Don't forget that IGN Prime is providing bonus streams for its subscribers at http://www.ign.com/prime
Also, in addition to following along at home on the TeamLiquid live report threads, the TL IPL portal, and our own brackets and score sheets, you can follow our (relatively) new Twitter account, @IGNProScores! This is where all of our results will be tweeted out first, while @IGNProLeague will contain more general information and storylines from the tournament! Follow both to stay fully on top of the tournament occurrences. =)
They will play out until the top 4. 1-4 will be seeded randomly against the bottom four from pool play, 5-8 seeded against third place pool players, 9-12 against second place pool players, and 13-16 against the pool play winners. Now do you folks see why seeding in the pool play is so important? Especially when you go from $1,000 prize money in the ro32 to $2,000 in the ro16. =D
Wow, i expected the list to be a lot bigger. I thought there were more Koreans getting sponsored to go to IPL?! I hope there will be a lot of last minute sign-ups... and as a Euro, i hope a few more EU players decide to go. Although the list is stacked with very good players, there are still oppertunities to make the championship bracket for top players.
Hmm shame only 2 koreans in the open bracket from FXO. Would have thought more would try to fly out with this huge prize pool. Well 3 when you count puma, but he's on EG.

Because the mass majority of the Korean players are in pool play.
Yes, i know. But since IPL 3 has a huge prize pool, i was excepting more Koreans in the Open tournament aswell. But i am more than happy with the koreans in the group
wow not as many signed up as I thought, I'm surprised considering this is so much better prize pool than an average MLG event! gogogo more people sigup its going to be an amazing event!!
No Chance makes me sad , I was hoping we'd see him again. Also not enough Europeans. Still the open bracket looks like it should produce some interesting results.
I was hoping for more Koreans and Europeans. There is so much money in this. Top16 is not that difficult with this player pool and nets you already 1000$.
And you could combine the trip with MLG Orlando or IEM New York.

Yeah where are all the euro teams? They can't complain about small prize pool like mlg and tough system because there's 16 open spots to be had for a guaranteed 1k!

Do you know how much a round-trip ticket from Korea to US is? More than $1000, and that's just the flight alone. Not to mention they would have to front it, and theres no idea how long IGN will take to pay out prize money. Not really easy for the majority of Korean players.

I know this. For top Koreans it would still be a good investment. And there are sponsors like SK, coL and FXO who bring Koreans to events. Only FXO brings 2.

Totally yeah. MLG is ridiculously hard to play and the first place is only like 5k. Compare to this is mehh

top 16 of the open tournament with only 26 "notable players" (and some of those 26 are clearly not code S level). I guess the invited/qualified players don't have that much of an advantage.

For those that are under 21 that wanted to attend.. I wonder if buying a players pass and getting crushed in the first round would be a good way to be able to see the event. I'd assume they would give you a players pass so that you could then view the rest of the event and not get the boot.

He has written and performed several very popular StarCraft 2 parodies, like "Dan" and "When I'm Grandmaster." He performed at NASL and we're happy to have him participating at IPL 3! =D
No Ret, TLO or Tyler is surprising. Tyler lives in the US and TLO and Ret will be coming over for MLG later in the week. Edit, missed Ret on the Invite list

Wow there is hardly any players attending. Is it because of the overwhelming number of koreans? or just because the location is hella expensive? Either way- tournament itself should be interesting- just wish tastosis was casting it =[
I wonder why none of the sponsored NA teams are sending players to this, xsix, itsgosu, VP, vvv, iS all have many good players who get sent to mlg events but not here???

Open bracket seems small considering what it could be. Almost no Europeans and Koreans and even lacking major NA players. Axslav and Strifecro for EG, most of complexity, everyone from It's GoSu. It won't be a bad event by any means but it could have been bigger and more competitive probably. Almost all the pro players going will make it into the championship bracket.
Yeah there's a much higher chance making it to championship play here than it is to make it into pool play at mlg. Shocked at the lack of signups considering their prize pool dwarfs mlg's.
the lack of interest from teams is probably due to the MLG being a week after. there's so many tournaments this month, I'm sure most teams had to decide between MLG and IPL.

The invited/qualified players have free flight + free hotel. That is worth up to 2-3k. Code S level in open tournament is only Puma. 4-5 other could make a stand in Code A.

