I don't mean to diminish what has happened here, but remember words can only hurt as much as you allow them to (I know that it's a bit different when it comes to the people you love). SlayerS Fighting!!!!!!

Gogo Slayers_Eve! Hopefully she can get her skill level high enough to compete with her peers.

And why would anyone want Boxer to retire? Even if he loses all of his games it still fills me with joy to see him playing.

Decent response.

BoxeR - Will qualify for Code A again surely!!!

Eve - Will own some faces in GSTL hopefully and progress to Code A quals and beyond.

Jessica - You're a boss, keep fighting and shutting up the fools :D

Shame to see such a bad reception to what should be a welcome difference in eSports.

Well said, certainly though most of the foreign community has your (Jessica's) and the SlayerS team's back no matter what some troublemakers/trolls say.

For me the main issue is how much of the negativity is unrelated to Starcraft at all. Photoshopping Eve's face onto a porn stars body is really hurtful shit, and really isn't something that can be defended.

I am loving the initiative and people should stop flaming that she was only selected because she was a girl. Why? Because Jessica said it herself that it was because she was a girl! Jessica wants to see women in SC2 and so do I! So, unless you are gay, you should stop complaining about this...

This is part of the problem though. You are only happy to see Eve on the team because of her sexuality ("otherwise you must be gay"), and nothing more. If her sexuality is what leads you to give her a positive reaction, you can't be surprised that others attack her based on her sexuality.

It should either be respect her as a player, not a sexual creature, or not be surprised she is being targeted for her gender. Can't have it both ways.

The problem with gender started way before this though. Female gamers get obscene amounts of crap every time they place a game. Socially ostracized and verbally abused because they are different from the "norm". Every single game is like this, so it is understandable that the talent pool for female gamers is not a profound and that of male gamers. The segregation happened a long time ago. Unless someone steps up and takes a chance, the cycle will continue and male gamers will be overwhelmingly if not the only professional gamers around.

Bringing on Eve is hopefully the first of many and is (as I see it) a kind of olive branch to other females to become more involved in eSports. Provide a tangible goal through the abuse and taunts that IS disproportionately thrown at them and perhaps steadily make females less and less "closet gamers".

Her gender is indeed (sadly) a central focus here, you are right, but instead of taking it as giving massive group of people a chance to shine, many cynically see it in a shallow sexual manner. Normally we rarely see or give a game about the gender divide in gaming, Jessica brought it to the forefront and it willing to do something about it instead of letting it remain the status quo.

Hopefully there will be enough ambitious women playing SC2 and other games that they can have the luxury of selecting them purely on merit and skill, but right now that is only a small facet of the issue here. The larger issue is finding a girl willing to stand up publicly and call herself and aspiring pro-gamer without being target and disproportionately abused by the general public. Eve is once such female and instead of backing down Jessica and SlayerS is helping her forward in the face of this prejudice. (Which looking through a lot of the posts, there definitely is in the community).

Even if Eve showed up as the super hyper Gosu bonjwa of bonjwa's, the community at large would STILL have given her abuse and taunts for being a girl in gaming. Perhaps Jessica could have handled things slightly differently with regards to the GSTL, everything is better in hind-sight, but the public's reaction while semi-expected is still unacceptable. Which is why overall I support her decision to not back down to the trolls on this one.

Isn't there someone who plays sc1 and not a male... and doesn't get any of the abuse that you so claim... unfortunate that she couldn't qualify again...supposedly met jangbi or so...

there's no difference... not like this crude matter... only different in your mind...

hope they do well in the future and possibly not overreact to something insignificant...

Only TossGirl? Thats it? One person in BW, not even the same game. She did a lot sure, but she got a LOT of undue crap along the way, I'm sure. SC2 has no TossGirl yet, and only a small handful of women streamers, who can probably attest that their chat logs are not really about the game. It will take time, but Eve is just exposing a much larger issue in my opinion. One that is now being focused down on her.

I meant more like esports as a whole and listed sc1 as an example

but in reality, it is no mean feat for a female to reach Master level while laddering against males.

What.. I don't even have a reaction, seriously. How in gods name is it ANY different for a female to ladder in comparison to a male? You are making it out like because she is a girl who got to masters, she has done some huge achievement. Not to say that being masters isn't an achievement, but this is making out that it is specifically difficult for a GIRL to reach masters, how is this even true in any way? It is exactly the same.

I really appreciate you coming here and posting this. I'm a huge fan of SlayerS, and I always support you guys.

