I was in class debating the purchase of my ticket today when I thought I'd poll the TL community. After the choppy stream of the finals last season, I am hesitant. I cannot deny the value of the 15$ as it offers hours of content, but it almost becomes the principle of the matter wherein I do not wish to support a company that does not follow through with their advertising. I just mean they offer HQ stream, but often it does not work on my otherwise fine internet connection.
Hence, the poll!

Just wondering who has lost interest/faith in Gom and who is starting to invest in it.
Yes, this is my third ticket. To be honest, I started to lose interest in the second season, I watched every match, most of them live season 1, and season 2 I only watched the foreigners live.. it just got kind of boring, and there wasn't that fruit dealer story in the top 8 The Nada and Boxer matches were cool, and Idra going to ro16 was awesome, but as soon as Idra dropped out I started to just kind of mildly care, especially since most of the good players I grew to like in season 1 weren't making reappearances in the top 8 other than HopeTorture, who extremely dissapointed me against FruitDealer so I was rooting against him.. Hopefully the foreigners do extremely well this time around as I am pulling for all of them!
I would also like to mention the amount of tvz in this season is really going to make sick of it, the matchup has been played WAY too many times in the gsl so far, It's gonna be kind of dull match up wise, just because there are so few toss, and so many zergs, so I doubt we get much variety
not sure how you can lose faith in gom, it's all up to the players to give us a good show, not gom .. foreigners fighting!
Third ticket. I can't watch all the games live so the VOD service is very handy. Honestly, foreigner or not I'd buy it anyways, because I love GSL so all in all it's all good.
I would love to watch all the games but I just don't have time for it to fit my schedule. 90% of any "starcraft" related stuff I do, I do while at work.
GSL is the highest skilled, best produced and most exciting tournament in the world, so definitely. I sometimes pay more for dinner, so it's silly not to. Foreigners in GSL3 will make it even more interesting. HD VODs ^_^
Second ticket for me. While there have been occasional issues with the HQ stream, I have found it to be an awesome experience. The production is great and the games are getting better and better and its basically unbeatable in terms of entertainment and value.
The HQ stream is to choppy for me as im from the UK but the $15 is still worth it to me for the VODs which i can watch in HQ. I do my best to watch as much live as possible but with so many games played in the opening rounds i would have to have no life at all to be able to do that. The VODs are uploaded superfast and are very reliable so anything i miss live i catch up in the next few days while remaining spoiler free.
Having such a backlog of HQ VODs is easily worth more than $15 regardless of the stream. The normal stream is good quality anyway. At least as good as the MLG HQ stream which has to be paid for.
Yep, I just paid for it a few minutes ago. I also purchased the seasons one and two tickets and greatly enjoyed them, even if they take a large chunk out of my gaming time. I should also add that I only ever watch the VoDs since I'm too weak to stay up and watch them live, however, since winter break is fast approaching I might get the chance to watch a few live games, should be fun.
IMO, eSports won't grow for foreigners if you have to pay $20 up front to engage in the scene, so why should I pay them if they don't seem to care about the foreign scene. I never would have known about pro-starcraft if not for free BW cotent.
Not gonna buy again because I still don't have the money to spare. The only reason it would be worth it to me is to watch games before they're spoiled. However, I'll be on break most of the next month and will be up to watch most of the games live at 4 AM! So, I get the best of both worlds: free e-sports and no spoilers.
If only they steamed it live in the afternoon T_T

That was pretty much the bread and butter of my arguments in the past. But really it just comes down to the fact that I legitimately do not have $20 to spare on something that's been available for free to me for the past 10 years.
I can't always stay up to watch all the games, so the VODs are awesome to have, but when i can stay up, the HQ stream has never been choppy for me so i grabbed a ticket for this season as well(I had one from season 2).
What is so hard about going to bed at 9-11pm and getting up at 3:50-5:50, getting some coffiee or soda, and watching it, then going to work or whatever?
i was hesitant to buy it during the first season, but i got so excited when FD was tearing shit up as a lone Zerg so I ended up buying one. Ever since Ive bought all the season tickets which now i think is worth every penny. 15 bucks is pretty good when you consider some shitty ass movie with $7 popcorn.
On November 19 2010 11:02 mOnion wrote: thread with op as only a poll is not cool
post with no discussion is not cool? but yeah i simply do not want to waste the money on a ticket and i believe it's free live and occasionally i'll be up that late so that's how i watch
I only ever watch VOD's because of the time zones and classes, so will probably buy again. Still haven't watched all the games from S2, so I guess it was my fault I didn't get my moneys worth out of that one, but course work is all done so gonna watch GSL like a mad man this time.
I bought the season 2 ticket to support the GSL (I watch it live anyway and haven't watched any VODs), but I found that the HQ stream was very unstable and the SQ stream was laggy. I'd love to buy the season 3 ticket but I just can't justify it if I have trouble even watching it.
I almost fell asleep watching the finals live. i paid for the VODs for season 1 and 2. to be honest season 2 games were more fun to watch than season 1. i get a feeling season 3 games will be better than season 2 as players are getting better at sc2. i honestly don't like how mlg and iem is set up. it is a short 3 day tournament and some times i don't get to watch my favorite players playing televised games. in gsl u get to watch all the players in top 64 play.
plus, i pay 15 bucks a month on netflix and i think i watch of gsl than movies from netflix.
Bought it last season and already bought mine for this.
Plenty of content, I had no issues with the streams ever except for the finals, going back and watching key games is great, and I over slept plenty of days so it was nice to be able to watch them when I did wake up as they were often already up on VODs.
I also feel like it is a good way to support something I enjoy and feel is worth supporting. It is like every now and then I'll buy a CD from an artist/group I really like knowing I could probably get it for cheap or free online but sometimes it is just worth spending to support.
I haven't bought it yet but I'm going to and I bought both of the previous seasons. There's just so much content and staying up to try to watch it live just isn't worth it, especially with some of the issues that the free stream has had.
I've bought a ticket for every season, and let me say this, the second season was exponentially better than the first, at least in my opinion, and the third will definitely be even better!
Second ticket. Never watch it live, in for the HD vods. Fucking love gom's web player... nothing else on the internet I've used plays HD stuff so well, can skip over all the Tastetosis filler talk with just a click, don't have to pre-buffer at all.
Last season I hardly watched the first round at all, only a few players I really cared about. Now I know who some many of them are and wanna see how they do.... so many game(ling)s!
that's 15 bucks a month.. Which is 225 a year... And I don't even get any replays, Just 2 casters casting it... nty. I'd much rather download free replays than watch a game being casted, most of which is just talk before the game.
I also think it should be free, only with a lot of advertisements, cause im not paying for that shit.
I have bought every season and will continue to do so as this is really the only big money tournament that is very available. Most of the other foreigner tournaments don't have live streams and VODs which sucks.
I watch every game live and bought a ticket every season... It is higher quality and I like to think I'm supporting something I enjoy so hopefully it will continue in the future and I can continue to enjoy it.

