If you care about your face value Bonus Pool is good it makes you look good If you care about true competition it has no effect on who you play and you have various ways of checking top 200 If you don't care about either of these things your play is completely the same you can go on playing If you don't play enough to use it all you hardly have room to complain as 2 games a day is not difficult, thats 30 minutes a day less then what is cited as casual

The issue is that due to constant inflation, the visible rating has no real bearing on how good you are or how much you're improving.

I guess if they didn't: there would be a finite total number of points for the entire player pool with the exception of through addition of new players. Then the lowest players who lose even at a bronze level would be hovering around 0. Bonus pool rewards people who are actually good over people who just mass games.

It's a feel good mechanic that does it's job for the majority of players, the ones that should actually be concerned about their rankings have the TOP 200 and Bonus Pool isn't even an issue as everyone has played through theirs at that level. If your mid to high level diamond you should know the amount that your improving gauged on your play not that your #30254 player in the world and going no where fast Regardless of the inflation if your points are going up and your win % stays above 50% your improving and playing people better then you. If your % is lower and your still going up its due to inflation and you'll be roughly at the same place you were last time in your division. Just use common sense to figure things out for once in your life.. just because it's not there in the clear doesn't mean you can't answer it yourself with 5 minutes of work

Why should it? It's not supposed to be a rating of how good you are. Like almost every other game, Blizzard wants to reward players points for both winning the game AND playing the game. You just get more points if you win. This is like almost every other multiplayer game out there. Btw, it's not even labeled as a rating, just points.

If you mass games, even if you play at a 50% win rate, you'll burn through your bonus pool and end up with a lot of points. If you don't play a lot, then you'll never burn through your bonus pool and end up lower in points compared to someone who does.

The 'logic' behind it would be that players who haven't played a lot can easily catch up to the high levels. This is completely false though, the system is horribly inflated because of the bonus pool and will only take people who don't play much longer to reach the top because of it, especially as the bonus pool is so high that it takes damn long to deplete it if you dont play much. A much better system would be to just raise the K-level of your first 10-20 games. They will count more then and you will get to your appropiate ranking much faster. All the bonus pool does now is make sure there is no value in the points. The 2k level is crap in a month etc. With a proper elo system (with even decay instead of bonus points) you get levels that actually mean anything, which doesn't mean a whole lot but can definately be nice (if not alone for TL threads to give a certain quality threshold). The bonus pool is just an ugly system to make more laddering fun for those who care alot about the rating. The traditional ELO system is known to cause unhappiness to people as in some ways it favors playing less (if for example you play less concentrated if you mass games). History in other games has shown that people tend to play less with ELO systems then with other systems so I guess blizzard is taking another shot at some sort of inflated system they always do.. In my eyes they might as well have taken the level system from warcraft 3 then, feels better in that respect imo.

If the game didn't have bonus pools, people would just be stuck at X amount of points forever and it is entirely possible that they will lose points if they aren't improving as much as the masses. Losing points is pretty discouraging to most people and the bonus points makes people feel like they're improving even though they're not. Also as someone pointed out, you get 11 bonus points per day per league so you have to play a couple of games a day to get rid of it. I can't quote any research sources for this, but I have a theory that a game is much more addicting if they can get you to log in at least once a day and play a little. (IE daily quests/dungeons for WoW, making you check in a dozen times a day for farmville/cafe world/etc).

Ez. Also bonus pool is a good idea as people are more willing to invest time in projects which they think they're progressing with. It may just be perception, but perception is extremely important when it comes to the mind.
