Being actually scared to play on the ladder is just stupid, you will play against people relatively equal to you in skill, it is irrelevant if you win or lose and now they don't even show your losses anyway so who cares?

Find myself mostly playing team games with friends rather than 1vs1. It's fun, stress free, can play offrace and use completely messed up strategies and still be victorious. You should be able to get over the "ladder fear" by actually playing ladder, it may sound stupid but I'd imagine that works for most people.

I completely agree with this one.. In the first month, I had some fear to lose the points I had. But you should get over it and just push that "Find match". And you'll see you will get better . I don't agree that Ladder fear hurts Starcraft II. I think it's just a 'process' you have to go through.

No can deny that it is hurting SC2, it's just too obvious. It has nothing to do with "hurr they're scared" or "durr just play customs". When someone is scared they aren't playing SC2 as much or stop all together, thus "hurting" it.

Having a competitive ladder is a good thing for the game. Even if people are afraid of the competitiveness of a competitive ladder, having the ladder is still a good thing. Giving an option to turn off ladder ranking isn't a good solution; If too many people turn off their ladder ranking, then it would undermine the ladder as a tool to see where one stands in relation to everyone else.

I honestly don't understand why some people insist on having a "practice ladder" so they can preserve their ratings and rankings. If you don't want to hurt it, go play customs. If you want to match with someone your own skill level, then get a practice partner. No practice partners? Go play team games and work on your mechanics. I seriously do not believe anyone that has laddering fears is in Master league. If that is the case, these players can always work to improve their mechanics. And this can always be done in team games. I used to be so afraid of laddering 1's because I might be demoted to something lower than Gold league. However, after I got Diamond league in 2's, 3's, and 4's, I just stopped caring about what-if's and laddered 1's. I took a few losses, but for the most part won a large amount of my games. I'm talking 7-3 records in about two hours of laddering. Just ladder like it was any other game. No one makes progress from pussyfooting around.

Either way, ladder fear is a problem, and thanks for putting it out there. For everyone else, you have to understand not every gamer is looking to learn, or make progress, or be successful in the same way.