15$ a month is 50C a day, you can make that just "borrowing" money from friends ^^
"Hey mark, got a spare 50C?"
Next day, "John, can you lend me 50C man?"
50C is so insignificant that nobody remembers, if you are THAT cheap :p
Remember, you spend that much money a month on other stuff anyway, lights, flushing toilets, gas
Gotta focus weeks of school, going to have a friend in the army visit after school is over, holidays and didn't have time to watch all of the games in season 2. I want to watch it, willing to buy the ticket, but have more important things to do.
buying for third straight season. the quality and service has improved every time and I'm guessing it will be either on par or better than last seasons
I have bought a ticket ever season thus far and have enjoyed the VODs immensely. The timezones aren't too terrible here, but especially during the Ro64, I just don't have the time to spend sitting around watching 7 hours of Starcraft straight, so the VODs are great at letting me watch them at my own pace or skipping games I don't care to watch.
I do have problems with the live stream but it has generally been watchable and I've watched both finals live, though I did have to watch the LQ stream unfortunately to avoid buffering issues.
I think given the amount of content and that the money goes to support GOM and Tastosis makes the $15 worth it. Material has been free in the past, but it was mostly low quality (bit-rate wise) and required English commentators to dub the Korean streams.
I don't see $15 as a ridiculous amount of money, but given that video games here are $100AUD not $50 USD, and $15AUD = $15USD essentially, $15 to me is probably a lot less than $15 to people in the states. This being that to me $15 is 15% of a video game, whereas in the states it is 30% of a video game in comparative buying power.
This is my 3rd purchase. I watched the first season live but then decided turning into a night owl when I was still in school was a bad idea. I enjoy the pass because I can watch the games after classes are over. That more than makes it worth the cost in my opinion.
Dunno if I'll buy it when it goes up to $50 because thats actually a decent amount of money compared to $15. The stream and vods are listed as two as seperate items, so if it allows me to just buy the vod pass in the future I'll probably do that.
I dont watch a ton of games live so I'm not going to pay an extra $20 for a service I dont really use.
Not sure if Im doing it this GSL, but definitely ill start buying those tickets next Season. Great Stuff from GOMtv.net thats for sure, being a fan of GOM for a couple of years now.
I bought the first 2 seasons. Although I'm a live watcher and the HQ stream lags for me. So I'm probably going to pass this time. If they fix the HQ stream I'd buy it without fail though.
I wake up and record then watch it through out the day...sometimes I dont have enough HDD space and I miss entire matchups. After that I delete the files
Have long watched the free stream, but with so many foreigners in this one, I've finally purchased a ticket. Also means I dont have to worry about a full stream when I get home late from work (GSL starts at 11 PM here)
I bought 1 and 2, but I I'm probably not going to buy 3 since the HD scream was too lagged to watch for the entire last season and I don't really have that much use for the Vods since it's in my timezone anyway.
I buy the ticket for the vods. I can't watch them live unless it is for a special reason, such as the matches of THE EMPEROR. In that case, I'll adjust my schedule to fit it in.
However, I don't have a lot of spare time, so I actually go to the live report thread first and look at the recommendation section. I only watch the recommended games and the games played by the very few SC2 players that I care about.
One problem with GOM vod is that the HQ version load really slow, and I need to buffer it before being able to watch the match. I can view youtube 1080p without any lag in lightning speed.
I pay my 15 dollars because the price is reasonable and I'd like to think I am supporting e-sport in some sort of way, however minor or insignificant.
The vods have been perfect for me, if you have lag, I would have thought buffering the vods would let you watch in best quality even if it takes away the live aspect you can watch only hours after...
also, I can watch intersting games over and frankly, why wouldn't you want to put money into the one group of people brocasting the top production value sc2.
bought one for every season now. totally worth it imo i love the HQ VODs that they had for season 2 looking forward to some awesome games this season IDRA FIGHTING!!
zomg how can you be a TL fanboy and not want to buy tickets this season! we have ret, haypro, jinro, AND idra to support! omfg you have no idea how bad i want to have a round eye in the finals, so they have to have jon up on the main stage translating the interview of idras mom
Living in Australia, my internet struggles with the SQ stream. I wouldn't mind giving some money just to support GOM but being unemployed and heading into the holiday season I can't really afford it.
I may start purchasing the tickets if I'm still interested sometime next year.
I'm from EU - have bought S1+S2. I wont buy another - didnt have a lagfree HQ stream at all in S2 like a lot of other Europeans.
I will reconsider midseason if I hear from other people that GomTV fixed the connection issues. Then I'll probably buy one. But until then I'm stuck with the SQ stream anyway and dont really have a reason to pay.
I never watch the streams live as the time would be ridiculous for me to plausibly watch, so watching the replay vods has always worked just fine. So yes indeed, bought a ticket again!

Actually it'll be something like 3months/season once the GSL actually starts next year, so 60 bucks a year is totally worth it IMO. Most people spend easily more than that in a month on eating out, movies, etc.
On November 19 2010 12:25 teacash wrote: I will keep buying a ticket as long as tasteless and artosis keep casting
It's funny, I haven't bought for the reason that tasteless keeps casting - I find him annoying to watch/listen to. Though I don't have the spare funds to pay, I would only consider paying for the service for the high quality vods rather than to support the 'high level' talent that is casting the games (tasteless that is, artosis is cool). Once I have some spare cash, I might invest in S3.
Seeing as the HD stream failed to work properly during EVERY match that I was interested in watching live in season 2, no fucking way am I paying for a pass this time around. That was $20 thrown out the window since I ended up watching the live SQ stream and not a single VOD.
After this season, if feedback on the HD stream is positive, I'll consider it for the next one.
No, I can watch a good portion of the games for free. I really don't think buying a tick is supporting e-sports like everyone thinks. Supporting Blizzard and Gretech doesnt mean supporting e-sports to me. Looking forward to another good season.
No. I got the Season 1 and 2 tickets, but I'm not as interested in Season 3 (don't know why).
Another reason is the horrible horrible quality of the HQ stream here in Europe. I had to watch SQ test every time, so I got nearly nothing out of my season pass, except for VoDs when I overslept or had something important to do.
Just having access to the (actually very good) VoDs is not worth the money for me at the moment, so I used it for something more important.
Bought a ticket because the higher quality stream rocks. It's also a steal just to get all the vods for $15 so I don't see how anyone can pass this up.
I never had a problem getting on the HQ stream if I woke up on time. If I woke up 30 minutes late I'd have to refresh/spam the site until I got a working stream.
I'm going to get the S3 ticket just because I enjoy the HD vods enough. Before I got the season 1 ticket, I was forcing myself to stay up until 5-6am to watch it live and it wasn't really worth it to do that every day. Plus the HD vod quality is so much better than the HD stream that I actually enjoy watching the vods more than the stream (but I miss the live TL chat when I watch the vods )
I was planning to buy it for the GSL 2 since Nada and Boxer playing, but looking at the timing and schedule I couldn't see if I can watch them all, so I forfeited it.
GSL 3 and so on I don't think that I will buy any of that, although I might change my mind later, and might buy ticket for finals (depend on who's on the final). I don't think that I have enough time to watch it, and I have so many things to do other than watching .. .. ...
I've bought one for every season so far. The VOD quality has improved so much since the first season, and I don't even watch the live streams (2am is a little too late/early for me), so it's totally worth it for me personally.
http://www.gomtv.net/2010gslopens3/vod/1280 Watch this GSL 3 Preliminary. Syj vs JeonHoSeong . These 2 players are pretty good. Just like watching fruitdealer vs boxer game @_@. Now go and buy the GSL 3 ticket
I have bought Season 1 and 2 in the past, but this season with almost no Protoss playing I decided not to buy it. I'm going to focus more on playing my self rather then watching ZvT over and over. Ill jsut have to wake up really early to watch Ret play!
When you watch soccer, nfl or any other sport on tv they are free, highest resolution possible, professional comentators and so many more other advantages over paying 20 dollars for a gsl ticket that lasts 1 month. Gom tv could use western ads like what they do with ustream on the intervals instead of not showing anythink like what they do now a days. Paying 20 dollars for this is not much i know, but the main problem with it is that it feels unfair for me to pay that money to something that doesn't deserve it, the service is good and the players are fine, but compared to the fifa world cup for example it is far behind, in the other hand compared to a movie which costs 40 bucks id get way more entertainment out of gom. Maybe when gomtv becomes a bit more accessible and with a fairer cost i will definitely look towards it.
Maybe korean starcraft 2 scene should try to reach a wider market before trying to make big sums of money out of it.
dunno if i'll buy the s3 since the s2 finals got laggy even on vod in HQ... i had planned to buy the s3 but now that i saw the s2 in HQ i'm starting to wonder if they really have improved... Had to watch the entire season if low quality cauz i couldn't stand to have a 0,5s freeze every second or two in HQ. Meh dunno really, probably worth it for watching the entire series i guess.
helllls yeah bought all three seasons so far. Best money I've ever spent! Besides starcraft 2 of course ^^ If you haven't bought a season yet I definitely reccomend you do so. Worth every penny

