Suck it up or don't play, pansy. Removing losses from profiles was already a step in the wrong direction.

except that i know i'm terrible, and the last guy i played against disconnected halfway so i got a free win. i'm now terrified of playing again because i know i'm going to be demoted as soon as i click 'find match' i wish there were a support group to help me overcome my massive ladder fear

This would let people off-race more freely and try out new things without effecting there ranking.

Let's consider custom games : + Show Spoiler + - You are not tied by the ranking system. Ranks doesn't define you anymore. You don't play for what you are worth and you won't try to prove anything. No pressure, you'll play exclusively for fun, freely. - You can expect that customs are full of either very high and very poor skilled players. Knowing this, It won't matter If you play IdrA or xxxS3phir0tHxxx who just bought the game because you will figure out the outcome 9 out of 10 ( however some of us would cream their pants ! xxxS3phir0tHxxx is awesome ), which means once again no pressure nor rewards or malus. - You do not need to win in order to win : you are free to reach a self made objective ( make x drones, work my micro with marines, etc ) without being punished by loosing the game. Let's now consider the ladder : + Show Spoiler + - Each account you make is tied by a rank. Your rank can change depending on your skill but is indefinitely tied to your name. You want to fool around ? you can't unless you pay another game. - Along with our rank we are also our skill is defined by our league, where everyone have a chance to win everyone. - You can check stats of players and everyone can watch your progress or your demise. Your build orders and timings can be consulted. Your replays are automatically saved. - To keep your skill at their best you must play regularly and warm up in customs before laddering. - The first thing your profile shows isn't your city or your favorite food, it's your level and if you're a worthy player. That's a lot of emphasis on results don't you think ? So, what do we think when we hit the Search button ? + Show Spoiler + "I can't fool around. Where are my build orders notes ?!" "I'm gonna face someone as good or bad as me. We both have the same chances to win. If I loose it's not because he was GM, it's because I sucked." "I should play more but it would suck if I was demoted" "I can't predict the outcome and should expect any kind of shit." "I don't wanna suck today... I'll just train in customs and when I'll beat Masters I'll go back to ladder." "11 loose streak, I don't wanna check my rank now" You hit the search button to win, to get points or to be promoted. You want to improve and it should be represented with pride by the rank and the league in your profile. Conclusion TL:DR : + Show Spoiler + You need time and patience to improve at SC2. Laddering and improving against same level opponents requires constant playing, concentration, stress management and an objective view about your play for a long time. People flee this stressfull result dependant environment to a more "sandbox / free to try" environment wich are custom game. This ranking system generates stress for players and whatever level you are, once you're into it you'll have to play regurlarly or you will have remorse for losing your skill. This is why the widely advised solution to ladder fear is a ladder without ranking. So guys, did you played enough today ?

Then people will start fearing those matches and we will need a 2nd level unranked matches... ad infinitum. No need to indulge those with irrational fears.

Talked to some of my friends who are afraid to ladder and there rational was: well i havent practiced in a while, so im gonna lose, and if i lose my rank will go down.. But if it does thats ok cause its suppose to represent ur current skill level.

At the end of S1 and start of S2 there were 1.7 million players. Now there are 1.2. I certainly would love to see something done to make it easier for new players and people with no/limited RTS experience to get in to the game.

I personally didn't care about losses being displayed on my profile. Ladder fear isn't about losses being displayed unless you play Master or GM, I'd think. (I don't) It's literally just fear of the search button, because you're being thrown into a competitive scene where it all relies on you. I really like SC2, but having to worry about all the stuff that could happen in a 1v1 game is keeping me from playing more than 2-4 matches a week. It's not pure fun to play SC2, it's more "Oh god oh god oh god oh god." Not what you want to do when you come home and want to relax with a game. If I die in 20 seconds in a shooter then what? I'm right back into -the same game- very shortly.

It's the fear of everything relying on you, every decision being made by you under pressure. Pretty intense when most people are used to COD and just coming back into the game after 10-15 seconds.

It's pretty simple to get past honestly. I had it pretty bad when I first started playing but if you go into a day of playing and say to yourself 'I will play 5 games today' and don't pussy out, you'll be fine. I also put up some inspirational post its with drawings of Day9 in the Uncle Sam 'We want YOU' pose, and those helped immensely.

Loss = Someone has found a weakness in your style I mean people like White-Ra has lost like 1000 games to get where he is now. Its losses that creates these good players, not wins. Its not about wins, its about how you can loose and still keep on fighting.

Those players ARE, how ever, the ones that pay for the majority of the events involving sc2. If there are no viewers there are no sponsors, no big events, no competetive gaming and in the end, no game.

Ok, all nonsense aside. This is an important thing that Goody did mention in an interview and couple of other players I have interviewed. They mentioned that a lot of new players tend to be scared so they dont ladder and slowly fall behind.

The ladder should not be faulted, can not be faulted, nor improved, for those with what amounts to simple anxiety issues. I am not attempting to fault the ladder for anything. I explained what goes on in my head, and likely in the heads of many others when thinking about SC2 laddering. Regardless, yes, you are playing the same game if you search for another ladder match, but that is not the point of the sentence you refer to. The point is that SC2 laddering is essentially you being put up against an unending series of strangers. In some ways you are being measured against one person after another. Some people don't like that kind of feeling, even if they have a 50/50 record. You will never have a chance to avenge yourself on the ladder, chances are you'll never ever play the opponent again, unless you play in a much smaller environment, like.. Top of Grandmasters. (An assumption, as I'm definitely not top of GM) Is that the fault of the ladder? Yes. Should the ladder be changed in some way because of this? Can it be changed in any reasonable way to accomodate players that feel like this? Probably not. I don't think so, at least.
