All production on one hotkey-- counter-productive?

I'm writing this to find out what the general consensus is on binding all facilities (Barracks, Factory, Starport) to one hotkey.

This is the system I started using when I first got the game, but I am looking for reasons one might consider changing. What are the downsides (if any) to putting everything on one control group?

one i can think of offhand is that my starport is always rallied somewhere else because im using it for other things besides bulking up my army

there is also a delay when you have to press tab to switch, it may be small but in the heat of things its way easier to mess that up than to just press a separate button

From what I see pros do, they like to keep each respective production building on its respective hotkey but I've seen many master players hotkey them all and memorizing how many tabs they need to get to the building they desire to create units from.

This is the reason i can't play terran properly .

I main Zerg, so ofc putting all hatch on 1 key is fine, and because protoss doesnt need to produce very often all on 1 key is easy again, but as terran no way

I keep rax/factory on one hotkey, and starport on another. That way air units don't accidentally rally over bad places.

With protoss it doesn't really matter, because it's pretty much just warpgates on w and robo on another.

More manual control or if you want separate rallies quickly if anything. Obviously, you give up more control groups that could have been used for units or going over to the more uncomfortable hotkey side (7 to 0).

Now I'm not saying one way is better than the other, but I would advise to use what feels more comfortable to you (physically).

All of my terran production buildings are on 1 hotkey, it's what I'm most comfortable with. Allows me to start producing units ASAP.

I'd imagine it be much more inefficient speed-wise to deal with having Barracks, Factories, and Starports with Reactors and Tech Labs. It's pretty annoying to deal with having Planetary Fortresses in a different tab group as Orbitals/Commands as it is, and I can't fathom how hitting tab 5 times to build a Viking could be more efficient.

If it works for you, then it works for you, of course. This is strictly on a "key-press counting" basis.

Down side might be lets say you want 5 drones, and and 8 roaches. If you have your rally set to your 3rd for drones, and you make the drones at your main, you lose time in transit, where you could have just made them at the nat. Thats the only thing for zerg really. Or if you have a hidden expo that could cause issues.

For some reason, I use the following setup:

1-Army
2-Mech Army, if I don't make mech units, I use this hotkey for air units.
3-Barracks (All)
4-Command Centers (All)
5-Factory (All)
6-Starport (All)
7-drops


8-0 Upgrade facilities. I rarely use 7-0 though, too uncomfortable.

tbh it is more efficient using different hotkeys, if u wanna build air u always hit the air button. Not the production button and scroll.

this also trains your hand in making more accurate moves on the keybord. When you get a hold of it u will play better.

I play toss however the concept is the same. I feel that the only detrament to having everything on 1 hotkey is that you should have your army on more then 1 so might as well with production, but i also changed the binded keys 7-0 to f1 f2 f3 and f4 I keep my robo on f1 stargates on f2 forges on f3 and random stuff on f4. what this allowed was for more efficent macro and no need to put everything on 5 (wat i used to do) because i simply changed the mechanics of the key to click. But also if u want to rally buildings to diff. places its prolly better.

That's what I use at the moment and it's working really great. I've noticed a clear improvement in my macro since I started this. Hitting 5 is enough to make sure all my production buildings are pumping out stuff, while still allowing to quickly build a bunch of vikings for example by hitting 7 in emergency.
Comon rally point using 5 is also very useful to me and I can always finetune by using 6 and 7 if necessary (banshee builds or putting tanks on high ground).
