Some of my friends quit playing SC2, just because they're afraid to ladder. They're not into taking a game seriously, or studying it, tbh they already do that in their finance jobs, innovative tech jobs, med/law businesses, and grad school, and despite some pretentious nerds who find it unfathomable that people don't care to get better at sc2, there's more important areas in life to focus that energy on. I think for them, if there was a "social area" to play, then they'd probably be more willing to play. I personally think they should remove rankings from 2v2 to 4v4. Use the hidden mmr (and 1v1 rankings) to set up 2v2 to 4v4 games. Only have a transparent ladder for 1v1. Another solution might be set up the ability to play in a social multiplayer area without ladder (still have hidden mmr), but use all sorts of crazy maps from Steppes of War to the lava timer map, belshiar beach (sp), and another other new map on the scene. This would probably attract a segment of players who don't care at all for the seriousness of ladder play, but don't want to play custom games either. The goal should be to widen the SC community base, not to restrict it.

Set up different chat rooms (200 to 500 players max) that people can join and lounge around and chat with each other. These rooms can be broken up by leagues: unranked/social, bronze, silver, gold, etc. Also let people create a game, and allow people to pick and choose which ones to join. Now these wouldn't be ranked the same, but it makes Battle.net more of a social network, than a cold competitive atmosphere it is now. Basically everytime you log on, you should be entered into a chat room. Of course, you can leave, or even join your own personal chat room with your friends/clan/etc. But it's tough to log onto Battle.net and feel like you're part of the SC2 community the way it is structured now. You need to find outside sources like TL.

Not sure why though, but maybe because there's something at stake (their ranking), and having to deal with the fact they're not good doesn't make SC2 very fun for alot of people. The goal should be to widen the SC community base, not to restrict it. Are you sure those friends are afraid to ladder or they just don't enjoy it? I have friends who played sc2 for a while and then went back to playing console games because that's what they liked to do. The thing is though, the only way to overcome a irrational fear is to "get over it". You can't rationalize with irrationality. It's not like gold league players stalk around silver/bronze league ranking laughing at each name saying "LOL what a NUB!" The only way to overcome the fear is to realize that nobody else gives a shit what your ranking is and "get over it". There isn't anything else to say.

Ladder fear doesnt hurt SC2, it's a esential part of it. People just have to muster up some balls and do it, there is no other way past the obstacle.

You don't want to put this onus on potential SC2 community members. I think people who invest more time playing SC2 are more likely to become e-sports fans and convince others to watch, so why don't we want to reduce the hurdles to them playing? Just my opinion from a few of my friends, age 25-30. If you're in college, I can understand having all the free time in the world. But once you're a little older, SC2 is nothing more than recreation, don't make it challenging and expect people to get into it. The ladder makes it more exclusive imo. Check your league, how many guys are inactive? If you want a the social aspect out of a 1v1 game you really need to just play with friends. Playing a unranked ladder wont change that at all. I have no clue what you're actually arguing here tbh.. Your friends are obviously people who are not interested in the competetive side of SC2, then why bother with it? There are custom games, and there are chatrooms where you can get games going. Chatrooms that allows you initiate in social buildups. Sure there are things that can make the social aspect of B.net2 better, I think no one disagrees there, but that actually has nothing to do with the actual ladder and peoples ladder fear.

Well, after months of not playing, a 0-7 streak is almost to be expected :/ Still, I also feel the volatile nature of the ladder ranking is, if not directly harmful, then at least not beneficial to the overall spirit of laddering. I would much rather be sperated just into [low in league], [mid in league] and [high in league]. Because a single game can make the difference of two or three steps on the ladder makes at least some people very upset about losing.

edit: here's a tip. you are a bronze player regardless of where you stand. every game you lose is expected and every game you win is you getting better.

All I can really say is just play whatever you feel most comfortable playing. If you're afraid of 1v1 or even ladder, then play some other types of custom games. In case you didn't notice, SC2 is packed with a shitload of content. Also, another thing that I would like to add. Don't be afraid to lose on the ladder. It's a win-loss game when you're matched up with equally skilled opponents. But if you feel like you want to crush some newbs or something, then join a beginner chat channel or something and ask for matches. I really don't think that one should be allowed to turn the ladder rankings on and off. But, that's just me.

However, even for those who are serious about playing and improving it's problematic that all ladder games are ranked, because when you're learning, you need the freedom to screw around and try out new stuff which feels bad on ladder because you know you're hurting yourself. I don't know, maybe unranked ladder games would turn into some unpredictable, chaotic cheese-fest, but it might be worth giving a shot.

. Would like to have matchmaking for customs. Also Blizz should add at least one smurf account for free. This would definitively help. When laddering i shy away from fooling around, playing new builds so i end up doing what works for me over and over, however i enjoy doing diverse play, even if I won't be able to reach up my potential mmr then. Blizz needs to improve customs (matchmaking, match-up + rank choice) or add a free smurf.

Ah yeah, this feeling, that's what I was scared of. Guess I'm due a winstreak soon... i know the feeling.. i was quite active in season 1 and was in platinum league. then i stoped playing completly for some months and recently started again. i lost my placement match and still got placed in plat again, where im totally wrong -.- i play only vs high gold players all the time and lose like 70-80% of my games. still i dont get demoted. not a very enjoyable experience, but what should i do? i wont buy a new account, so i have to keep playing (or should i say losing?) ![]()
