag as well ? Having it on the front page only ruins it for some of us. Or is your article "with so little content" as you described it yourself more important than our experience ? If I want fast news without substance I'd try to find another site. Please don't make TL one.

It ruins it for some people, but it can make it for others. Why are you so much more important than those only casually interested that you can't avoid frontpage news until you are able to catch up?

And you are being way too melodramatic about it. A couple articles like this wouldn't exactly make TL some shabby no-substance news site. There are usually only 1-2 events worth this kind of attention a month, if that (October is an obvious exception). And although it has little content when it is put out, like any other news article, this type of news can and probably should be edited to add in some more facts, details, and links over the next few hours to help bridge the gap while we wait for the real full recap that TeamLiquid's writers excel at.

Yes, this kind of thing could be put up in a spoilered way (as others have suggested), but that runs contrary to the very point being made in the OP. This type of article would be targeted towards the people that just stumble upon the site, or are looking for an outlet after seeing the games. Spoilering and hiding it away would defang it and make it useless for that purpose. At that point, the live report threads we already have are about as good.

I feel bad for people who hate spoilers, I really do, and I'd love for there to be non-intrusive ways for them to avoid this kind of content. But it should be on them to avoid it, not the majority that either want it or wouldn't care or know the difference. If TL could find a way to put an option on your account to hide this kind of news post, or even some kind of separate spoiler-free front page, it would be the best of both worlds.

No matter how amazing the content is. Watching a VOD that I know the outcome to, there is this voice in my head that says this would have felt so much more amazing if I didn't how it ended.

That's simply how life works. Surprises burns impressions. You take famous movies with famous twists like Empire Strikes Back and Sixth Sense and watch them knowing what the twist is, you will never ever share the same reaction as those that watched it unknowingly.

Game 5 sc VS Nestea. Wouldn't be so legendarily epic if the result was broadcasted from the future 5 mins before it ended.

Also, I really need to point some damn bias correlation here. The last time a thread like this popped up, it was when Huk won DreamHack. Now it pops up again when Stephano wins IPL.

You guys didn't %*#(%*#() complain when Koreans won every major tournament. You guys didn't complain for any GSLs that happened. Seriously... WTF?

You wanna celebrate and get hype? Get together with people and have a after party. You don't need a splash image to hit it home for you, when you actually watched it live.

That's because it is news when an upset happens. And it is a boner killer for anyone to do work (wade through threads) for nothing that they have yet to form an emotional bond.

You already care for the series, thus you will work around skipping the main page avoiding people if you have to, to maintain the excitement of not knowing the outcome. But in return, you are turning away people who want to:

1) see the result and go on with their lives;
2) see the latest happenings including end of tournaments & winner announcements;
3) see what's all the fuss from that coworker/friend/Facebook was raving about on their page;

You could be hurting eSports with that attitude. A time limit as other posters have suggested is a reasonable compromise.

I would love to have a 20 minute "Starcraft Center" every day, or say 4x a week.

SOTG is decent, but I would really like a shorter show with gameplay highlights that are basically narrated. It would probably be hard to produce live, but it would be outstanding if you could pull it off.

All other tournaments are fine for this except gsl. More often than not, I watch the vods next day, so it would be a shame to have them spoiled. I already had this season's round of 8 spoiled by liquibets lol. I'm an idiot.

Could the user settings possibly hide these live reports with an option?

That would be nice, to be able to turn off/on live spoilers. It'd encourage user registration as well (If that's a goal maybe?).

I have difficulty watching anything (movies, real sports, starcraft) if I know the outcome. I think with things being less KST focused now, spoilers have become less important. I don't think it'd make sense for like GSL Ro8 to be instantly posted on the front page, but for an MLG, I think it'd be a lot more reasonable.

Some tournaments are far more VOD focused, some are far more live stream focused. I think it'd be best to keep that in mind for deciding what to front-page live.

I don't think putting something as simple as [SPOILER] in front of an amazingly written hyped topic would turn a newcomer away. Why should it, if he isn't involved in the scene too much it wouldn't matter to him if the topic has something like that in it as long as the article is amazing. I'm just providing a balancing point, which I think would make both sides as happy as possible. I know making everyone happy is impossible, but fuck it, I'm one of those stupid people who would still try to find a balance.

Otherwise, personally I would think that a huge picture of the winner holding the trophy coupled with a big heading at the top would be really flashy and cool. But as I said, I'm trying to find a balance, with which both sides would be relatively happy. XD

nono this would be a horrible idea

i use tl because its always nice and spoilerfree, there can be an article (IPL RESULTS) with pics and all but no spoiler instant ...

gosugamers was former the best starcraft site next to teamliquid but because they spoiler EVERYTHING the way you want it, its just a shit site nowadays.

think about europeans etc who cant watch it live, then we must work and can watch it 2-3 days later so why would it make sense to make us unable browse tl a half week ...

sry worst horrible idea !

