In my previous article about BoxeR overloading websites, many questioned the event described in the post. Some compared the event to Day9's live stream and Huk's Mothership rush views. In order to for people to soak up the full gravity of this event, this "BoxeR Effect”, I found some numbers, stats, and images
First the VOD. GomTV.com alone had VOD View of over 437,533 so far.
The Stream that some did not believe caused GomTV.com to go down… 774,866 people logged in at the same time to watch the Live stream. Here is the proof.
Day9 certain does not have 774,866 people watching his live stream.
GomTV even had to publically apologize in order to subside viewers anger. That’s how big this event was. It was not the size of day9’s daily or small MLG live stream size. This was huge. P.S. Yea, I was looking at the english VODs and I was like, whoamg, Boxer's games have already 50k+ views. And then I looked at the Korean site and well, its ridiculous.
It really is amazing to me how much weight his name carries even now and just how huge his legacy is. I think ever since SC2's announcement people were clamoring for Boxer's grand return, but now three years after the fact he's still generating interest like nobody I've ever seen.

IIRC, during the second minicast, incontrol mentioned 30k stream viewers when he was talking about selects interview.

Blizzard has more/better servers than GOMTv has. Blizzard supports WoW, so I'm sure they are ready.
On a side note, does anyone have the interview of Boxer after he won his match in the GSL? The interview Artosis gives to the winner of the match-up. I would really like to see this one, I kinda fell asleep, as it was 9 AM Eastern Time and I had been up all night waiting to watch the Opening games.

Note that, there is one Korean TV station also has this on 2 hour delay. Chinese website also has some restream with its Chinese commentary plus all the English restream. I can be safe to say that, last night there are about 1.2~1.5 million people tuned in to watch Boxer play. No one has this effect in any games, only the Emperor can do this and SC/SC2 is the king of Esport

Not only is he facing FruitDealer this weekend at Blizzcon, FruitDealer is in his same bracket at GSL 2. Then again if it does get to that point I think it might be a win-win situation, it'd be SC2's first hero vs the BW legend.

while blizzard MIGHT have the capacity to support this many viewers. I am quite certain they will underestimate the amount of koreans watching by a good few 100k, I wouldn't have believed that boxer was THIS big in korea still, there are only about 50 million inhabitaants, so about 2% of the population was watching boxer's first major sc2 tournament.
holy mother of god that is a lot of viewers. I never played sc1 so I'm not a big fanboy of boxer, but damn i love him just for the ammount of publicity he is bringing to sc2.
seriously, boxernim is a pimp. dating a milf and pulling the strings of 774,866+ people...with a game. will he be remembered 100 years later, as the godfather of esports?
lets see what nada brings on the last day of ro64.
I'm thankful that Boxer is playing SC2 and from the looks of it, in good form. I don't think he'll make it past th ro4 in GSL because there's too many good players, but there's a good chance he vs. Nada in the ro8. That matchup would be epic. Seems like it's both of their best matchups TvT.
Props to Blizzard for recognizing his popularity and putting him in the show. I think it will not only sell more virtual tickets, but there is that possibility of overloading during his match.

Or they can do everything in their power to make sure that Boxer get far in this tourney :D
The temptation to fix games must be awfully strong. I have no idea of they would and I'm not implying they are likely to. However, if him winning makes the difference of about 500k viewers then the gomtv execs must be sweating when he plays.
You know i wasnt around during that whole sc1 craze but im always one for loving heroes and comebacks. And i sincerely hope this guy wins the tournament despite the fact that im a zerg player and almost never root for non zergers. I mean, i couldnt tell if his play today was INSANE,ok,mediocre or bad. I couldnt.just as the Artosis and Tasteless were, i too was nervous and sweating and couldnt think straight. Anyway, cheers to the Emperor
It was a great game by Boxer he just totally dominated. I hope he goes far and SC2 Will become MORE AND MORE popular But our TL Players are going to have lots more hard time trying to get in. I hope if it gets big enough to have a team league that would be awesome seeing TLO playing team Prime and he all-kills them (: EPIC!

