Hell, it's about time!

Great news though and good to see more and more tournaments realising it's the only real solution to the sound issues.

I'm glad to see MLG continuing to improve and invest in the sc2 experience for their tournaments. I'm hoping the internet infrastructure at Columbus handles everything better than Dallas, too.

For all the problems that MLG has had, you have to admit that they've at least attempted to respond swiftly to each one.

Sure it will. More curtains then, or proper ones? Anyway It's great they listen to the player and actually fix problems.

Just to wait and see if stream works properly now!

Interesting indeed. If MLG can address the major items of criticism from Dallas and execute it well, I will be very impressed.

yeah there were a lot of mistakes to be learned from in dallas, and this was one of them. good to see that MLG is really trying to improve upon them. now all they have to do is figure out how to stream to more than 10 people without crashing, and they should be good to go.

I don't know if any of you follow @MLG_Sundance on twitter, but here were some of the messages he sent out yesterday:

  • Would folks be willing to help out with a pre-Cbus steaming test as we look to improve our delivery. Load a stream and give some feedback..

  • Will be sure to push the testing live when we get it rolling. Will ask folks to fill out forms rating quality

  • Will post stream testing details here and on @TeamLiquidnet once we get it set up. Should start in a week or so. lots to do before Cbus.

As soon as I see how you can be part of the testing crew, before Columbus to ensure that everything is where it needs to be, I will make sure everybody here is aware.

We are doing everything in our power to make sure Columbus and future events go as flawlessly as they can in respect to the LIVE Stream as well as the tournament it self.

There is this information posted in http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=211390 thread as well. Looks like MLG is doing the extra effort and hoping to fix the issues. Kudos to them!

I will lol if they have the ones with curtains in the back just so I can hear Geoff talk about it on SOTG... but they said they are soundproof so that likely won't be the case.

They are promising increased stream quality as well as well as backup lines for the stream.

They're also going to have to bring an entire other truck for the booths:
hah. yes, it will take another truck.

Very impressed with MLG.

good to see they are working on the issues, the games on sunday that were streamed were definately awesome and a good showing of how great a tournament it can be

small note on asking the community to stress test their systems; it was said over and over that there was no possible way for them to test infrastructure in dallas before hand....

Very good that solves one of the major issues with the last one.

Now if they can manage to stream without lags and crashes that will solve a couple more :/

Yeah. Players hearing commentators should not possible and it must really sucked to the spectators in Dallas to hear the commentators everytime EXCEPT during the actual matches...

You know what? Thats fine, its not like soundproof booths are a new revolutionary idea. And thats good that they are, DreamHack is stepping up their game, forcing all it's competitors/fellow tournaments to step up theres, so mega props to MLG.

MLG should put some pressure on blizzard to give them LAN support. If blizzard had done their job correctly this would probably be one of the last issues for mlg to handle ;O

Great that they plan to fix this I hope it catches on

I would venture to say 4 at least. They're only needed for mainstage games that will be on the big screen and broadcast through the speakers since that's where soundproofing matters the most I would imagine.

Does that mean the end of the Halo jokes?
You should not have to pay to watch the GSL, Proleague, or OSL at a reasonable time. That is not "fine" and it's BS to say otherwise. My sig since 2011. http://www.youtube.com/user/dabom88

Judging by dreamhack, the solution of this is to just have the audience exploding with loudness at all times, instead of just 6 pool.

Learning from your own mistake is great, MLG. I give props for that.

However, it would've been even better if they looked at what Korea (GSL or MSL/OSL) was doing and learned from that. Then maybe Dallas would not have happened. Just saying

To ensure the player doesn't hear a darn thing, you need:
1. Soundproof booth
2. Industrial-grade noise blockers
3. Ear buds.
4. Have the speakers face away from the stage.

Then commentators can scream as loud as they want without worry.

Better late than never, but honestly why did they have to fuck up MLG Dallas after they already learned this lesson last season? As well as pretty much every other live SC tournament? I want my money back.

Good! Now the commentators will be able to talk about what is going on in the game while it is down! :D

Definitely a good idea, I would have been so angry if I was in the audience in Dallas and didn't get to hear the commentary. Hopefully the next MLG goes smoothly.

I would venture to say 4 at least. They're only needed for mainstage games that will be on the big screen and broadcast through the speakers since that's where soundproofing matters the most I would imagine.

4 at least? They only need 2.

Technically true, but 4 booths allows them to setup one game while another is being finished avoiding downtime. Of course knowing MLG, downtime is their specialty.

Did you miss the info on the work they are doing to improve the stream? they appear to be trying to improve it for all viewers, onsite or streaming. People moan about the tech and setup issues and then moan some more when they start bringing in solutions!!?

