GSL Code A Winner

Translated From PlayXP
Winner between
(P)Tassadar vs. (P)Puzzle
+ Show Spoiler +

(P)Puzzle
‘I want to take my revenge on LosirA.’
[image loading]
- You just won code A. How do you feel?
I was a bit worried because PvP can be so volatile, but I think I was able to win because I practiced a lot in order to stop 4 gates.

- In the first game, you went 3 gates and lost to a 4 gate.
I was nervous because it was the first game and got hit by some stalker shots which was the result of my poor reaction to the rush.

- You started off by losing the first 2 games.
I was angry. It felt like I did nothing during the first two games and just kind of lost, so I began to get angry at myself.

- By set 6, you started with 4 gates so often that it felt like you didn’t do 4 gate only for 2 games or so.
I don’t usually like to do 4 gate, but my opponent’s 4 gate was too strong. I could only match him when I went 4 gate as well. So I began each match with a defensive 4 gate. I think NSHoSeo protosses are definitely at a different level than most other protosses.

- You became the first person to advance to code S by winning code A.
Even last season, during the up and down matches, 6 out of 8 code A players advanced to code S. So getting into code S right away doesn’t seem to be that different. After I beat MMA I only had victory in my mind. I knew that I would advance to code S after I won that match. I feel great right now.

- How long do you think you will retain your code S spot?
I have said previously that some players in code S do not deserve it, but even with those people in there, I believe code S is an extreme challenge. However, I do not think I am that far behind any of them. As long as I practice hard, I believe the chance that I retain my spot is 100%. I believe I will keep it until I retire.

- You said before you wanted to face LosirA.
I have an overall losing record against him and BanBanssu. I also lost to him (LosirA) during the preliminaries when I felt like I could make it. So I want to face him even more because of that.

- It was the first PvP finals at the GSL and it was full of 4 gates.
I am not the only player who doesn’t like 4 gates. Many protoss players now prefer to play more standard now rather than doing that. But I guess it just is the NSHoSeo style to do this strategy. I think they just like to use strategies that are against the trend.

- Your ambition going into code S?
I didn’t practice as much as I should have to be perfectly sure to secure my victory in code A. So in order to win code S, I think I will need to practice like my life was on the line.

- Any last comments?
I want to thank Yong and cOre for helping me practice. Practicing PvP can be mindnumbing so we just crammed the practice in a short time. It hurts when you have to think so much about the matchup.
+ Show Spoiler +

Yeah, I imagine practicing PvP non stop for 7 days must make you go insane, because each first 5-7 minutes are just the same with a detail or two that can have an huge role. I can't explain weel but I understand his comment about PvP training (even tho I don't play P)

did puzzle knock dong rae gu out of code b in the finals?

i love these up-and-coming players when they finally hit code a, was so great seeing Bomber own up. I remember in January people were saying "wait until you see Bomber and Puzzle, they're code s material".
who else have we got incoming (dong rae gu or sage next?)

Let's not overhype Sage... remember when everyone said yonghwa and seed were going to be code S after that GSTL?

They are still good players and show up from time-to-time, but we haven't seem then in code A yet. Let's hold judgment on Sage for now...

Puzzle has always been hyped up but he was always back in the seat compare to the hype MMA and Bomber were getting. Its nice to see him in Code S as a strong Protoss. Every Code A champion and finalist has always had solid success in Code S. With players like Coca, Byun, Line and Puzzle, ZeNEX is finally starting to shape into a solid team.

yeah, sorry QTIP i am overhyping sage there probably. just wonder who really is next up... tbf sage did all kill, i think seed just won a couple with funky strats (i loved that guy!) but 1 GSTL isn't enough to be the next big thing.

edit: the point is, those in the know were hyping bomber and puzzle, rather than fools like me seeing 4 games and making huge assumptions. i want those in the know to tell me who is up next

You're not a fool at all man. My jaw was on the floor during Sage and Seed's games as well... they showed some fantastic play. Unfortunately the sample size is small, but that doesn't mean they won't break out in individual tournaments as well. :D

Congrats Puzzle! Glad to see the talent pool in code S rising. I think you'll be an excellent addition. Thanks for the 5 liquibet points :D