Actually, this might be a good thing for the guy - now he'll always be remembered as the first person Boxer faced in his first ever professional SC2 game when he made his comeback. People are probably not going to remember all the random people Boxer beats later on in tournaments (and even in the rest of this GSL, unless he does amazingly well and knocks out Nada or something), but the very first guy? He's probably going to end up being mentioned somewhere on Boxer's liquipedia page in 2020.
its hard to explain magnitude of this to non sc gamers... all my friends are playing halo, and console games, they dont see how epic sc2 is going to be.

I'm glad that many of the old legends made their return, they add credibility to the fact that SC2 really is a good esports-game which mustn't be afraid of the comparison to its elder brother. Now I only wish Zerg and Protoss would compare to the awe-inspiring joy I get by watching top Terran players harassing multiple places simultaneously while microing their main army at the same time (not crying "imba", just stating my opinion of viewer-friendliness). Meh, at least they got Banelings and Blink Stalkers

True that. I think Boxer's "fanboys" are the most mature type of fanboys. (won't be true for too long though as he is going to attract new SC2 fans soon)
Yes Boxer going far is what will make sc2 big. GomTV made the brackets easy for Boxer and who blames them. I'd do it to for the sake of my own and also for the sake of E-Sports. With Boxer going international the international scene is going to be even bigger than ever.

It's because Boxer's playstyle appeals to so many people. He did use simple units to it's fullest. Medic/marines, dropship/marines for example. His micro was, and is still, extraordinary. He also came up with very neat tricks and had an amazing abilty to adapt. The true PIMP of SC/BW. You must understand his impact on the game, and gaming in general. Can someone explain to me or give me a link to something detailing exactly what it is about Boxer that makes him so famous? I mean I've certainly heard his name a lot but as a pretty casual player I'm not familiar with why his name seems to stand above everyone else. Not just by a little bit too, seems like he is spoken of as someone who just utterly dominated, a Michael Jordan type for lack of a better analogy.

Without BoxeR, there is no E-sports. If he didn't win those world championships or dominate the scene for so long to capture the attention of millions, competitive gaming would be no where near as big. Korea wouldn't have taken pro gamers seriously (if they lost to foreigners who didn't train as hard). It would still be viewed as a fun pasttime w/ no career possibilities. So to the newbies: You're able to follow GSL and pro leagues because BoxeR built this shit. He should be paid a 5% comission from all proceeds, honestly.

Boxer made me love Terran, and see Terran with a fresh pair of eyes. Micro became so much more with him. I will never forget a game with him againt a zerg on LT. The zerg had everything except 6 o'clock and natural..boxer just flew around with a dropship filled wit a couple of medics, firebats, and marines. He eventually won the game..i mean he performed miracles daily.
For the betterment and progression of the SC2 scene, they should just all forfeit to BoxeR in the GSL2! Lol I'm kidding but that would be pretty funny considering how huge of a following this man-beast of legend has.
According to HD / Husky, Slayer.Boxer is ManOfOneWay, but when I looked at the charts for the GSL 2, there's another guy named BoXer on the list as well.
I'm guessing ManOfOneWay is Slayer.Boxer while BoXer is another guy with the name.

Large monetary awards often kills creativity...
True to an extent. You're also more likely to try to analyze your opponents play and come up with new strategies and tactics to counter your opponents' plays if they all go standard/nothing new. Assuming they go standard, you can keep tweaking around with timings, etc.
Although I'd def say nonetheless your statement holds a lot of validity.

Correct. BoxeR in GSL isn't SlayerSBoxeR. (SlayerSBoxeR is)! SlayerSBoxeR had some great matches!
This is so amazing. So much viewers (actually maybe more viewers as we can imagine more than 1 person being in front of the cpu). Some TV channels would actually dream of having so much viewers for 1 program.

To date, Boxer is the only gamer who is a household celebrity name outside of the gaming community.

