I can't see how the focus would be taken out of the competitive side. Competitive players would still be playing ranked games. There would only be only more players actually playing the game, total ranked and unranked. That is supposing "competitive" people would bear sinking a few divisions and not leave, dejected :p.

Hey you can still love starcraft and not ladder. Nothing wrong with that. The instant you purchase a game with a ladder system in place and come up with this bullshit "fear of laddering" garbage you sound like you just wasted your money. Hate to break it to you. You rejected the game not the other way around. RTS isn't for everyone.

I also have ladder fear. When SC2 got released I reached diamond pretty fast and then swtiched to team games. Meanwhile other 1v1 diamond players have become a lot better than me and I was "scared" to return to 1v1 for a while. But since I bought a cheap second handed account (with a gold 1v1 rank) I enjoy 1v1 ladder a lot more since I cant lose my 1v1 diamond rank on the other account.

It's a serious illness... i'm so scared to ladder at times.. I got rolled three times in a row last night ((

Why focusing me? I don't have ladder fear, I'm a mass gamer :\/

I think a good solution would be a universal ladder. I am afraid of getting dropped from Diamond to Platinum more than I am afraid of losing rank 12 on my useless division. If I was being ranked bronze - masters in the same sort of groupings as iccup, then I would feel less pressure mainly because i knew there were 8000 other people with the same problem, and I could see them.
I think the hardest part about ladder fear is getting over yourself. No one will ever care about you and your rank #1 spot in your Platinum division. Hell, no one will ever care about you and your rank as #1 masters. Being ranked on a universal ladder would give everyone humility. Being dropped from rank 800,247 to 800,262 in the diamond *bracket* or elo or partitions wouldn't matter to anyone, and so I think ladder fear would go away.
Blizzard kind of hyped it up to make people think that doing well on ladder means anything, but in reality that is the last thing that people care about in the starcraft 2 community compared with the myriad tournaments for thousands of dollars that are going on daily.

Personally I dislike the ladder because while it says it's ranked, it isn't.
You don't see your rank and not even your losses anymore before Masters.
Yes, there are division ranks but until Masters they are more like "who is more active" than "who is simply better as a player".
So if you are under Masters, I don't really see a reason to "fear laddering" unless it's the fear of playing somebody you aren't familiar with which isn't bad at all imo. It isn't bad to be cautious. And if you are Masters, you probably have played enough ladder to not fear it.
I personally love Starcraft, be it BW or SC2, and I would love to practice SC2 more but when the ladder doesn't show your direct MMR or Rank, I find it pretty difficult to actually find motivation to practice in it.
"Well get practice partners" you might answer. I have tried that and am looking for more right now as while I don't want to address them as "collectables", I don't have enough.
Anyway, I would disagree with the topic question.
You don't need to ladder if you don't want to. TL is a pretty good source on finding people to play with(although personally I have gotten pretty unlucky with that). Ladder isn't something you must play to "properly" play SC2.
The map editor has done wonders to provide additional content to SC2 and custom maps might even be more popular than the game itself, or might get more popular as the game goes on.
Starcraft 2 has multiple 'games' inside it: a DotA variation, although it has been said that it's bad, hero defence maps, tower defence maps, you name it. And more is probably going to come.

I just thought I'd weigh in on how I got over it.
I had big ladder fear for the whole time that SC2 has been out. I hated that there was nobody to blame but myself.
I took a break from the game for a while, and when I came back I said that I would play with the sole purpose of improving. The ladder rank only means something if I care about it, so if I don't care about it, there will be no fear.
I switched races and was playing ladder against people I couldn't beat with a new race, and after a good solid day of nothing but losses (and watching the replays after every game), I felt like I had more to learn when I lost than when I won. So now I figure that losing is more important than winning because it helped me figure out what I was doing wrong.
I am now on a pretty steady increase in my division. I just have to remind myself that no matter how much I win, losing is good as long as you're learning something from it.
TL:DR
I learned to love the losses, because it's the losses that lead directly to improvement.

Guess the ladder fear has something to do with people thinking that they cant play on the 1v1 ladder without competing, putting additional pressure on the fact that that in a 1v1 it's all up to your own abilities.