Edit:
Also, I expect Puzzle to do really well in Code S. Has anyone noticed that every Code A champion has gone on to do reasonably well in code S? Top, Losira, Bomber... Puzzle! The first 3 have now all made the top 8 in at least 1 tournament, and I wouldnt be surprised to see losira and bomber in the top 4 this GSL. Top got top 4 in the ST. Code A winners are legit

the thing that impressed me about sage was that he was a knowledge-based player, scouted so well to anticipate what was coming up. that should you'd hope translate well into consistency. Seed was perhaps more gimmicky if i recall. I still always check code b to see if he made it through though. Good luck to both of them!

being greedy for great protoss players though, i should be happy with Puzzle, Huk, MC, trickster, alicia and killer! edit: and tassadar ofc!

Congrats to Puzzle, after that interview I really look upon him as a really deticated player, plus I always like other protoss players who dislike 4 gate and the huge amount of coin flipping that goes into PvP. I'll definitly have to go back and watch his games against MMA and I am already excited to see his group in next months code s.

What I get from that interview about PvP is that not 4gating is a mutual agreement to both tech to something that may or may not hard counter something else. 4gate is definitely not dead as shown in those games.

I'm reaaally high on Puzzle right now, and I don't see him being anything less than the best protoss behind MC. He looks solid in all matchups, and there are times where you get the "holy shit" micro moments from him.

Notice how he said "great" games, which probably implies entertaining. Bomber vs. Losira was the legendary match where Losira danced his zerglings instead of finishing off the tech lab, and lost as a subsequent result. Bomber vs. MVP was also epic, where MVP came from 70 supply down to win. Two of the most entertaining games in GSTL history, imo.

Bomber vs. MVP was also epic, where MVP came from 70 supply down to win. Two of the most entertaining games in GSTL history, imo.

ahhh la danse macabre... oh wow i forgot that was bomber Losira did that against

i think those finals overall were the most entertaining starcraft games i've ever seen. i'd still say letting MVP come back so hard, while entertaining, was not a good omen for being a top, top player. turns out i'd be wrong

Thank Phosgene for translating the GSL interviews That looks like a LOT of work, but let it be known that I definitely enjoyed reading them.

Also Protoss fighting!

Haha, yeah. He also appears to have a wicked work ethic as evidenced by his responses to the interview, so hopefully he'll have a good run at code S.

Yeah I don't think Puzzle will get out of Code S anytime soon.

It hurts when you have to think so much about the matchup.

Indeed it does Puzzle.

I think NSHoSeo protosses are definitely at a different level than most other protosses.

Both Puzzle and MC have said this and that's saying quite a lot. I wonder who else NSH has on their protoss line up because San, Tassadar and Sage have proved to be quite great players. (Vanvanth doesn't count)
Go go Alliance.

Glad I didn't stay up to watch the finals, but aside from really boring pvp Puzzle deserves to be in Code S the kid if a beast and wouldn't be surprised to see him going deep next season.

Please, please, please let Puzzle be a strong #2 protoss behind MC. We have a litany of strong Korean terrans and a couple of very strong #2 zergs in DRG and Losira, but no protoss has taken up the mantle as a contender to MC for #1 protoss. I hope Puzzle lives up to his reputation as the protoss Bomber.

did puzzle knock dong rae gu out of code b in the finals?

i love these up-and-coming players when they finally hit code a, was so great seeing Bomber own up. I remember in January people were saying "wait until you see Bomber and Puzzle, they're code s material".
who else have we got incoming (dong rae gu or sage next?)

Nope. That was oGsHero who knocked him out.

thanks.

yeah, sorry QTIP i am overhyping sage there probably. just wonder who really is next up... tbf sage did all kill, i think seed just won a couple with funky strats (i loved that guy!) but 1 GSTL isn't enough to be the next big thing.

edit: the point is, those in the know were hyping bomber and puzzle, rather than fools like me seeing 4 games and making huge assumptions. i want those in the know to tell me who is up next

Here's something you didn't know.. Sage has been the highest ranked Protoss on the Korean ladder for almost 2 months now.

His blink stalker sandwich in Game 5 (where he took out a much superior army) was beautiful.

It really opened my eyes to the possibilities in SC2
