I'd imagine planning and doing the dailies takes hours from his day, and he does so much else too. Just not enough time to refine your play to GM level.

Stop thinking like an SC2 pro, and think like a normal person. Valve's one million dollar tournament pre-release of the game is a BRILLIANT idea, and it's going to take DotA 2 farther than it was already destined to go. There are many reasons why they chose to do it: 1) The dollars involved let them flaunt their giant brass balls, basically raising a middle finger to competitors like LoL and HoN 2) The regular Joe Schmoe like me doesn't have a chance in hell to do well in a tournament like this. When I hear about a million dollar tournament, I don't think "Hey, I'll get four of my friends and we'll get first place and we'll win the prize!" We wouldn't have a chance in hell. Instead I think "Woah, the first place team gets a million dollars? That's awesome for them... it would be so cool to be on a DotA team" 3) Artosis you asked why won't they do the tournament a few months after the release of the game. Simple: excitement for most games peak BEFORE release, not after. A huge tournament six months after DotA 2 comes out is not going to rope in new players. The trick is to rope in as many players right now, and more players will buy the game later on down the line. 4) This is the first time we'll get to see the game! I've been waiting and waiting to see what the game looks like, ever since that DotA 2 blog came out, but I haven't got to see anything except that awesome Bloodseeker artwork and the two screenshots that came out literally yesterday and the teaser trailer that came out today. On the seventeenth, we won't just get to see some screenshots. We won't just get to see a gameplay video. We'll get to see a bloody tournament with the best teams from around the world! 5) I've never seen a professional DotA game ever. This will be the first time I watch MOBA casted. This will probably be the first time watching any form of eSports for some gamers - anybody who like me wants to see what DotA 2 is like for the first time, but unlike me has happened to have never watched SC2 or any other eSports. What does this mean? Valve is expanding eSports!

The teams participating got an advance copy of the game so they can learn the mechanics/practice/etc. If they made the tournament open, they'd either have to give out a free copy of the game to anyone who wanted it (lol), or not distribute the game at all prior to the tournament, which would result in people with no idea what to do derping around haphazardly for a chance at $1m.