I agree with you, I paid for HQ vods and should be able to watch them without buffering issues. I watched all my VODs on LQ, because even when I let it buffer for 30 minutes it was still at 50%.
The price ($14.99) is no problem at all, I think its more than fair, all I ask is that I get what I paid for. I bought GSL1 and 2 premium service, but so far I'm on the ropes for GSL 3. If I hear good things about their upload/bandwidth being majorly improved, I won't hesitate to buy another ticket.
I bought season 3, and I've bought each season so far. I did notice some lag problems on some HQ vods, but it was generally only during the very beginning and very end for me. The actual match content was totally fine 99% of the time. Plus the HQ vods look amazing, well worth the 15$ now.
Btw, I can't really comment on any of the livestream issues people may have been having. I can never catch the games live, but the vods are always posted very quickly and like I said before, they work pretty well for me.
though paypal + my bank is so friggin slow but it'll be up...but like a day late (but I guess I could just watch the live test version for the heck of it though...)
On November 19 2010 15:18 KaiserReinhard wrote: Nope, don't want to contribute to setting a precedent where it's ok to charge people money to watch SC2 tournaments.
Buying the ticket is not mandatory. You can watch the tournament live for free.
Honestly, I don't see why people refuse to buy the ticket solely on the reason that they don't wanna pay because they think they should get it free.
People pay to see sports live, people pay to see sports on TV (NFL Network, NBA TV, etc). It's a form of entertainment that can bring you hours of good stuff.
That is if the stream works, and sadly I can't say that I've had good experiences with their streams. Until they show me that it'll work and that I haven't wasted by 15-20 bucks, then I'll support them once again. But I just can't put down that money and have it not work for me at times like it did previous couple of seasons.
Was thinking about it, but I never really have the free time to stay up till 3-4am watching the games, so might as well just download them the next day when I get home from work/training.

If there is a Starcraft Network on television that broadcasts hot starcraft action 24 hours a day, by all means I'll shell out the dough for that. But there's a big difference between paying for sporting events and paying $15 to watch a single tournament on your computer. I really don't want this to become another big "paying for GSL" argument, but I just wanted to point out that the sporting event analogy is faulty.
They treat Europe badly (unwatchable streams + you have to preload HQ vods) but I'll buy ticket again. However I truly hope they'll improve their quality. It's really not much we ask for.
I'll buy a ticket every season if not just to support esports. I was very satisfied with the improvement in quality of the vods when season 2 came around. People voiced their opinions about the things that sucked in the production quality of season 1, and gom changed in it all in season 2. Hopefully season 3 will be even better.
I hate paying for stuff, especially things like this on the internet, but I just find it so enjoyable that I can't refuse $15 for the happiness it me brings every month : ). I believe this is the only thing I've ever paid for online that wasn't an actual product (Amazon, ebay, etc.).
I can't stay up late since I have morning classes, so the VODS are what are really important to me. But if you plan on using it only for the HQ live stream, then I'd be a little more hesitant to suggest buying it since it seems less valuable then.
On November 19 2010 16:23 TributeBoxer wrote: I know a site that posts every match vod in korean, but someone should PM me an account so I can watch in English.
Why would someone want to do that? Buy your own ticket if you want to watch it.
I have this crazy idea, but I wonder if it is legal.
Can you share a GomTV account with someone? I see the matches live at work (on a restream, damn firewall !) but I would be interested to pay 7.5€ for the VODS. This season I will pay the full 15€ probably, just to support E-sports and because I watched the previous 2 seasons for free.
Or share an account with somebody in the USA, he can watch live HD(+vods) and I can watch the VODs.
I know 15€ is not that much but for me it is almost a donation, because I don't really need the VODs.
I watch GSL just for Tasteless and Artosis. The great games are just a bonus. Signed up for all 3 Season tickets, no regrets. Had some slight issues with the BoxeR vs NaDa game, and the S2 finals - had to watch those in SQ 'cos the HQ was a little bit jittery. Aside from that, I'm 100% satisfied and have every intention of subscribing to each and every event they host.
I noticed when purchasing the Season 3 ticket, there's now a warning prompt mentioning that the live quality can't be guaranteed if you're not in their server region. I hope that clarity helps alot of the Europeans who have experienced issues in the previous seasons.
I know VOD means video on demand but does their vods contain all the material that livestream has? Like the casts, talks, introduces, interviews etc. I'm considering buying ticket if I cant find the matches elsewhere.
I like reading people's reasons for buying and not buying the ticket. But the worst reason for buying is because "it's a steal" - that's actually what not buying entails.
Furthermore I've watched probably thousands of top-level starcraft games completely for free. And, that wasn't considered stealing, even though it's exactly the same thing that the gsl offers. So I don't consider $15 for ~50 matches a good deal what so ever.
but in the middle of s2 there was this bug when suddenly i can't play the vods anymore.
The message was something like " unable to stream. something about my firewall blocking" although i had the same exact settings all along and just the previous day i could run it no problem.
Tried installing-reinstalling, relogging in, etc and still doesn't work. So i can't play the hq live stream anymore so won't be buying it.
The stream was good in quality though for me so i'd recommend anyone who doesn't get bugged by the technical problem to get it.
Bought it every season so far. I don't really follow the competetive scene in SC2 any more, all I watch is GSL VOD's whenever I feel like it. And I will gladly contribute 15$ every season towards tasteless' and artosis' paychecks.
I never watch live, only VOD's. If you start up a couple of vids on HQ and let it load for a while you have no stuttering, not really much of a hassle

I don't understand it either. I've easily gotten more than $20 of entertainment from watching Season 2.
If you buy the ticket with a different name than the one that's on your account, does it still upgrade the account you pressed "Buy a ticket" with, or does it sync with the name on the creditcard+account, if anyone tried this before <:{
Reason, ain't got any cash on my own creditcard so have to use my brothers, student+end of the month=gg
I would buy one but unfortunately i can't watch it live because of work. I always spoil the results via the thread or via liquidbet so it kind of takes away the point to watch the games.