Did he just crush everyone?
Lots of reasons. He's not exactly the most dominant. NaDa, for example, has won more starleagues than Boxer has and a few other people have won just as many as he has. It was when he became dominant that sets him apart.
Back then, Korean e-sports wasn't that far ahead compared to NA/EU, even for BW. Boxer's dominance, coupled with his flair and charisma, moved Korean e-sports to the mainstream while e-sports in general is still a fringe event in the rest of the world. He's essentially the father of e-sports.
Terran was considered the weakest race back then. Boxer's innovations made it the strongest race and even now, Terran players have won the most starleagues. That's with 0 balance patches whatsoever. He just revolutionized the race that much. His style of play is more exciting as well. He's very good at coming up with unique build orders and thinking fast in the heat of the moment. The team he started, SK Telecom, has the most awards as well, even though he hasn't played at a high level in a long time in BW.
Add exciting play to period of dominance, charisma, media-friendly image, media savvy and dating a famous Korean actress and that's Boxer.
Do you guys think its worth trying to stay up to watch it? I'd love to, but I hate the possibility that the stream would just crash or be unwatchable from lag. I'd be losing a lot of sleep for my next day, so I'd only do it if I knew it would be functional.

That's the same dilemma I'm having. What's worse is that, since I don't have a subscription, staying up to watch would be the only way to see the games without them being spoiled. And if the stream crashes at all, that would just be horrible.
Boxer showed them that he CAN crash streams. They KNOW NaDa is ALSO big. They WILL have had a few days to arrange servers by the time the match happens.
I think it will be fine. It was the Korean stream that crashed last time right? The foreign stream is mostly safe because no matter who is playing, it's still happening in Korean time, which is a major inconvenience for most people who would watch the foreign stream to begin with.

Uh, what do you mean by arrange servers? Servers aren't a pack of legos that you rearrange depending on the amount of traffic you'll be getting. It costs money to have better infrastructure.

I'm curious as to why companies rarely release these numbers. If the numbers are low it all makes sense but they obviously are not... And releasing them, apart from satisfying our curiosity, would generate more buzz around the event.
The other view counts are pretty ridilculous as well. the ZvZ between Zenio and zergbong got 60k + views, The IntoTheRainbow NEXGenius match got 300k+ views, and the Fake Boxer vs. Kyrix match got over 500k views. If anyone thought SC2 wasn't successful in Korea, these numbers certainly prove them wrong.
People were talking about SC2 not being successful in Korea before GSL2. Check out the vods from GSL1's grand final and you'll see so many empty seats... It's a different story now but it's hard to say whether SC2 is being successful or it's just Boxer's popularity. Whether it's just hype because of his celebrity status or Koreans finding SC2 entertaining enough is too soon to tell - we'll have to wait for season 3 and beyond that to see.

Alot of the SC2 players were not around during the Boxer dominance-era. They probably knew who he is, but did not see him at the height of his dominance with his crazy dropship play. A lot of people would've been directed to the FakeBoxer matches because it was that good.
FoxeR is huge among foreign fans because he responded to them (he changed his name to FoxeR!), and actually mentioned them during an interview, which almost no other pros do - in fact, I don't believe i've EVER seen a korean pro mention foreign fans. I hope FoxeR actually wins the tournament.

Not at all.
- TvT is a much more boring matchup to watch than TvZ. - Foxer and Kyrix both have extremely crazy (and fun to watch) styles and were underdogs going in. - The Foxer vs Kyrix games were actually better to watch (game 1 of Boxer vs Nada were great but the others weren't anything too crazy).
Now obviously the Koreans were watching for the players. The western stream apparently has less sc1 knowledge and prefers to watch the highly entertaining (if not quite as good per say) players and matchups rather than follow the legends of old.
Edit: As was mentioned above Foxer also set himself up to be popular with foreign fans. I actually was more excited at seeing the Foxer game than the Boxer game, mostly because a fast paced TvZ beats out a TvT any day.

I'm not saying it's unreasonable, I just want it to be cheaper so GSL could be even more accessible to more people (which in turn will benefit GSL back, and benefit eSport development as a whole). Anyway let's not derail into that dangerous topic