IPL has a much higher pricepool. And for foreign teams it would be nice to combine MLG (or IEM) and IPL and only pay one transcontinental flight.

so if a celebrity enters the tournament he shouldn't be in the notable players list? Notable players are a mix of pros and people that the fans will want to follow. I don't see what the big problem is with them including Gordon and temp0 in that mix.

Will this be in the next patch of Websters dictionary? I'm pretty sure notable means worthy of note, TempO and Gordon Hayward both fit that category.
I am sure the IPL crew is disappointed to have so few euros and usual no-names signing up like it's the case in MLG. I don't understand why. The prize pool is better, there is 1000$ for every player in the championship bracket, the publicity around it is worldwide. The sole reason would be that it's in October where Blizzcon, 2 IEMs, MLG Orlando happen, so I guess teams don't have unlimited budget.
I hope the IPL crew provides us with the best entertainment there is. gl&hf
Edit : There is only 63 players in a bracket designed to contain 256 players. Easiest Open Bracket EVER ! Why 2 Bo3 and you are in.
Ps : I guess it will be less work for the Liquipedia page ><
hoping for some last minute sign ups but this is pretty odd... thought the koreans would definitely try to put together something or at least 'foreigner sponsored' teams like col.mvp and FXO.

MLG didn't fill it's whole open bracket for a long time. Even then it's mostly lots of walk overs and randoms getting stomped with a few pros getting some unlucky draws.
Let's hope IPL rigs the open bracket, so only good pepole get to the championship bracket, and we don't end with pepole like Puma and Demuslim knock each other out.

adjective 1. worthy of note or notice; noteworthy: a notable success; a notable theory. from dictionary.com doesn't mean that he has to be playing at a high level, just has to mean that he is going to be widely recognized. I got the player pass for the player's lounge access (not really interested in playing the games out). So there's only 63 total for the players so far, counting the full player list+notable names in the qualifier.
Just want to verify, can we buy Saturday and Sunday passes at the venue? Don't want to drive all the way there to find out this isn't possible. Thanks.
I can't figure out how you sign up for it from the IPL or Playhem site... when you're not logged in, their main page has a 'sign up' button for IPL3, but as soon as It makes me log in...I can't find it?
It doesn't matter who is categorised as notable or not. It's just a list of names for the OP. it doesn't affect anything. What happened to Leenock? Wasn't he supposed to be coming to this tourney?

A bit disappointed with the list tbh. I can understand players not going to MLG with their much smaller prize pool, but IPLs much larger pool and 1000 USD just for getting into top 32 seems to me like a much better deal.
Lots of high level Koreans or even EU players would have a very high chance of making the trip worth it purely economically, and thats without taking the exposure into account.

I seriously doubt so. You can not draw conclusions from previous MLG events and this tournament.
First few of the koreans here are top top Koreans, none of the players are in MVP, Bomber or Nestea caliber imo. Most of these Koreans has also been beaten by foriegners recently, Stephano defeated both Ryung and MMA just a couple of weeks ago and Puma lost 2 matches straight to Mana, Thorzain took down Hero etc.
And another big difference between this tournament and MLG, the foreigners attending IPL 3 are actually the best performing as of this time.
Some top foreigners are missing like Sen, Mana, Fenix, Sase etc, but still a lot better players then in MLG. A korean will probably take it still, probably be 2 Koreans in the final too but beyond that im not so sure. Stephano defently has a real shoot at it with his current performance and players like Thorzain, HuK, IdrA, Ret and DeMuslim are not far behind.
MLG system looks like it is designed to make foreign scene look bad. Like, yeah, lets invite some koreans, we take Bomber, Losira, MC, MMA and MVP. Thats look good. And then we put them in pool play against our top seeded foreigners Incontroll, Drewbie, TLO, Haypro and Machine.
No shit koreans bet the crap out of foreigners in every MLG!
Half of those "notable" players I wouldn't call notable at all.
Looking forward to it though but it feels sad that there are hardly any European players. Makes me think there wasn't any EU qualifier for some reason.