iirc *everyone* had that issue, it was resolved 10 seconds into the first game.
I bought all of them so far and I am quite satisfied with what I am getting. I can't watch the games live during the week as I am at work, so I mainly use the VODs at my convenience. The only thing I thus far watched live were both the finals and luckily I didn't have any stream issues thus far.
I bought season 2 ticket and will buy season 3 ticket. However, if they don't fix issues with Europe in season 3, I won't buy tickets for further seasons.
I'll take it for the second time. In GSL1 I had the time to watch the matchs live, but since GSL2 I can't anymore because of school and I'm glad I can watch VoDs with good quality (and they post them pretty fast). Totally worth it.
I literally just bought tickets for seasons one through three. But, I just realized I would've saved $13 had I bought the ticket for both seasons two and three together instead of separately... -_-
I waited with my purchase through season 1&2 because I was too unsure of the quality of the matches, presentation, stream and of the shedule. Now that I know that I really like to watch GSL I decided to finally buy my first ticket. Even though the stream might have problems, I was being a leech until now and the quality of commentating, the games and the playerpool got a lot better over the seasons. I'm happy that I finally bought it and hope that it will help GOMTV enough (I have no idea how feasible their concept is...),
On November 19 2010 11:07 Subversion wrote: ill buy it for the VODs, not the stream
Same here. Stream just doesn't work, which is a shame since it's supposed to be included in the ticket, but the VODs are always up quickly after the matches took place and are high quality, you got to give them that. Livestreams are at inconvenient times for me anyway.
Despite choppy stream here in the UK, which isnt necessarily GOMTV's fault (could be various ISP's fault between SK->US->Europe), one can easily see the value of spending 15$ on something like 40+ hours of entertainment.
VODs alone make it worthwhile, the casting archon makes up for lack of technical quality and quite frankly, I want more GSLs in the future, would like to see more foreigners attracted to attending and competing. So by buying a ticket, I support what gives me entertainment. Thats the way money is supposed to be spend, aside from the basic necessities in life, isnt it.
To be honest no other tournament out there matters. The GSL as far as SC2 is concerned for me is where the pros are, any where else it's just boring. It's where I watch the state of the game, and to see about balance. You're aren't watching starcraft 2 if you're aren't apart of Gomtv with tastosis.
On November 19 2010 17:00 dtz wrote: bought it in s1 and s2.
but in the middle of s2 there was this bug when suddenly i can't play the vods anymore.
The message was something like " unable to stream. something about my firewall blocking" although i had the same exact settings all along and just the previous day i could run it no problem.
Tried installing-reinstalling, relogging in, etc and still doesn't work. So i can't play the hq live stream anymore so won't be buying it.
The stream was good in quality though for me so i'd recommend anyone who doesn't get bugged by the technical problem to get it.
iirc *everyone* had that issue, it was resolved 10 seconds into the first game.
Hm no for some reason i still got that error message until now whenever i try HQ and SQ live. Only SQ test works for me.
Voted for yes, and i've bought one before. Even though i haven't bought my s3 one yet. But i will. No question. Season 2 ticket was one of the best dollar vs entertainment value purchases i've made ever.
I have to watch the VODs though since at least in season 2 the first game started around 11pm my time and i have a 7:00->3:30 day job.
Did not, and haven't done so for previous seasons. Don't have the time to watch them live, and if I'm gonna watch VODs I prefer BW anyway, and I don't really spend enough time watching VODs to justify paying for the GSL anyway. Maybe when the main tournament comes around I'll go for it though.
On November 19 2010 17:30 Jukebox Joe wrote: Going to be buying mine for the 3rd time, hopefully they'll fix the lag on the HQ stream this time. I gave up last season and just watched the VODs
I've watched just about every one live cause I just have that kind of time sometimes and I've never had lag even once, i think its more likely your connection lol. anyways I love the GSL I will buy every event that comes out and support the tournament my only problem is even though they sped sc2 up I dont like watching it as much as brood war haha.
As some others mentioned. Bought season 1 and 2, but now because only 12(?) protoss I wont buy. Tired of seeing tvz tvt zvz instead of my own race. Same goes for live streams.
More time to play myself.
(+ annoying live stream problems. .in europe atleast)
i bought one because i can rarely watch the games live and watching them later in hq is nice in season 2 i bought a ticket around mid season because all the games i wanted to see, i could not.. damn rl :D
Third ticket here. Hardly watch stream though, even if I have the possibility to, because the HQ VoD's are so much better quality and when pre-buffered, lag free. (EU lag ftw? )
I bought for the VODs, because I can't watch it live. I wish they would pick a time where LIVE is accessible for more regions in the world. But now that I think about it, there isn't one
As much as I'd love to support GOM, enough is enough. I'm not paying for watching finals on a restream. They really need to get their shit together in Europe. Not buying another season until the issues have been resolved.
I recently bought the season 2 & 3 combined ticket for about 25$ or s.th. like that. I did it for the main purpose of watching the VODs and especially certain matches, that interesst me the most, when it comes to playstyles and so on and I want to learn from them by myself. The only thing that bothers me a bit, is, that you sometimes can't follow the build orders or production timings in the matches flawlessly, because of the nature of the castings. Yeah, the unit tab seems opened most of the times, but you miss a lot of things going on in the match just by the fact, that Tastosis can't focus anything, that's going on in the match.
But overall a great purchase and a good investment and I personally think, that the quality of the VODs are overall good.
I also would support the "foreinger scene" alike, if there were a bigger tournament on a regular basis, where you get so much additional high quality contents (VODs, players, casters, organisation).
Never bought one. Price is unjustified. If it's online. You can always get it for free. Would buy if it's around $1-2/season. Pretty much like price of a $1 CD.
Bought season 1 and 2, not buying it this time. No point in paying for something when they dont deliver. If they fix their streaming issues to europe I'll buy a ticket.

Because something is online means it should be free is stupid logic.
I might. I can watch almost all of the games live since I can keep them on in the background at work and GSL starts at 11 AM in Sweden after the round of 64. I also don't mind the quality in the free stream. However, it would be cool to have access to VODs and 15 dollars is nothing.
Since there is no way to tell whether the incessant lag has been fixed for the HQ stream, i won't be buying a ticket for season 3. I'll probably use the money to buy the new Assassins Creed game.
I did and I'm proud to support eSport. Seriously, these guys are really trying, even though many people have had problems with the stream. I mean, some people asked for VODs from the prelims, and then they released them shortly after.
If they would fix streaming to Europe, I'd immediately buy one (as I did for season 1 and 2). But with lagging streams and insane vod loading times, I am really not interested, which is quite sad as the content is probably great.
I live in the US. I bought a season 2 ticket. I didn't have many problems. Occasionally I couldn't get on the HQ or SQ stream right away but after about 10 minutes of SQ Test stream, I could get on the HQ stream. Plus with work, I don't have as much time to watch the streams, at least the ones that air late at night in the US. So I can have the HQ VODs which are also nice. Occasionally they'd lag. But if I let them load for 30 seconds, it would load nicely and have no more problems.
Debating wether or not to buy a third one. As has been mentionned before, the service is iffy to say the least for European viewers. With that said, I was still able to watch about half the games in HQ and I know some of my friends enjoy the VOD access so it's not that bad of a deal overall. Now if only we could get some sign from GOM that things are going to improve...
I'm still taking it under consideration. I've never been able to properly watch the HQ stream and had to resort to the LQ one every time. I did use some VODs though. I will see, still have plenty of time to decide.
I bought the second season ticket in hope that they had improved the stream. I'm going to buy the third season ticket aswell, mainly because of the VODs. But even the vods require preloading in HQ. Artosis said that ALL the money goes to improving the stream, can't see any improvements so far.
i bought season2 but the live stream quality is a LOL so i am considering if i should get it this time :/ HQ speed is simply too slow and i feel like i only paid for VODs more than the whole package like every other 'normal' customers.
gomtv should really QA their europe service. until then, i will see if i will pay for season 3.
I've bought my third season ticket by now, but it's not really all that expensive for a norwegian.
Just having the option of watching Foxer vs kyrix games over and over was worth the small pricetag for season 2, and there was a whole lot of other games worthy of repeating. My HQ stream works half the time, but I have it basicly for the vods.
I don't think S3 is worth it. I'm mainly interested in watching protoss, my fave race, and there aren't enough of them. I don't want to see an absurd amount of TvZ.
Interesting that there are about as many new buyers as there are old buyers who won't buy this season.
Anyway, I bought the S3 ticket, the price for a repurchase is basically 2/3rds of the price of one single new DVD, or just over the price of a movie ticket. It's worth it. Choppy streams don't bother be too much as I'm generally in school when the games are live, I but it for the 720p VODs.
I didn't but a ticket the 1st season, but for the 2nd season I bought the S1+S2 packet to watch all the good games I missed.
I won't buy one just because i'm at work most time the games will be played. And for the games that i can watch the low quality stream is enough for me.
On November 19 2010 22:38 seanisgrand wrote: I really want to buy one but the service quality comments have me worried. $20 isn't that much but I want to be able to watch live and not just VODs.
i just bought mine, for the 720p VODs - totally worth it
if you are in the US, the live streams should be fine. I watch them sometimes, but it's a bitch getting up at 5 am (or staying up till 2 if you're on West coast)
There's this awesome little website where some dude manages to rip the GOMTV VODs and post them pretty much as soon as they come up and that's how I watched the first season. I was never up for live anyway so I just made sure I didn't get spoiled.
I bought season 2 though, and I'm happy I did, and I plan on buying season 3. Honestly, and this is coming from a guy who has pirated every album I've listened to and every movie I've seen for the past 4 years, I couldn't be happier that I spent the money.
Sure, the VODs load really slowly even on a fast connection and require a lot of pre-buffering, you can't download them even though you paid good money for them, the streams are choppy and I always found myself on the free SQ stream when watching live anyway since the HQ stream was so laggy...
...But this is a corporation that is employing people as dedicated, passionate, and awesome as John, Artosis, and Tasteless (and probably many more that never find their way to the spotlight). and it's doing great things for the scene. How could you argue that it's bad for e-sports to have to pay when you look at the (unprecedented) attention SC2 and GSL are getting compared to BW and seeing what a great thing GOM and tastosis are managing to put out there? The games are incredible, the casting is entertaining and well-informed.
If there's one form of corporate media you should be supporting, it's this one. GOM is actually trying to reach out to the foreign community and get e-sports out there to the world at large, and while they're having hitches and technical problems (mostly because they didn't expect the response to be this large) they're handling it in a way that's honest and they're supporting the scene in a big way.
Not to mention, what better way to support e-sports than helping GOM to prove to foreign broadcasters and to sponsors that it's a profitable endeavor?
well I'm thinking about buying one ..not sure though. I would buy it only for the VODs so I can watch the games at a reasonable time. I'm currently considering either buying a ticket or frapsing everything to watch the games afterward.

