Fear is part of competitive play. It's part of the fun, it's part of the satisfaction afterwards. You could also call it tension. Just like most (professional) actors who experience tension before they go on stage. It gets them concentrated, it makes them sharp. Your heart goes faster, you feel a little funny... and then you go: Adrenaline. You should always have a little bit of fear. I think you perform better with it. After a couple of hundred ladder games the tension goes away and you get sloppy'er. The excitement is replaced with routine/grinding. Then only new challenges creates tension. Like tournaments where money is involved. So people who still experience fear during ladder should be happy imo. It's fun!
No fear = No tension = No Adrenaline = LESS FUN.

fear is something you have to deal with. just like presure and nervousness. you find it in real life to. just learn to live with it and accept it. not only a good tip for in game but also for in life
|
its designed to give players 50/50 win loss so theres really nothing to be scared of once you understand the games system is trying to make you lose half your games

I guess it also kinda comes down to the following;
peoples stats are trackable and u can just check matchhistory to see ones achievements etc etc. So people who don't dare are perhaps not the ultra-mega-gosu-players they claim to be to all their friends cause they could just check up where the bragger stands in the sc2 competition.
I could have been diamond if I laddered. I could have been masters if I just laddered! -uhuh
You can see these people in teamgames acting like the wargeneral on the battlefield (NOW PUSH!! FFS COME TO THE CENTER!! OMG FLANK!!!!), calling the teammates noobs and claiming to be mega gosus IF THEY JUST LADDERED. Custom games arent trackable so they can claim and make up stories all they want. Mostly they dodge a 1v1 vs an ally they just called noobs and call it a "waste of time".
These are the kind of people who are afraid to ladder. Braggers and people claiming to be diamond at least if they just laddered. The way to solve this is simply to stop hanging on big stories to all your friends about how good you are and start playing the game how it is meant to; fun, and getting better on the fly whilst playing. Stop calling other people noobs, stop promoting youirself as a progamer and ladder will be a whole lot more forgiving and less tense than people make it by themselves. The only reason why people would care about your 50/50 stats, league or ladderpoints is when a player brags about his actual skills. If people just l2 stop doing that they could ladder to l2p

If you lose, you get paired down until you start winning again. If you're worried about demotion, then you didn't deserve to be in that league in the first place, since you couldn't maintain a 50% win rate. I feel like the majority of people that are afraid of the ladder are too afraid to lose their league placement. This is a competitive game; you're not entitled to anything that you can't win.
Preserving an achieved league is like a one-shot wonder..

Whole purpose of ladder is rankings, winning and losing pts,if you wanna play on same skill lvl while not losing pts go spam channels for practice partners,or go to practice partner thread and find players who are on your skill lvl.
Theres nothing to fear of,even if you are 25 wins and 500 loses you probably learned a lot from those 500 loses and are better player then some 25:10 dude who was afraid of ruining his stats.
|
Yes, it could.
I often get the feeling I can't play the game when I feel I'm not in top condition. Like, when I'm getting very tired I just want to stop laddering and play 1v1 customs/do something else. Even when I'm sick at home and have nothing to do at all I won't ladder cause I feel like I'm playing a lot slower.
|
I've felt this fear before. I find to counter it you just play a ladder game/talk to people about the game (CHAT CHANNELS IMBA). I've found that the ladder matches me up with people of the same skill level (macro wise) so I'm not to worried about losing, because its usually my fault
|
I'm actually not sure the ranking is what causes the ladder fear. Logically you'd think thats what people would be afraid of, but I dont think it is.
Like most fear theres no concrete reason behind it. Best way to get over ladder fear is to just say "screw this" and click the 'find match' button. If you lose, anger will most likely replace the fear anyway and then you'll be frustratedly hitting the 'find match' button again and again until you win.
|
Confronting/overcoming fear is actually one of the best feelings you can get. When fears are irrational, you should make a habbit of confronting them. You will become addicted to challenging your fears.
|
I can see how maybe you have friends that play SC2, and they are higher leagues than you are and thus you might feel ashamed by your inferior league, rank, etc.
However, you just have to realize that it's just a fun game and most people are in in to have a good time and so you should too.
The thing I fear about the ladder the most is facing 1 base all-in builds 7 out of 10 games. But maybe that's just rage and not fear. -_-
|
i dont have ladder fear but get annoyed at the ladder system a lot, i get set up against a lot of higher players from who i rarely win. it gives me the feeling that if i dont feel at my very best ill lose.
you might say that i get set up against these higher players because i am close to promoting, but i think it is because there is no better opponent at the times i play.
so in a way i get nervous when i click start, because in the back of my mind it feels a bit unfair.

I posted here way back when, but I will also add depending no the fear--its part of the competition like some people say. You could be the best sc2 player in the world but if you cant do it in front of people, youll never be great. In the same way maybe you are fine against AI but fear that your opponent will mock you if you lose. you have to get over the nerves. Half of competition is not choking.
|
Why doesn't Blizzard give an option to use your MMR to do quickmatches agaisnt opponents unranked? Like when on the multiplayer screen, in addition to the 1v1 2v2 3v3 4v4 and race tabs, add a switch between ranked/unranked, and it would automatically match ranked/unranked seperated. Also unranked shouldnt go to your stats at all.
I like this idea..

It's interesting how people in some countries are afraid of abuse, starvation, war and other things, while many people here are scared of playing a video game.
|
I'm tired of people talking about ladder fear, honestly one has to just eventually overcome the simple fact that they are playing a competitive game, and they are going to lose and win.
And there are plenty of way's to go around it, i.e playing customs with friends, playing on the PTR ladder, getting a different account on a different server, etc.
I don't think ladder fear hinders starcraft 2, I just think that the players who can't overcome ladder fear, weren't meant to be playing a game like starcraft 2 competitively.
|
The baby'fying of the ladder doesn't accomplish anything.
They've done everything they can to make it a warm, fuzzy non-scary experience to casuals to the deteriment of the players who would like it to be more serious.
Casuals just don't wanna play an ultra competitive 1 on 1 game period, even if it were unrated. They like team games and customs.
Ruining the ladder trying to get non-competitive casuals to play does no good for anyone.
|
Here's the thing...
Ladder points don't matter. Who cares if your rating goes down? It's not about your e-peen, it's about constant improvement and practice. I personally love losing streaks because it is much easier to see your mistakes in a replay if you lose, beyond the usual inject timings etc. It is very useful to be matched to people at your skill level as that is where the best practice happens, and as you improve, you will naturally climb the ladder.
|
I dont think its as much ladder fear as sc2 just being a difficult game. Seriously if ur afraid to lose when ur losses arent even tracked ur pretty much a pussy who should go play wii. However sc2 is a game that requires 100% of ur time and focus. Other games u can hop on and mess around while watching tv, surfing the web, doing other crap. Laddering in sc2 needs to be done in optimal conditions with no distractions otherwise you'll likely get owned. So its difficult in that sense to play lots of games in a day unless your dedicated to improving, which not many people are.
|
If your ladder fear is so great that you literally don't play the game at all because you ALSO have noone to custom with but STILL won't ladder...
That's pretty pathetic. Your score will suck anyway as you get left behind in points.