Sundance made this a directive. To quote him: "We're doing booths. Figure out how to make it happen. And make sure they're actually sound proof."

We're working on it. Should have more word soon.

Buy them from wherever the other tourneys are getting them, and then pack sound proofing over all the gaps. And blast music in there. And put the Halo tournament farther away.

I've built a soundproof studio in my basement. It doesn't have any finish, but it gets the job done. Anyway, it should cost under a grand to build a proper studio/booth. It's not hard to find plans and tweak them to meet your needs.

I wish it were that easy. it's not nearly that easy in our world...

Keep in mind that the booth has to travel across the country 5-6 times a year. It needs AC to keep the players cool and have a window which we can get a shot of the player into. Not saying it's hard or unusual, but the reality is, most of the sound proof booths people are using aren't actually sound proof. The new GSL booths are. And the MLG booths will be as well.

The unit you built in your basement would probably fall apart on the road. We need something that we can load onto a truck, assemble quickly and then break down again for storage. All while maintaining the integrity.

There's several vendors that we're working with on this. it'll be done right. Sundance has decreed it so... :D

That's what we want to see. I am sure this is because Dreamhack had it, so MLG doesn't want to be worse.
This is what needs to happen in SC2 scene... one tournament taking a small leap, then the rest following along, and before we know it, it will be standard.

you don't need fully sound proof booths just use it in combination with

1. noise isolation ear buds
2. heavy duty ear muffs
3. facing the speakers away from these booths
4. playing music in the booths
5. keeping a booth babe in the booths (seemed to work for the msl)

I dont think you need ac maybe just ventilation since mlg venues seem to be freezing and sc players need to keep their hands warm

edit- also you guys need to fill up the dead air between games leaving people alone like that kinda makes them lose interest fast. Dream hack used a lot of user created content and the NASL got the when cheese fails guys to create content for them.

I just hope they buy more than two. Having four would be ideal so that the next two players could set up while the game being broadcast is ongoing.

The delay between casted games for setup was horrendous.

Sundance made this a directive. To quote him: "We're doing booths. Figure out how to make it happen. And make sure they're actually sound proof."

We're working on it. Should have more word soon.

Please give us some really good info and specs once it's all figured out. I'm really skeptical of booths because they're just sound buffers most of the time and can actually be worse because they can isolate players from masking noise without effectively reducing overall levels enough to matter. I'm glad you say they will actually be soundproof (which is a really big claim). I would love details on how they are to be made, what sound proofing features they will use, what materials, etc. It's just the nerd in me that wants to know, it's not a challenge or anything.
If all you're offering is Dos Equis, I will stay thirsty thank you very much.

From the ashes of MLG Dallas, a phoenix will rise at MLG Columbus that shall take the e-sports world by storm, thus showing the mainstream public the awesomeness that is Starcraft.

I'm really hyped to see what these soundproof booths will be like. Not only will it help the playing experience, but it should also be quite important from the live audience perspective now that they can turn up the caster's volume and have the audience actually hear Day9 and friends. Soundproof booths should really make MLG a much more legit tournament.

To be honest, Dreamhack did just fine with two booths. Immediately after a game the winner would go out for an interview while staffers removed/set up the gear for the next player. I bet they would even check to see that things were working. There was literally no downtime.

I'm guessing it would only be for select few group matches, no way the open bracket could all be done in booths.

Seems the booths are not soundproof at all (they don't have a floor). But I guess with good headset it will do the trick. It seems even MG isn't sure it will be soundproof, hope the crowd will be able to hear casters this time. (heard this in yesterday's live on 3)

About the gazillions matches, booths are only required when the casters are casting this particular match (so the caster can cast to live audience too). As only one game is broadcasted at a time, only 2 booths (or 4 for dual streams) are needed.

Well the only matches that need booths are those that are being live casted, right? And there won't be more than one or two games casted simultaneously anyways since there are only two streams.

I just hope they buy more than two. Having four would be ideal so that the next two players could set up while the game being broadcast is ongoing.

The delay between casted games for setup was horrendous.

To be honest, Dreamhack did just fine with two booths. Immediately after a game the winner would go out for an interview while staffers removed/set up the gear for the next player. I bet they would even check to see that things were working. There was literally no downtime.

Most of the downtime was filled by user created content like the husky scv love song or the baneling song.

Still, the downtime was always rather short, especially if you take into account the cool interviews and funny 2GD jokes that won't really downtime. I think every tournament that aims to put on a serious show should try to emulate what dreamhack did

Booths look cool, though far from soundproof. Hopefully it blocks enough with headphones/music so crowd can hear casters this time :