didnt have one for season 1. bought one for season 2 and was really dissappointed. its not fun to see toss losing every game and even the games they won were crappy. i really like to watch the other matchup (tvz), but for me its beaten to death. if i get word that this season was especially great toss-wise, i will buy a ticket and enjoy the vods, but otherwise, no, i dont think so.
I've purchased it for the first time. I watched GSL2 using the free low quality streams for the games I had time to see, but I missed a fair few matches (including the BoxeR vs Kyrix) as the schedule conflicted with my college classes.
I doubt I'd be able to have a decent HQ streaming here in the UK with 8mps connection, but I plan on watching the VOD's at least this time.
I hope that MLG follow GSL's example so they have a bigger prize pool to award the StarCraft 2 players (and only them, not the other games) in order to attract more players globally who otherwise would not attend due to the low cost/benefit of paying for a flight and not getting enough from the prize money for it being a worthwhile trip. It would also be nice if "premium" viewers are not exposed to those garbage adverts and Octoshape of course.
Yep, i had no issues with the HQ VODS from season 2 either at home or at work. Definitely worth the $15 to me. I'm can't stay up and watch them live, so the VODS are what I'm interested in.
I bought before seing who qualified for it, I expected a lot more protoss (tester, huk, ...) But now i'm kind of sad seing the low P count, I'll probably just watch the P games for this season. I'll wait before buying S4 next time !!
I bought my third ticket. Some will say only suckers pay for sc2 and others will see it as a good value for hours of entertainment.
I am the one who think $15.00 for about a month of watching roughly 50-60 hours of vod's entertaining. Also with the RO64 in season 2 having the 2 times during the day I got to catch some live games in HQ and it worked awesome.
I bought season 1 and 2; I can't watch live so vods are what I am interested in.
However, I wasn't as thrilled about watching them as I thought I would be. I watched pretty much all the vods a lot of it wasn't *that* entertaining. Some was very good, obviosuly like kyrix vs foxer, but a lot of it seemed mediocre.
I will be able to watch some of this first round live though as the times are good and I have thanksgiving break for the wednesday/thursday. I will watch: -ret live at 11 EST on tuesday -all games 11:00 EST wednesday live
and maybe the games thursday morning live. Depends how tired I am; I probably will though. So if those games are good I will buy, or if jinro, ret, and idra all advance (I won't spoil myself on the other foreigners until after I make my decision to buy or not).
I bought one in season 2 and I won't buy one now. I could watch HQ barely 20% of the time without lag.
That said though, I might end up caving if I miss any good games, for the VODs. But I don't know what else I can do however small to make a point and get them to fix their routing to Europe.
The GSL is bringing the big SC1 names over to SC2, making the scene so much more interesting
GOM is bringing us all this action in English.. with two unique, genuinely funny and just plain baller casters.
Thats worth 15 dollars to me.
People are faarrr too used to free stuff on the internet.. they're almost angry when something isn't free.. yet they'll go out and blow 5000 dollars on cheetos, red bull and spot cream a month.
$15 is way too much in my opinion. If it was $5 I would buy without question. If it was $10 I'd at least consider it. Instead I'll try to watch what I can live or read the live report threads.

15$ really isn't much considering the quantity and quality of games. MLG charge 30$ or something along those lines for a weekends worth of content in HQ, and blizzcon was around twice that? 15$ is a really really good price.
Purchased 1 and 2, not yet purchased 3 but I will be. I do not watch games live, and I have time to pre-load every video so the 1M VOD is perfect for me.
Can't watch HQ live, have to go SQ half of the times.
But i watch all the VOD so no problems, and since video are good quality (not like S1), i already get it. (Btw i have to preload the vids but i open more than one vids on firefox tabs and it's fine).
Europe is pain, because the stream travels via usa (done tracert) but well can't do anything.
My isp has garbage transit, i have got issue with youtube and some us websites often.
I bought a pass for S2, and while I'm disappointed with the racial distribution of season 3, I'll still be buying a pass. The quantity and quality (after ro64 mostly) of VODs offered for $15 feels unmatched right now. MLG does great with releasing replays, but a lot of times I really enjoy being able to eat some food while watching a starcraft vod. Replays take a bit more energy to watch.
Then again I'm splitting the cost with a friend, so it's an even better deal for me.

GSL2 (games + interviews) was 48 hours, 52 minutes and 28 seconds of content over 15 days (22.5 GB)
for $15, that's about 30 cents an hour of content, well worth it in my opinion!
I bought it in the small hope that HQ will actually be watchable in EU....if it isn't I guess it'll be another season of only using my pass to watch a few VoDs.
I was on the fence about getting it since I find the lack of Protoss very unappealing as well
Yup I bought one. My friend had a season pass for season 2 and let me use it to watch some of the VODs. I found myself watching it quite a bit so I figured might as well get one of my own this time. It's definitely worth the money if you find yourself watching a lot of VODs. You're probably gonna be spending your money doing something else to entertain yourself anyway, I think it's worth it.
I watch the Vod's mainly and I'm at a point where $15 is clearly worth that many hours of content. Plus when I have used the stream it's worked fine for me (except some hiccups during the season 1 opener, but I'm fine with that).
Have to say to though, had it been 5 bucks more expensive i would not but it, for the stream rarely worked for me during season two. I see it as a payment for the vods, and any stream success comes as a bonus.
They even added a disclaimer that you cant expect service out of korea for crying out loud.
I don't see why every single person who loves competitive SC here on TL isn't buying one. It is supporting SC2, and even better, E-Sports. They do an awesome job over at GOM and the price for the amount of content you get is absolutely worth it. If you don't like the live service, then watch the VOD's like I do which is just as exciting and higher quality.
EDIT- Btw if you have an HD 1080 TV and a PS3, you can view the VOD's in HQ on your TV using the internet browser on the PS3. This allows awesome full screen SC2! It's basically like watching a show on TV, only its SC2 and its awesome!
Also bought my third ticket. Its not much money, the games and commentating are exciting and i support esports. and i often have to watch the vods, because of time zone.
On November 20 2010 07:24 Instigata wrote: i knew blizzard would figure out a way to milk sc2 like WoW.
You obviously don't want to better E-sports. What most people fail to realize is that for any business to run, it needs money. Them asking us to pay a small price to help build a great E-sports organization is completely reasonable. When you go to the supermarket, do they give you your food for free? I don't think so. It's like 50 cents a game to enjoy English commentating along with bettering the community. It's people with the same attitude as you that are stunting that growth.
Will buy my 3rd ticket soon. Season 2 was an improvement over the 1st quality wise and I watch about 80% of matches past ro32 so it's easily worth it. Besides, both of my roommates watch it too.

I bought tickets the last 2 seasons but as for many europeans the HQ stream was not working and even the VOD were sometime loading very slowly .. therefore I really don't know if i'm going to buy a ticket for this season . I'm ok with supporting e-sport and everything , but I mean ... I can watch 1080 HD on youtube from some random guy (hi HD ) but Gom can't provide a good support for their videos and the HQ videos still look really bad ... something is wrong :s. Even the stream for MLG was way better . I think I will end up buying one but still , I hope they're going to fix it this season.
Bought the season 3 ticket.. Eventho I mostly can't watch the games live.. So really doing it for the VODs atm.. It still sucks that I have to preload for the HQ VODs, but I hope they will improve it this or next season. And it is only like 11 euro so it isn't that bad I guess..