Oh sorry I'm not focusing you. I get carried away when I type sometimes. Just people with that mentality. :D

As much as I hate bnet 2.0, I have to admit the ladder does a good job of quickly finding matches against equally skilled people. I just wish I could practice one matchup on one map like with iccup. There's plenty of custom games and team games for people who don't want to 1vs1 ladder.
|
I don't really have ladder fear, but I do have to be in a specific mood to ladder. SC2 is an intense game, and I'm not always feeling up to playing it, but that isn't the ladder's fault. I can see how people might get some use out of a system that lets them do unranked games where they say something like I want to play on the following maps with the following opponent preference (race wise), and it will try to matchmake you up against someone who wants to play against your race. It would let you practice in a little less important scenario.
Sometimes I really want to practice some mid game thing, and then I get cheesed 3 times in a row on the ladder. Whether I win or lose those games doesn't really matter to me, just that I didn't get to practice what I wanted to, and that turns me away sometimes.
|
Good to know that other people experience the same fear as me. I will usually just play a custom 1v1 on Zel-naga caverns and get destroyed by a master league player or practice vs. the computer.
|
Ironically, the only way to rid yourself of the "fear" is to play A LOT. People just need to ignore the fear and keep clicking the search button. The negative feelings go away in time.
I have friends who experience this, and are somehow convinced that if they practice more in customs and in team games it will suddenly go away. It won't. Just play.
|
I don't feel like laddering because I don't feel the need to acquire a permanent loss on my record for making a mistake that I could be making in a 1v1 custom.
And to be honest, the reason why I dislike laddering at times is that half the people who decide to queue are going to lose, and I can't win them all...
Much more fun smashing diamond players in obs maps

Grow balls, get your mindset right, it's all about your own self-development and do not take a loss as the world is going under because of it, remember this is only a game, only you can improve your play and nobody is forcing you ANYTHING. There is ladder reset every 6+ months so you better train to get better each season if you wanna have progress. This game is not for pussies, so overcome your fear, get out there, have fun and get the adrenalin running which you like!
Set your self some small do-able goals like increase to first TOP20, then TOP10 in your division and after that ladder promotion. A loss is a loss, so what, don't make it out to be more than it really is.
|
What's your solution to ladder fear? Hint: it's not in a patch. If you're afraid to play ladder, you're probably taking the game to seriously, I'd be willing to bet you think you're better than you are. I guess don't do it if you don't enjoy it, but if you're seriously gung ho about enjoying it then I recommend pumping yourself up first. Cold shower and a slice of lemon+ hard slap to the face before every game. It'll slow down your laddering a bit, but at least you'll feel like a MAN for the first couple minutes of the game.

Why is everything hurting sc2 these month. I must have missed the topic of the month discussion damn. Some topics are really scary and this is one of them. I mean its hurting sc2 of course because less people play the multiplayer, but its nothing the game can do to change this, so its not really hurting the game. Those people will most likely be people watching tournaments which is more important for sc2 then playing ladder ;o .

I have not heard about it. You should have given a definition in your post.
From reading the first replies I suppose you mean that people are afraid of playing ladder because they could lose but this doesn't really make sense to me because they can lose any other type of game as well and also the losses are not even shown in the profile anymore, which I think is pretty stupid btw and if anything this is the thing that should have been made an optional thing to turn off.

I loved laddering when in bronze, silver, gold. but now that i am in platinum its the limit of my current skills.
most of the time i just want to play a casual ladder game, not full on max effort into the games.
this means that if i want to play a casual ladder game at my current level i will definitely lose.
which sucks of course. this is the single most reason why i dont ladder much anymore.
I really think that i am more at home in gold league when i play casually. of course you end up being promoted anyway but this forces you to continually play at the top of your game.
I just dont want to always go balls to the wall serious play, and its just not the same as a custom game. since you can get matched against bronze or masters.
usually id get to plat then lose a bunch of games to drop back down to gold, but ever since i heard that blizzard can actually ban your account for throwing games intentionally i am now stuck in platinum not playing much ladder anymore.
such a shame. anyway that's my story, nothing really to do with fear i guess.
