I remember back in beta there was this interview with TLO i think it was by hd/husky and he said something about if you change your graphics settings a certain way it is a lot easier to see invisible units like observers

i've searched but i can't find it does anyone remember these settings or if this is even true?

i say this because i was watching byuns stream and he's amazing at killing observers and i think that is such a huge deal tvp

hadnt thought about this earlier, but does it get easier to spot observers standing still if you use the "zoom in"-feature? shouldnt it? to spot a stationary observer is almost impossible usually

Yeah zooming in and out let's you see cloaked units better. You can see ThorZain do it almost every TvP if you watch his stream.

I remember someone mentioning during tournament play that IdrA uses something like low graphic settings yet ultra texture quality. I don't have access to SC2 at the moment so don't quote me exactly, but it is something along those lines.

TLO is playing on everything low except textures and effect in Ultra.

After making some searchs myself, I noticed that the best way to spot observer is to play in extreme settings and to be sure of the position of the obs you can inser/delete (move camera on side) like Byun or just zoom to better see the observer.

I would like to know if, playing on low settings, there is something else that you could boost to increase the visibility of the observers. Because I can't play on extreme when I stream, the game becomes a bit laggy :s

I'm not completely against this, but at what point does this kind of thing get to the verge of cheating? I mean, sure, the cloaked units can't be targeted unless revealed, but still, it seems like it takes away some of the usefulness of cloaked units.

And yeah, if you were on the ball/lucky, you might see their cloaked units anyway, but that would generally be more unlikely than if you left settings on predetermined levels (e.g. low, high, medium, w/e).

I'm not saying don't customise your settings, but tailoring them to increase your ability to see cloaked units seems a bit underhanded imo.

no, you don't see cloaked units , u just see them better when u reveal them, that's the problem when u play on low

Oh, in that case, that's completely fine. Just the "making easier to see while not revealed" was what I was aiming my previous post at.

lol yeah this is totally unfair use of ...ingame settings x]

I remember distinctly that the method TLO uses was: everything on low except textures, which need to be on ultra. Optional are effects on ultra, which i use purely for a visibility thing.

and further you have the option to enter the
"simplifiedCloaking=0
simplifiedShaders=0" lines into the variables txt.
I get brain like a skull

it doesn't make them any easier to see while not revealed, but it does make them easier to see when revealed.

Any little help counts, if you can do it so can other people, as long as your not disobeying the ToS blizz wont care either. It doesnt give you that much of an advantage cause you can normally see moving cloacked units quite easy anyway.

Blizz patched that 'everythinhg but textures on low' thing out.
Well, you can still have it, but it doesn't make cloaked units any more visible.

I play on medium settings, high textures. I can see stationary cloaked fine (most of the time). A friend of mine asked about this. Is this a common problem? I am color deficient, I don't know if that matters (it shouldn't).

If you're zerg, you can delete only creep animation with saving all graphics (shaders, textures, effects, etc) on max

First, set your graphics quality to Low, then change the following:
Textures: Ultra
Effects: Ultra
Terrain: Medium (Optional)
Models: High
Unit Portraits: 3D (Personal Preference)

Textures: Ultra - changes the detail of everything - you'll be able to spot the cloaked blur easier. Put on Ultra if you have a 1gb+ graphics card.

Effects: Ultra - changes the detail of particle, ribbon, splat, explosions, dust, tread, and beams. I can't tell if cloaked units are easier to see, but I know that burrowed Roaches/Infestors are easier to spot with Effects on Ultra. The shadow/tread that appears when burrowed units move is larger, darker, and more noticeable when set to Ultra.

Terrain: Medium - creep looks nicer, makes no difference to cloaked visibility; set to low or medium, whichever you prefer.

Models: High - I believe this has to do with unit model animations - when set to low it uses the same animation for multiple units, like when a zealot or stalker warps it uses a generic warp animation. When on high, you can tell whether what kind of unit (zealot, stalker, sentry, etc) as it's warping, so make sure you set this to High.

I don't recommend changing the simplifiedCloaking or simplifiedShaders in variables.txt, it can mess with the graphics and personally I don't think it looks any better.