Being Australian means that I miss out on A LOT.(Read: EVERYTHING THAT ISN'T GSL)

The VOD service of everything thus far (excluding Blizzcons HDR service) has been very disapointing to say the least. For this reason, if I don't see a game live, I simply can not join the community in discussion, and the games lose their appeal. Likely for the same reason I don't watch 2002's season of Ice Hockey.

The other aspect is quantity. At any given time there is a game, a tourney, a show match happening. Previous results are VERY quickly replaced by newer results.

I would personally rather see HDR become standard for MLG, IPL, IEM,
Typing www.teamliquid.net into your browser could bring you to a "Welcome" or "Enter" screen, and just to the side, you could have links to the latest MLG, IPL, IEM, or TLOpen HDR pages, which would be spoiler free.

I feel at times our champion (Most recently IdrA, and Stephano) don't get too much headline, front page action because people are too weary of spoilers.

TL;DR: If HDR was the standard people could watch on demand (VOD is so mis-leading. I demand games sooner than 4 days later) before rolling on over to Team Liquid.
Play the games!

I don't really follow e-sports, but I know many of the top players (the ones I read around the site / see casted by Husky), and I know the names of the major tournaments and usually know when they're happening. It's always frustrated me that there aren't tourney results on the front page because I WOULD like to know who the winners of the GSL etc. are, although for the most part I'm not going to watch it live or check results etc. Who knows, with more tourney result news on the front page maybe a lot of semi-interested e-sports fans would pay closer attention.

I think this thread helped the TL editorial team significantly, the user base *has* changed, more casual viewers are coming into TL's main page to see news breaking headlines than six years ago.

It is important to both the TL.net website and eSports to acknowledge this change in demographic.
To catch up with the times if you will.

This means a change in presentation format from information to news.
This means more eye-catching and attention grabbing headlines.
Spoil if you have to, generate buzz and end it with a bang.
Learn from the best. Websites or mass media that managed to retain their niche user base while attracting new viewers.

I wish TL the best.

While I hate spoilers, there is so much SC2 going on that it can be hard to keep up on what is interesting if you aren't on TL every day. Having some type of results displayed would help attract people to watch the games, even though you/they just got spoiled.

What makes a big difference for me, as to why SC2 SHOULDN'T be spoiled, is because SC2 isn't a team game, it's the performance of a single individual, and knowing who won kind of makes it very obvious who outplayed who, not all of the time, but most. Yes, this is the same for team sports, BUT there are plenty of players for it not to be so obvious who had the good plays, and SC2 matches are mostly shorter than any sports game. While team sports are also a struggle, SC/SC2 games are probably the most epic struggle between two opponents, knowing who wins just seems to ruin a lot of it for me. I know the content of the games is what is important, but spoiling it... spoils it.

While seeing results will be a good and bad thing, I don't think its entirely necessary, perhaps hyping and displaying the two players of the grand finals would be more appropriate, but thats my view.

Edit: I agree with BrahCJ also, good points.

I don't know that it's really "hurting" e-sports, but personally I find the anti-spoiler attitude irritating. I don't see why it's asking too much for people to be responsible for themselves if they don't want to be spoiled.

I agree with OP actually. I had to go to bed (EU time) before the IPL3 finals (and the second semi finals), but next morning I immediate went on www.teamliquid.net/ipl to see who won. I still watched the games afterwards and I was NOT disappointed

Personally, not knowing the results of a match make watching the replay more exciting. Maybe not as exciting as seeing it live, but it still has that cliffhanger feeling in the tense spots. If there was a match occurring that I cared about, I should know when it is taking place. Therefore I should know not to go to the front page of TL if they are going to show the results. But then there should be an easy to reach section on the site that I can initially travel to, bypassing the front page, that lefts me access the VODs spoiler free.
Live every day to make the world a better place :)

Why should the scene suffer by having to contain their excitement because a few stubborn people insist on visiting TL before they watch the games? If it's so important for you to not get spoiled, watch the damn games instead of visiting a community website that's about discussing the game

Take a look at the "On Air" section to the right, how many of those events or streamers would you have access to if you weren't allowed to visit the TL front page?

... all of them? The sidebar is accessible from anywhere on TL, not just the front page.

I think having news and big headlines on the front page would be tremendous.

Or as this guy put it:

I'm for celebrating victories and HUGE stories, the bigger the commotion the better, forget tiptoeing onto the competitive sports scene, we need to plow through it.