And here I was thinking I had fast net xD Honestly, I have to agree that the live service isn't as good as it could be, however I think their infrastructure just isn't big enough to support it quite yet. They mentioned that at one point they had over 500,000 people watching the live stream for a Boxer game..that is some serious bandwidth if those numbers are really true. I would assume as they get bigger (ie people buying season tickets!) that this service will improve significantly.

well that's illegal
but seriously, I like to think that by buying a ticket it helps improve the qualitiy and bandwith some time in the future. Also Tastosis needs his salary
I bought 2, but I will definitely not buy a S3 ticket.. the HQ stream was unwatchable, and 720p VODs are also unwatchable on my otherwise fine 20Mbit connection. Ill just watch the SQ live that I normally do, and watch the VODs in 720p on illigal places that can buffer just fine.

I'm amazed how many people here cite problems with accessing the stream or even the VODs, but in the same sentence mention how they've bought all tickets and will continue to do so "for the good of Esports".
Now, I'm all for Esports myself and want it to get big too. But that won't happen just by paying for a service that fails to deliver content properly. That's not the way to go and will only get the associated companies the wrong impression (bandwith/server issues but people pay anyway? alright!).
This isn't supposed to be GomTV bashing, I think they're doing a great job on the whole; but they're also lacking in certain areas, such as connection issues to Europe. They have to work on that so that people will pay for it, not the other way around.
I wont be able to watch many games live this season because it is the same time I have to work...... I consider buying it for the VODs though. Would be hours of entertainment and I could watch them whenever I have the time... Does anyone know if they upload the vods spoiler free? Or do you see the amount of games played when you want to watch a VOD?
HQ stream was always fine for me until the ro4 in GSL 2, after which it was unwatchable every night. Not sure if it was just the high level of traffic or something else, but I'll give them the benefit of the doubt and purchase one more season, since I like supporting the scene and I do enjoy the HQ VODs. Hopefully they can increase the reliability of the HQ stream, in which case I'm happy to pay.
1) Im not that much for watching VODs, which essentially takes away half the fun of watching it because you know its not live. 2) My bank really likes to fuck me up and sometimes I just cant buy shit over the internet 3) I usually have breaks between 11am-3pm (which is around the time its played) so I can still watch it live.

They are spoiler free. All you have to do is not to look at comments before you press play and turn the vod in full screen.
You don't see the amount of games, extra games are faked if they don't exist.
I didn't buy a ticket. I usually just wait for TL to do recaps on all the rounds until the final, and watch the finals on the free stream at 5am in the morning.
I would buy it without hesitation if HD stream worked. My connection is great, but that stream won't work for the life of me. Payed last month so.. yeah. I'm also a bit uninterested in the GSL compared to events like MLG. When all foreigners were knocked out I just stopped caring, sue me but I guess I just feel more connection to players who are a bit more 'alive' in interviews and such

now let's hope they've heard all the comments about streaming and bought some bandwidth in EU

They are spoiler free. All you have to do is not to look at comments before you press play and turn the vod in full screen.
You don't see the amount of games, extra games are faked if they don't exist.
they even hide the comments by default now - they are definitely pretty good about taking feedback and improving
now let's hope they've heard all the comments about streaming and bought some bandwidth in EU
Wow, thanks for the info. That sounds great. Chances are 99% I am going to buy a ticket when I am back home tomorrow
Bought S1, S2 and going to buy S3. I loved watching the games.
One thing is that they've been pretty good listening to feedback: 1) HQ vids (S2 videos looked really good). 2) Their stream has improved. 3) They hide comments by default,
No,im from greece and even though my internet connection is fine gom couldnt handle a freakin 650 kbps stream! I payed the 20$ and was forced to watch the LQ stream. I would be willing to pay again if gom were to fix their servers(many ppl from europe were complaining besides me)
Vods were horrible too,the only time i could watch HQ(1mbps) VOD's and not have lag were some insane hours(1 am- 9 am).
Just bought a ticket (first timer). I hope it doesn't lag, but I don't plan to watch most games live anyways, so carefree vod watching alone justifies the purchase (if it is carefree that is).
haven't bought the 2 previous and won't for GSL3, stream is WAAAAAAAAAAY to unpredictable for me to pay for it if it was a stable as MLG/IEM have been(with only minor hickups) then i would concider it, but seeing people who payed good money for it, just so they can't even watch it live and have to find the hidden livestreams is not very motivating
tbh i would rage like no tomorrow if that happened to me and i payed for it
I will buy if there is gonna be matches starting earlier than 19 just to check VoDs like I did for season 2. But since I can't use the GomTV player because of the 0x0000071 error and they don't have any support for paying customers I won't buy it for the live stream
I bought s1 and got s2 and s3 for free due to whatever screw up earlier on. I'm not buying a ticket ever again. I'm "watching" currently. About 2 fps, disconnects every 2 - 3 minutes. Single worst stream I've ever watched, consistently. I cannot advise against buying this more, even if you pass their 'bandwidth test' as I did easily.
Now that GSL 3 is on.any european who had lag last season that can confirm whether EU stream improved or if its still shit? I cant do the network check for some reason, just keeps on checking, checking and checking.

If its good I'll buy the ticket right away.
I't strange for me. Can run for periods of up to 1/2 hour smoothly then just fail at low fps and constant dc's for an hour. Can only watch on the LQ stream, which is strange as surely there are less on the HQ stream.
I may gladly switch to a re-stream soon, as I've tried the legit way and the supportive way but if I'm watching a laggy game, then it skips to Artosis & Tasteless mid game as the stream sorts its life out and I've missed 1/2 of a great game it gets annoying.
I didn't buy a ticket and haven't in the past - don't have the money unfortunately. Plus there are only a few players I really want to see and I don't mind watching the SQ stream for those select players.
Bought season 1, 2 and 3. I normally just watch the HQ vods though as im not really around when the games are streamed. Avoids any problems with streaming I guess
I bought it despite being from EU with a rarely functioning HQ stream. It's definitely worth it just to be able to watch the VODs when I get home from work.
Europeans, are we getting better support on our lagfest that s1 and s2 has been? How is live HD for europeans now in s3? Would love some feedback on it.
I wont buy one until they price it reasonably. $240 a year is not acceptable (nor is $185 with a -$5 discount for previous purchases.) It should be like $50 a year, tops.

It's still completely shit.
I bought it though. Supporting esports and all that crap... ><

Spread over a whole year that's pretty good considering you get a ton of content, they do have to make some money after all since we're not getting ads. If they manage to get some sponsors running commercials in the breaks the price might be able to go down. But in general people today aren't ready to pay what things actually cost I suppose.
And honestly, 15$ per month is pretty much no money at all for me. And I got a minimum wage job working ~100 hours per month.
Comes down to principles in the end I suppose. The hq streaming isn't worth it at all here in sweden, I mainly get it for the VODs, as well as supporting esports. So I understand people who don't want to pay for it because of that. But whining over the price is just stupid, You could get 1.5 fast food lunches for it here in sweden, and I rather have GOM vods .