Nope! Foreigners love the underdog story, which Kyrix and FoxeR both are. Also, TvT is...kinda boring xP TvZ on the other hand is exciting if not only because there's been so much controversy over that matchup due to "imba!" talks about it. A lot of SC2 players probably haven't really heard of both BoxeR and NaDa as sad as that may seem :[.
Also, I personally think the Kyrix v. FoxeR series was a better series to watch than BoxeR v. NaDa... :\
to me the number just look fantastic either way. more people would have been watching the live stream for nada v boxer, so less vod numbers. and you gotta admit the game 5 foxer won was unbelievable.
these numbers are simply telling us that sc2 is really taking off now. gotta be happy with that :D

and for the foreigner site:
Kyrix vs BoxeR: 136,590 HopeTorture vs Genius: 75,297 Zenio vs NesTea: 45,812 SlayerSBoxer vs NaDa: 86,523
Korea (south) population (2008): 48,607,000 World population (2008): 6,697,254,041
1.08% of Korea watched Kyrix vs BoxeR 2.79% of Korea watched SlayerSBoxer vs NaDa
0.002% of the rest of the world watched Kyrix vs BoxeR 0,0012 of the rest of the world watched SlayerSBoxer vs NaDa
It's quite astounding to see how popular SC2 is in Korea and compared to that, what a small percentage of the world watched these games
Interestingly enough, only about 1.5% of the world has internet access capable of watching a live stream. That brings the number to about ~ 1.45m/(6700m*0.015) = 1.5% of the internet capable world watched the game. Pretty fucking impressive
I personally find it the most exciting and intense match up among all. One tiny mistake and your ball got raped by siege tank's fire. One good timing and you're on the high ground bombarding your opponent's troops.
I think blizzard should sponsor him . (there was another thread about boxer getting his own sponsor). this guy is bigger than any other advertisement for sc2.
World population (2008): 6,697,254,041 0,0012 of the rest of the world watched SlayerSBoxer vs NaDa
There is already someone mentionning :

But I'd like to add the GSL is a korean base tournament, in korea, mainly cast by korean commentators, and the only other official stream is in english. The "world" as you mention is less likely to watch a stream if this is not in your mothertongue. That's a fact. The "world" which does speak english fluently is smaller than 6B people. I might be wrong though... ^^
There is also the fact that multiple people can watch it from the same connection. Sometimes thousands of them through ustream and similar re-streams. Sometimes just 2 or 3 on the same screen/TV.
Is that all games combined or average per game or what?
I mean if its all games combined that is like 425000 people, its a lot of people but considering someone like husky gets up to about 300000 in some video's (more often 150k) it doesn't seem that big.

Someone already mentioned it but I believe that's the amount of unique logged in users that watched the games or something along the line. Very impressive nonetheless.
Edit: Oh and its all games combined of that series.
Edit2:
And Those Husky videos probably aren't viewed that much in 1 day but over a lengthy timespan. This was uploaded yesterday and hasn't even been 24 hours since upload.

Well huskies videos are free so if you want to watch 2 different games you need to pay. There is a big difference. Also, you need to sign up to watch any games at all.

True and I guess husky gets a lot of views from the more casual gamers, The gsl just isn't as accessible as youtube, particularly to foreigners. You have to go looking for it instead of like with youtube where everything kind of finds you.
A better comparison would be to the BW scene and how many views it gets.
Still a very large number of people though. Tbh I can only see these numbers going up as starcraft 2 matures.

Yea you are right. Casual new gamers don't know the BW history or atleast the big names. Everyone who does or were referenced by those people watched the games or vods since yesterday. The farther Boxer gets is the more Korean viewers will watch Boxer's games which is better for E-Sports. And that GSL1 Finals stadium won't be enough for Boxer. I'm thinking like OSL or PL finals for Boxer alone ><

The last 4 remaining in GSL are all ex-sc1 pros. BoxeR, ZergBong, IntoTheRainbow and FakeBoxer (i forgot his old nick sry). add NaDa, Cool, sSKS (Tester), .....

It's separate There were 2 screenshots or statistics mentioned in a previous page I believe. Total amount of viewers is about 2 million viewers (Korea and foreign scene). Very very sick but expected nonetheless
Edit:
Make it close to 1.9m but let's just round it off to 2million
I find it interesting that foxer vs kyrix and foxer vs hopetorture are now the top 2 most viewed on the english site, followed by 3 real boxer games (boxer vs nada first among them).

Its understandable. His marine style was so unexpected, everyone probably told people they HAD to see it for themselves. Also every terran player, and people making highlight vids probably dissecting those vods in slow mo -- dat marine spread...

yeah, I'm sure it has nothing to do with the fact that HIS NICKNAME IS FUCKING B O X E R !! rofl
If Foxer's nick was still Clare like in SC1, his view count would be very very average imo.