I dont think you understand this correctly, open bracket is 256 players after 4 rounds 16 players will advanced to championship bracket to join 16 people from invitees and online qualifiers. (its double elimination so sometimes even more than 4x bo4)
That means to win 1000$ you need to win 4 x bo3 (or more because of double elimiation system) to get into top 16... and in open bracket you got at least 25+ well known players like:

But how do you fill a 256 player bracket with only 63 players?... By skipping 2 rounds.
Seriously, with such a small player list, if you get lucky with the bracket, this might be a better oppertunity for a random AC visitor to make money then the average casino game.
I'm quite surprised. I've been at a mtg grand prix a few years ago and there are a lot of people that just like the competative environment of such an event, while realising they have zero chance to win (like me). I would have though more casual players (or local player) would attend, even if it's just to get knocked out of the tournement by a notable player. Maybe ladder is enough of a competative setting for people not to care about a IRL tournement? Or maybe there is too little randomness for people to even want to try there luck.
I really hope the spectator passes don't sell at the same low rate, because i would like to see IPL4 as a IRL tournement as well. which reminds me that i still have to get my IGN Prime subscription for the panels and stuff.

I think it's you who don't understand. True the open bracket can accept 256 players, but if you look at the list there are only 64 or so.
Winning 2 bo3 (before loosing 2 bo3) should guarantee a place in the top 17. I don't think there are many tourney where you can make 1000$ so easily, especially if you consider most of those players are not even pro.

You guys dont get it... Even if they will not fill all spots and there will be for example 64 players (I dont believe in that scenario) Even then you will meet someone well known in 1st round (probably) and 2nd round (for sure). So still its not going to be easy 1000$ like Redox was trying to say.
MLG got same tournament format and Open Bracket is always almost full, so even if 3 days before IPL3 there is like 60 people signed it doesnt mean its closed list.
Edit: Ok nvm, I just saw in rules "60$ entry fee to open bracket" thats why they will not fill 256 spots for sure, but still to get to championship bracket and get 1000$ you will have to win at least 2x bo3 with well-known players...

I agree, with a winner loser bracket system it's less likely that a player will make the championship bracket without facing a notible player. But if the bracket is completely random (and i don't think they have a ranking they can rely on) it's possible that all top players are consentrated in one half of the bracket. IIRC MLG uses a ranking system to create the bracket... this will result in a more balanced bracket (with exception of first time Koreans) and make it less likely a nobody reaches the later stages of the tournement. I'm not aware of a similar system for IPL3.

Well, even if a "no name" does make it to the RO32. They will just face one of the invitees or pre-tournament qualifiers from pool play and almost definitely be eliminated in the RO32.
Although I sure do hope they seed based on TLPD International ELO or something like that. Everyone not in the database should be treated as ELO = 0 and then randomly put into the brackets are the rest have been seeded.
But I won't be too upset if its completely random. There are only maybe a dozen players in the open bracket that have a legit chance of going deep into the championship bracket. So as long as the majority of them don't eliminate each other in Round 1/2 of the open bracket it's not a big deal.
And even then, there are maybe 5 players in the pool that are contenders to actually win.
The open bracket is nice and cool. But I don't think it attracted the player pool I (or anyone else) was hoping it would. I'm honestly surprised more europeans didn't come over.
people dont sign up to play in open bracket cuz it's too stacked. only reason i did it was because it's like 10$ more than the spectator pass, WHICH THEY JUST STARTED GIVING AWAY FOR FREE

But since it's double elimination you need to actually make it to the round of 8 in order to secure a top 16 spot. Because theoretically, you can make it to the round of 16, lose in the winners bracket, then immediately lose again in the losers bracket falling to 17+ place so you don't advance.
So given a 64 man bracket you would need to win at least 3 rounds. And of course, more people can sign up still so some people will need to win an additional round.
Please let this be an awesome event!! I fear that the number of actual viewer will be disappointing and hope to be proven wrong. MLG is great, but this is on an even larger scale at the moment, why don't more people recognize this, why doesn't this receive the hype it deserves? T_T

well im hoping this goes much better than its sounding, as i would rather see IGN win over MLG. as MLG has terrible prize pools and other issues on the player side....
Best of luck to our 2 competitors: AuRora PMS and KiFirE!!!! And best of luck to all players out there as well! Looking forward to meeting some new faces this week!