It's not a good deal. The "tons of content" thing is thrown around all the time and sounds like a cop-out. The problem with the comparisons people like to make (e.g. movie ticket prices) is that the things being compared aren't good deals whatsoever. I could play an MMO like WoW and get several times the amount of "hours of content" for less money. I could play just about any Steam game online and get an unlimited amount of "hours of content" for no additional fee. Hell, I could get 20 meals for that same $15-20 because I don't blow ridiculous amounts on fast food.
You can get an HQ stream or VoDs pretty much anywhere without buying a ticket when it comes right down to it. The only reason to even buy one is to support the tournament, but the price is completely prohibitive.
Oh, and being able to afford it is hardly an issue. It's simply just not worth its cost. Marginally better video quality and slightly faster VoDs will never be worth $200+ to me. I also take exception to someone calling a 650kbps stream HQ, but that's for another day.
Could you give some examples as to where you get a HQ stream for less? MLG charge 10$ per event, ESL are cheaper, but don't seem to be doing all that many events. Of course, their HD streams work flawlessly while goms is unwatchable for me, but that's another issue entierly .
And the 15$ I drop on WoW is certainly worth less than GSL at the moment, although that might change in a few weeks. You keep saying the comparasions aren't good deals. Which is bloody stupid, things cost money, that's the way the world works. I could get a movie ticket for the GSL price as well, and I consider VODs for the games I can't catch to be worth more than that. Saying a movie ticket is a bad deal is an opinion I guess, but that doesn't change the cost of it.
And how is the price prohibitive to supporting the tournament if you can afford it? Unless you don't feel it's worth your time to support it that is.
i bought mine this morning just before the ro64 start, i know its goin to be worth it when i miss a live night b.c of work or something. After missing the gsl2 finals b.c of work and having only the 1st match to watch i was bummed. The hq stream seemed a lil bit better then the SQ atleast to me on my big tv and pc monitors so im enjoying it. I see people posting about how its stupid and ways to get around it but for 20$ id rather not waste my time with that
Well Craton to some people, the worth of purchasing a season ticket is different from others. Just keep that in mind. It's unfortunate that you think the measly $15 isn't worth it for the amount of content you get, and I'm happy that $15 doesn't amount to anything when it comes to getting a piece of GSL.
It's just like how for something that you would think would be well-worth your money, wouldn't be the same worth as another person. For example, you would think that buying a month of WoW would be a good purchase considering you could basically play 24/7, so you would have loads of content on your hands. Logically it's a very sound statement, but to some people they would much rather spend that $15 on balloons, fill them up with water and throw them around at their friends. I think this was some really basic thing I learned in economics...
I'm not really going against your argument of what the worth of a season ticket is, just making sure to make this point clear so no one else has a silly misunderstanding.
I bought the season 3 ticket. Also bought it for season 2. The HQ stream was stuttering today (EU). Same thing as last season, so no surprise there. Do you get VODs for free without a season ticket? I thought you could only watch SQ Live for free, as well as the first set of each match as VOD.
Either way, I can't watch the live casts nearly every time, so I guess the HQ VODs justify the season ticket for me. Good entertainment!
I had problems with streaming in s2 but bought a ticket again for s3 and mainly for the VODs. Theres also an "OK" button now that says you might have problems with streaming and vod's if you're not in the server area but i hope their effort to reduce the lag don't end at that button lol
Purchased a ticket every time. Too bothersome to watch live streaming. Plus with VODs you get to skip the pre-game and post-game content if you don't have a lot of time to watch.

Your comparison is totally wrong. Watching GOM VoDs is an non-interactive activities. You are doing nothing except watching the game like watching the NBA. Paying for WoW or Steam games are interactive activities. The content do not come to you. You yourself create your own content. So comparing between the two activities is like comparing apple and orange.
While I was watching the live stream this morning I actually got confused thinking I picked the Low Quality stream and reset it on high. What a disappointed to realize I was already on High Quality. The quality of the video is just awful full screened.
I got the season 3 ticket last night, and I was very happy with it. I didn't get season 2, but I watched some of the marine micro vids on other sites.
My only complaints are that there is no native streaming support for non-Windows platforms. It's kind of a pain to have to look at page source code to find the link for the live video to paste into VLC. At least in VLC I was able to increase the buffer cache to prevent stuttering, though.
The high-def VODs look great, they're what I will normally watch because the live doesn't start until 6 AM for me, so it's kind of weird waking up to watch it. Surreal, actually.
Tastosis is still great, but I think GOM needs to mix up the commentating a bit, I think Tasteless is getting a bit fatigued and doesn't contribute too much other than "oh my god, this is so high level."

I like how you compare food, video games, on-demand content, and movies all within the same $20, then defend yourself by saying "price isn't an issue".
Piracy can only get you so far, as whats being re-streamed and re-uploaded isn't reliable and won't always be up.
Yes, I just did! US$19.95 is incredibly good value! (Especially since the US$ is so cheep at the moment.)
Now I can watch the re-streams (I'm on a mac) without feeling guilty for not supporting the cause and will always have access to the season 3 VODs without having to bear with slow, low def shit dubbed in chinese.
If I were a well-moneyed person (or any sort of moneyed!) I would have bought all three. I watch what I can from Youtube, and I'm always so excited when a new game gets uploaded. I'm sure it's been mentioned before, but this is 20 bucks a month, roughly. That's half the price of a carton of cigarettes it's one less visit to a sit-in restaurant, one less case of beer.
I guess my point is that humans have historically made worse investments.
I've bought a ticket in season 2 and 3 (i didn't watch in season 1). Although i pretty much watch all the games live anyway, because due to my timezone it starts at 6pm which is pretty perfect for me but i figure i might occasionally want to see a VOD and i like to support the community, it's great having English commentary in contrast to sc1. I haven't been able to get any use out of the HD stream because i find it lags too much but i have no problems with the standard definition (well except for the grand final of season 2 and i don't think i was alone there). The fee isn't exorbitant for someone who works full time but its a question of your priorities i guess.

Plus you get the original commentary, the pre-game and post-game showboating, and, if you can get the live stream working, the priceless feeling of "I WAS THERE," like when Fruitdealer won those incredible matches in Season 1 when Zerg was "underpowered," or when Foxer clawed his way to the top with a never-before-seen strategy. Participating in the threads on Liquid while the tournament is running is a wonderful, networked thrill that is the culmination of modern technology and interconnectedness.
It's this uniqueness, specifically, that draws me to pro Starcraft!

I must agree with you on the commentating part. Overall I think it's fine, but there is a lot of repetition. Anyway, I think there was a thread dedicated to this, so I won't go OT here.
Third time buyer here, solely for the VOD's (I did watch IdrA play live when it was much earlier). Love Tastosis and I find the quality of the games and the excitement of the tournament better than anywhere else.
For those arguing we shouldn't have to pay for this content, it is completely unrealistic to expect the same out of Starcraft as something such as FIFA or the NFL. You have to realize that e-sports is something still new to a lot of people and putting out a free, televised broadcast wouldn't generate enough ad revenue to support itself. Who are you kidding? Maybe someday, but we won't get there if the e-sports fans now aren't willing to give its support.
I just make an effort to be awake to watch the games I'm really interested in live, which is not particularly a problem for the evening games being a student in the UK (10am live broadcast start).
I just use the free Low-Qual link - although that said, I might pick up a pass anyway because I'm quite sure that - at least for this season - there will be some games I can't be around/awake to see live but I really don't want to miss - particularly them foreigner games (perfect example being Hayder playing in the early hours tmrw... :/)
It's all good though, support what you love and such.
Not hours, but I can't stream the hq vods (even though my connection could), I have to buffer. Main problem right now is that the vods are skipping because of errors during encoding. Dunno whats up, but some games are unwatchable. Hope they fix it (day 1 and 2 it happens in a couple of vods). Don't buy if you are thinking about it, especially if you are from Europe. Right now it ain't worth it at all.
to be honest, i'm kind of conflicted with whether it was a worthwhile decision to buy a ticket this season cus the vod encoding is just fucking terrible. like seriously, it's not hard at all to encode a video...
Is it possible to watch VODs with the GOMPlayer? I'm also having the problem with VODs stuttering. I'm pretty much justifying the season ticket price with the access to VODs. If they don't work flawlessly it really is a problem (not to mention the live streams are lagging).
I bought one for season 2, I did not buy one this season. The reason why I didn't is because of lag issues for europeans. Last season I ended up watching restreams for the majority of the games. I watch exclusively restreams this season.
I watch every single game live so I have no need for VODs.
If they fix the lag for us europeans I will pay them again.
Of course I bought one, GSL and Tastosis are so exciting to watch. How can you be bored watching the greatest sc2 tournament of all time once a month and that for the cost of one dinner

