A couple of years ago, it was pretty well known how to qualify for blizzcon (you have to have a certain ladder rank) in WC3. This led to blatant abuse by some of the players (giving freewins to teammates to help them reach their ladder goal). For this reason, I think blizzard won't make it known how they do it and also make it appear a little random (so that people don't figure it out/try to cheat the system). Anyways, I don't know if that is the reason for sure... but I suspect it is. To use some law school admissions forum parlance, this is the credited response. Blizzard wants to encourage people to play on their ladder. Having progamers play on it encourages others to play as well. So, Blizzard chooses to ladder as the de facto qualifiers for the Blizzard Invitationals. However, they can't disclose exactly what a player has to do to be invited, because if they did, they encourage abuse. As you mentioned, freewins, stream cheating, and other exploits would be utilized to get the required spot.

It's probably just some guys at Blizzard that get together and choose their favorite players (kinda how they just chose people for NASL). If you worked at Blizzard isn't that what you would do?

Probably the worst parts of the show is when JP runs a questionnaire about "last night's GSL games" or predictions about how a tournament group will go. The most awesome shows are almost always the post-LAN ones.