Just want to verify, can we buy Saturday and Sunday passes at the venue? Don't want to drive all the way there to find out this isn't possible. Thanks.
They had weekend passes, dunno if you can still purchase them or not.
It's going to be a sick event, the open bracket is not as hard as I expected, I think all the pro players in it have a decent chance to qualify. But the real deal is going to be the top32... it's going to be crazy hard and honestly and don't give much of a chance to foreigner. On the other hand if a foreigner can win this this would sick as hell ^^

Free Streams
With the help of Justin.TV and IPL TV (IGN's own proprietary stream viewing webpage), absolutely everyone will be able to enjoy two free streams throughout the entire event! Both streams will be shown in 720p high-definition resolution. The Main Stage stream will be showing games from Pool Play on Thursday and Friday, and Championship Bracket games on Saturday and Sunday! We intend to show every single game from the Championship Bracket! The second stream will feature games from the live open bracket games on Thursday and Friday, and will be showing the League of Legends tournament all day Saturday and Sunday!
Prime Streams
We are happy to announce a partnership with IGN Prime and are thrilled to be able to provide four additional streams to members of IGN Prime live from the tournament floor! The additional streams available to Prime members include:
Player Vision - Main Stage - This stream will be a split screen feed showing the first-person view of each player in the current main stage game. You could turn on the free stream with our commentators and watch each player demonstrating their professional APM and never miss a thing!
Player Vision - Qualifier Stage - This stream will be a split screen feed showing the first-person view of each player in the current qualifier stage game!
LiveU Roaming Backpack Camera at Caesars - This camera will be wandering around the main stage area interviewing players, behind the scenes in the player lounge, and throughout the crowd.
LiveU Roaming Backpack Camera at Bally's - This camera will be out and about in the Bally's area, streaming the open bracket competitor area, interviewing players, behind the scenes footage, and talking with spectators.
Bug note: This is a work in progress, for example if you click on a Prime stream then you will be locked into that and need to refresh. We are also working on split screen!
IGN Prime is a service that offers discounts on games, exclusive access to video game beta tests, VIP access at events (like IPL 3!), strategy guides, tutorial videos made by professional gamers, and more! The service is $6.95 per month, $49.95 per year ($4.16 / month), or $79.95 for 2 years ($3.33 / month). The more games you play, the more valuable the service becomes!
Question: I'm still planning on subscribing to IGN Prime (if i get my administration in order in time), because i want to see the panels... but it's unlikely i can watch it live, because i'm a Euro, have a job and have to sleep as well. Will there be VODs available for the Prime content? Will i have lifelong acces to VODs that are released during the time that i'm subscribed to IGN Prime or only have acces during that period?
Would be cool, but less important to me: Will there be an easy way to synchronize first person view VODs with the casted VOD of a game?

This is just a live event, i dont it has anything to do with the season 2 starleague Oo

Maybe they didn't want to / didn't have time to attend IPL3? If they were invited...
i never new tom cruise was a starcraft 2 player as well. Lol
Seriously cannot wait for this event, sick bunch of players and hopefully it will bring some cracking games. I for one would love to see Demuslim win this event as he is vastly becoming my favourite terran

Yeah really sucks that they are not participating. I believe they got no invite. :/
On the other hand they could play the open qualifier if they wnated. Its not like it is super difficult to get through that one.

From IPL Liquipedia page
The main event will be a 32 player Double Elimination tournament which will start on Thursday, July 14th 2011. The top 16 finishers from this event will be automatically qualified to the next online IPL which has yet to be announced.
Thinking about getting prime acc. What bonus streams actually means? Extra streams with some random games only? Or there will be any change of quality on streams something like that?
Sorry if already answered or if there is a note about that somewhere. If someone could link me to it I would be glad

Mana is definetely too young. He's not 18 and therefore not allowed to enter. Not sure about Nerchio.
HYYYYPED ! I just can't wait ! If I could I would just go for a 24h cryonics ! but well I have some GSL VODs to watch inbetween so I might survive though

+1.
Yep, +2 I guess. I would love some more info on the premium offer, especially for VODs

Look at the right of the big teamliquid logo in top of your screen, there's a countdown :p (I missed it too at first, and bitched about IPL not being in the TL Calendar :D) (but IPL still should be in the TL Calendar)
We're getting to see some top players that we don't get a chance to see much at North American events thanks to the qualifiers helping get them over here. This is probably going to be the strongest event outside Korea in terms of talent that we've seen yet.
Who cares if the open bracket isn't as deep as expected, if they run out of open bracket games to show, we'll have to "suffer" through more games from the stacked pool play.

Tournament is gunna be sick.
They are playing all the games from the pool play, regardless of the open bracket. Open bracket is stream #2

Wow, that´s really amazing news... I was also looking hard for the HD passes and couldn´t find anything. :D
If I have time to watch some games live, I´m going to buy Prime. First-person view will be amazing. :-) any chance to get that first-person view as VOD?