As far as I know it is not possible. But the stuttering is caused by bad encoding, not by ones connection, so it wouldn't make much of a difference, it would still be unwatchable.
I bought a S2 and S3 ticket and I'm happy of course with Tasteless and Artosis. They're screwing up sometimes but it really just makes it more fun to watch. I never feel like it detracts from the experience when they're like all confused waiting for the voice to announce the player... makes me giggle every time.
The problem is the technical aspects.. I wish I could actually use what I paid for. The live streams, both low and high quality, are awfully low quality (650kbps for high quality? it's very low res indeed, free ustream channels have much higher quality), and the high quality stream is never smooth for me. So even though I have the season ticket I still have to watch the low quality stream which just pisses me off sometimes.
Having access to the VODs though at least allows me to watch the best matches in high quality, as the VODs are higher quality than the stream, you actually do get high quality there. I'm not sure right now but it looks like 720p and has a high bitrate. Looks good and sharp. Again here though, it doesn't run smooth. I need to leave the high quality VODs on pause for like 30-50% of the length to let it cache so that I can then have smooth playback.
Obviously for VODs it's not a big issue, so I'm fine with that. I just wish the live stream would run better because low quality live stream has such a low bitrate that the picture is unbearable on a high definition TV, which is how I prefer watching SC2. Would probably at least be decent with the high quality stream, if it ran properly.
So bottom line: There's good and bad sides. Personally I feel that the 20$ is easily worth it for the amount of VODs that you get, with great commentary and great players. I'd be willing to pay more if only the live streams were higher quality and actually working properly.
-edit- Just a note, I can confirm that there is encoding problems on the latest VODs. Skips around weirdly sometimes and produces sound and video artifacts. It's quite annoying but I'm sure they'll sort it out soon because there were no such issues last season that I know of.
Bought all 3 seasons, never had problems with lag or anything not working... Incredible investment for the time I've spent watching games/money spent. Catch the first few games before work, watch vods after with dinner.
Yeah everyone can complain as much as they want about the livestream. It's better than any other livestream of the GSL (which there is none), so whatever. It's better than the free stream of MLG. And in MLG you only get to watch like 1/10th of the matches because they cram it into 3 days. GSL has higher production values than any other tournament currently, every match of the 64 competitors is professionally casted in 2 languages, cmon now.
It's worth it, I keep buying it, and I'm pretty stingy with my money. Look at it this way, the average time of a series is about 30 minutes max, maybe more or less. That's 50-60 hours of footage (averaging here, be nice), for 15 bucks? Cmon people quit whining. You spend 20 bucks on a dvd for some crappy 2 hour movie.
This was actually the first time I've paid for anything e-sports related. I didn't get to watch any of GSL2, which was leaving me kind of sad. Then, browsing GOMtv, I saw the 25 buck season 2/3 package deal they have going. I bit. Now I'm highly enjoying catching up with season 2 and look forward to watching every reasonable-western-time GSL3 cast. I'd say it was worth it.
Season 3 they seem to have improved the HQ VOD quality but now all of the VODs are choppy. SQ is ok for the most part but the HQ is pretty bad. Even if you let the VOD fully load first, it still skips around.
First time I have had problems with the site. I am hoping more people are having this problem so they can fix it.
I know a lot of people think its a good deal but the price is still a little high in my opinion. They are obviously getting plenty of viewers considering the bandwidth issues. I think they should get rid of the free stream and change the price to $10. Also some additional subscription models would be a good idea, 3 month, 6 month and 1 year for example.
there are some issues with the season 3 vods atm. The encoding seems to be messed up in some vods resulting in choppy video and audio and some vods of day 2 load extremely slow. There are a lot of people who have those issues so I'm pretty sure it's on gom.tv's end. Don't know what got messed up there but it's really annoying and I hope they will fix it soon... : /
Exactly, the big deal is that at the same time as GSL you also have the 3 brood war tournaments going, all high budget, high production value, and all completely free to watch on nevake. And weve been having some of the most killer games ever in the latest pro league season, the new map pool owns. So unfortunately the pay-for-view sc2 scene has some trouble keeping up with the excellent quality of recent BW pro scene.
Can't even watch the sq vods due to lagging. Thanks gom, seems you invest my money wisely into coke and hookers. Guess next season I just watch vods on youtube, as "the pirates" are more competent.

dude...that was GSL1... it is a well known game(how idra get knocked out by cheese in the first biggest sc2 tourney on planet earth).
the bad stream speed to europe is still bad(i tried LQ stream =_= and ended up go watch restream) so i am defo not paying for this season.
Unable to watch HQ live in EU? Too bad, I'll still pay. Support esports, you know?

Heh, no.

So far IDRA has been the best, but its going to be sad if we have to root for Loner or Sen or something.
TLO had some amazing games in both seasons, I dunno what you're talking about. If he had not had such an unlucky Ro64 pick in SangHo he probably could've gone far in GSL2.
And why would it be "sad" to have to root for Loner or Sen? Both are amazing non-Koreans who have legitimate chances of getting far in the tournament (or rather only Sen does, this season), and Loner has gotten just as far as Idra has IIRC. Don't confuse "foreigner" with "American", some of us other foreign fans might like these other guys more than Idra.
Finally, lol at "sucking horribly". If you're such an amazing foreigner allstar, may I suggest flying over to Korea and trying your hand at the qualifiers?
I sometimes had troubles to watch the stream in season 2, but I bought a ticket again just to support the GSL - I think they fully deserve it and they are trying their best. I want e-Sport to take the right way and grow big outside of Korea / China!

Ya, I don't know what's up but the VODs this season suck ass. They download as if I were on a 56k modem. Really dissapointed atm, but previously it's always been fine, so I'm hoping this is just a temporary thing.
I bought a ticket for this season and don't experience any problems thus far. I hope the streaming quality get better anyway cuz I heard a lot of people having problems aith the HD/premium thing.
Spoiler whine on this site is simply incredible, moreso than any site I've ever been a part of. I feel like if you come to TL, you're here to discuss all things SC2. It comes with the territory you might find out the results of tournaments, especially wonderful tournaments everyone wants to talk about. Coming to a thread about GSL and then complaining about spoilers is baffling to me.
On topic: purchased. I would recommend it to anyone.
As it turns out, I'm losing a lot of sleep to watch some of the game on live stream, and productivity at work is "a little lower" than usual streaming the previous day's VODs
Man I feel bad for the people who can't stream since I've had no problem. I feel bad for GOM too because they put the bandwidth checks there so people can make sure it will work but I think some people don't do that. If people in Europe are struggling with the stream it is probably due to international bottlenecks that are out of GOM's control. Or something? I'm not a networking expert but I live in Washington State and have average internet (which is shit internet compared to Europe) and I've never lagged once with the HQ stream. Even while torrenting. So GOM clearly has plenty of upload bandwidth and whatnot, but there are bottlenecks somewhere that are hurting some people.

I have way over the recommended bandwidth according to the check, but still when I watch the HQ it goes into choppy sessions where it's unwatchable. The SQ is fine though. It was like this last season too, but whatever I'll still pay.
I love how people claiming they have no problems, while gom acknowledge that they messed up the encoding for a couple of vods, so it is skippy for everyone. Saying "I have no problem" therefor translates to "I haven't watched vods and dunno what I am talking about", herp derp.
Bought a ticket for every season so far. Saved about $15 with the return buyer discount. Well worth it for not having to wait for a free slot in livestream even though last nights games were really difficult to watch as the GOMTV site was having issues. Will keep buying tickets though as I dont have a TV and I love SC2.
maybe a fix for laggy VOD's for some people, this worked for me.
I dont preload them anymore, i keep spamming F5 or opening multiple tabs of the same game till the buffer speed is normal and i dont have to pause. Really weird
I'm sick of people QQing about the videos being choppy, its not like GOM is trying to upload them like that. Besides, which do you think would make people more angry, choppy HQ video or no video at all?

exactly like this for me too^^ I want the Vods anyway so not getting HQ livestream is not that big of a deal, but their test shouldn't say i can watch it 100%npnpnp when it in fact gets choppy as hell
I just don't get it. I have one hell of an internet connection. I can stream HD movies on Apple TV without ANY preload. Every other video service I have ever tried works fine for me but the VODs from GSL. And I mean come on. The HD VODs aren't even youtube HD quality.
SQ works (mostly) fine and I can at least watch the games, so I'm not going berserk (yet ^^). Plus the games were mostly crappy terran all ins anyway. So I'm not too mad when even SQ is choppy as hell. Still 20 $ for payed VOD's and I can't even watch VODs properly?
First time buying season tickets. I've gotta say that for the amount of entertainment you get, it's a great buy. Since I can't watch it live, the VODs are great. Out of all of the series so far, I think only 3 or so games were choppy, the rest of the vods were smooth.

It is like a Youtube video, if you let it load in for a while then it plays perfectly. Best 15€ I spent and next season it is only 10€. That is really peanuts.
