Bonus pool isn't made to reward good players, bad players, casual gamers, or mass gamers. Bonus pool is made to reward active players. As long as you are playing actively ie: 1 win a day, you are going to eventually use up your bonus pool. The bonus points simply make it so that the ladder doesn't stagnate with a ton of inactive users. The inactives will quickly drop to the bottom of the ladder.

i believe it is the SC version of the experience system in WoW. serious people who wanna go pro should just ignore it, it is meant for giving casual gamers get more of an incentive to play the game like someone mentioned before .

GG people!!!

its clever but it completely fails in the fact that the cap will never be reached, elo is 9000+% better in this case
seriously, whod consider ladder ratings a judgement of anything if it will be completely different in 7 days..

Why do these posts keep popping up? There is 1 thread to rule them all and you can read all about the ladder system here: Click to learn that the System isnt screwing just you! Therefore you are not a special case

Everyone that posts these threads think they are being singled out or the system is broken read the thread understand waste less time because then all that happens is people coming with discussions like alot of threads You say X he says Y you counter with I played John who is 2000 pt diamond and I beat him and I'm in bronze league so there fore i should be promoted but John got there by using bonus pool its always the same everytime. Just read the thread people! That thing needs a sticky for real.

Oh here you go this is straight from blizzard!!!!!! About what is up with the bonus pool

Blizzard post explaining the ladder system

From Blizzards mouth

Q. What is the Bonus Pool and how are bonus points acquired?
A. The Bonus Pool is an accumulation of points that every player receives whether they're online and playing or not. They're essentially used as a means to help give a player a catch-up boost if they haven't played in a while. The pool does have a cap, but it increases slowly until the end of a season.
<--- Thats whats up with bonus pool!

There is your answer

It makes ladder non zero-sum, so you can't get #1 ladder and stop playing so no one will be able to surpass you.

It's the same reason divisions exist.

It lets lesser players feel like they're better than they are while making high-level ranking impossible.

Hopefully the Master league will have a more logical ladder system.

I wish there was an option to just add the bonus pool to your score, since that's the net result anyway.

I don't have time to play a bunch of 1v1s every day, and I'm perpetually sitting at 50-100 points. I certainly don't have the interest to play a dozen games in one sitting, either, especially on ladder.

As long as people are being ranked by rating, then this inflation is a pain in the ass.

Bonus pool also has another purpose that will make more sense in the coming seasons. With ratings inflating every week, it will stop players who get a high rating and just stop playing and reap the end of season rewards (titles, icons, etc). Bonus pool means you need to keep playing the game in order to keep up..

I'd say winning enough early on to get the points to stay at the top of the ladder by the end of the season is more worthy than grinding points with a bonus pool.

I agree bonus pool bugs me but I don't care about rating much anyways. I only get to play a few days a week and not at all during mid-terms/finals. I am a 1000 rating player in diamond but have a bonus pool of 600 and am constantly placed against a range of 1600-1900 players (which I have about a 70% ish win ratio against)

What if there was a certain imbalance/bug/exploit that people abused? In those scenarios, people could get high ratings and sit there, but with a bonus pool it means that even if an exploit/bug/imbalance occurs, if it ever gets fixed then the effect on the ladder will be minimal, people who get a high rating off the exploit/bug/imbalance will stay at that rating, yes, but it does mean the very top goes largely unaffected.

Not to mention just because you got to rank 10 at the very start of the rating means you deserve to be there 2-3 months later, game changes and people improve. I was a Silver League player 2 months ago and now I'm 1500~ diamond. Same with Pro-players, just watching the top players 2months ago compared to the top players now, the difference is pretty massive.

I HATE BONUS POOL

sooo stupid! the whole logic behind bonus pool is flawed IMO

i honestly get discouraged to play 1v1 because the bonus pool is so high. its doing the complete opposite of what it was intended too do. for me anyways.

i wish blizzard would remove it completely. that or display our MMR as well as rating
just the tip

It's not impossible to set a benchmark. The benchmark just changes over time. High Diamond will always be better than low diamond. High may be 2000 now and 2200 in a month.

If you don't have time to win 7 times a week then you don't play enough to have a statistically significant score anyway.

take your starting rating for day subtract used bonus pool

take ending rating for day subtract used bonus pool

subtract #2 from #1

You now have your +/- for the day

keep track of this every day

You can now see if your improve or not.

- - - -

Bonus Pool does a few things:

1) If someone takes a month long break, they don't suddenly have an impossible climb back up the ladder

2) If someone joins mid season, they still have a shot at #1 without having to play like 20x as many games as everyone else

3) It makes casuals feel nice because they have a good rating

Bonus pool does NOT:

1) Reflect true skill (You can be a 2,500 rated player but still not be at the level of a pro gamer, that's what tournaments are for)

2) Effect your match making (thats what your mmr is for, and your public Elo has no bearing on your mmr... although ur mmr does have a bearing on ur Elo but thats another topic)

What?

If you are 2500 then you reflect what a 2500 player is. You don't have to be a Programer, if you're 2500 then you are about the same skill level as most other 2500 players.

Bonus pool is 12 points per day. Assuming you are playing evenly matched players that should take you 2 games per day if you have a 50% win percentage. Lose 1, no effect on bonus pool. Win one for 10-15 points and your pool adds to that. You are playing 20 points per day and cannot use up your pool? Then either you stopped playing for a long period of time, or you have about a 5% win percentage.

Completely agree. I'd love to see MMR. Yay, I made it in to Diamond but I am "evenly matched" against plat players. Kind of makes Diamond seem silly when my MMR may not reflect that I am in the top 7% (or whatever Diamond is supposed to be). That and I have not played much since release (GenCon in August, CiV in September and Fallout New Vegas now.. so I have not been laddering much) which means just about every game I've played has been with bonus pool. In other words, my ranking is higher than it should be with how few games I've played. Which means my ranking is not an accurate representation of my skill level. I wish I could see my MMR compared to other people in my division to see how I am really doing.

Only 3 is a valid point.

1) is a complete illusion. You don't get more bonus points than the guy who kept playing. You actually have to play more due to the bonus points.

1 month = 360 bonus points. If you were 1500 when you went on your break and the other guy was also 1500, and went up 100 actual rating, he's now at 1960. For you to hit 1960 you have to go up 100 actual rating and win about 30ish games to earn the bonus points. If there were no bonus points, you could just come in, win 10 games and be at 1600.

2) is also wrong for exactly the same reason. Ladder ranks are based on rating. Regardless of what the accrued bonus pool is, you're going to get to your skill cap relatively quickly and then plateau at a specific rating.

Bonus points exist to create the illusion of progress when there's actually no progress being made, to create the illusion of stability when you're on a losing streak, and to create the illusion that you need to log in and play to earn those points.

Blizzard has gotten very good at making Skinner boxes.