However, I must respectfully disagree with the decision. I am not here to disrespect Eve or SlayerS- but I will say that I have a fundamental problem if she is being paid a salary - The reason this is fundamentally wrong is because there are males who are working probably twice as hard as her and not getting money out of it. As far as research shows, there are not disabilities for girls in terms of Starcraft 2 ability as there are in many physical sports - so they should be expected to compete at the highest level against males.

How do you know how hard she is working? She could be busting her ass, man. You don't know.

And the fact that the usually physical differences don't apply here is precisely why this is a good idea. Women are underrepresented in esports to a degree that is probably unmatched in any other form of competition excluding dick measuring contests. If they are equals physically, then they just need the opportunity to excel, to get involved.

Now, look at the response that the esports "community" has given Eve. Doesn't it seem like maybe women could use a little help in the face of that?

This is a fantastic move, both the bringing in of SlayerS_Eve and bringing the hammer down on the punks harassing her (I say their punishment should be 10 minutes in a steel cage with SlayerS_Jessica).

I am not saying she's not working hard - I fully expect that she is, and I'm going to support her as a player!!! I don't have a problem with the fact that she's a female. I love that females are getting more involved. It's amazing and I hope it flourishes - but do you think every high level diamond male player got opportunities to play on Korean pro teams? Even high masters players? Even some of the Grandmasters players? No. You have to get to a certain level before you get noticed by high level pro teams.

She absolutely does not need a pro team to get to a masters level on the Korea server. Even as a B team gamer on SlayerS, how is she going to provide others with meaningful practice at that level? I understand that Diamond Korean means a lot more compared to the NA server diamond, but compared to the SlayerS players, how is that meaningful practice for the other players? Once she gets to a certain point, then I have no issue with her being recognized as a good player and being picked up.

However, I don't really see how you can argue against the fact that she was picked up because she's a female. She does not qualify in terms of her quality of play at all, despite the fact that she is quite good compared to the average player here. In terms of the crap she got, there was going to be negative response regardless of her sex or ethnicity, because of the fact that she was a diamond player. I absolutely think it's terrible what some people are saying, and nobody has ANY right to disrespect Eve or Jessica. Constructive criticism is acceptable, in my opinion. If this was a black person who was a diamond player in Korea and was picked up, people would be making all sorts of racist comments. People find something to be frustrated about and then direct it at whatever they can find - including sex, race, age, etc. - I think the only way for females to truly break into the pro-gaming scene is for more girls to WORK REALLY HARD and get on par with the best players out there. It has to be organic. Getting girls involved is one thing - and it's really important- but providing them with opportunities to play against the best in a pro house while not being on par with them is wrong.

Eve, Jessica, and SlayerS deserve better than some of the incredibly hateful comments that some people have posted. I will support Eve and the whole SlayerS crew - If Eve blows me away with her amazing play, then I will stand corrected. Until then, I hope for the best!!!

While the It Gets Better project is mainly directed towards LGBTQ people, the same message I think applies. That it'll take time, but things do get better, and the terrible things are not forever and people can change for the better. Cyberbullying is no different than normal bullying, only its easier to get away with worse acts online than in person.

Koreans aren't unique in being driven to suicide by this, it has happened to many lgbtq americans. Everyone should keep that in mind, that it doesn't matter what group someone belongs to, its always an extremely harmful act.

Being first sucks, but things will get better. I hope you can hold on SlayerS and Eve.

If you would have read the sentence after that, you'd see that she said it was just as hard for males to do. There's a higher concentration of males in masters, which is why she said that. Basically it's an uphill battle because she's one of the only females. It has nothing to do with ability.

Anyway now that the situation has been explained better, I don't think there was any overreaction here, and I hope Eve still ends up training to be a progamer.

@SlayerS Jessica:

If SlayerS believes Eve is a good fit for the team then people will just have to deal with it. The internet is full of opinions and a lot of negativity. Everyone has a breaking point and the trolls job is to discover it. I think they went too far by humiliating her like they did. She didn't deserve that. Nobody does for joining a team and wanting to play starcraft.

@Cella

Maybe the focus will shift now to winning another GSTL and fixing that bad start this season.

All Jessica is doing is hurting the scene for women. Women should not be treated any different than men when playing this game... Everyone is trolled at some point in their life. Hell there is a video of most of the pro male players doing that weird boy band dance that many people would consider "gay" or to have homosexual tendancies.. They didn't complain about it. Just because someone says something, or photoshops something, or makes accusations doesn't mean that it is real or serious. Just because Eve or Jessica is a girl doesn't make it any more wrong to slander against anyone else. To make people believe that slander against women is more offensive or somehow more wrong than slander against men is sexist and overall pretensious. I actually feel very sad for our online community to hold women in a higher postion than men in the sense of that we cannot insult women any more than we insult men, or that insulting women somehow has deeper or greater effect.
