Hi, I'm Rizaz or lolGORGEous from DOW2. I've been playing zerg since there was zerg to play. When I watch the top zergs play, I notice they never utilize the mutalisk's moving shot. In fact, I never see anyone using the moving shot. I showed the trick to a few of my zerg friends, and none of them knew about it. So here I am, showing the masses this helpful mutalisk micro.

HOW: Quite simple. move > stop > move > stop > move. Many players use this for other units, like banshees. It is quite simple and you'll be able to do it after just a minute or two of practice.

I find that the mutaliskss seem to glide/shoot seamlessly when they don't have to turn. When the mutalisks have to turn 180 degrees then they start to decelerate regardless of your micro.

This first video shows the basics of mutalisk's moving shot micro.

The second video shows my moving shot micro in an actual game.

The moving shot is incredible effective at chasing down units that are slightly faster or slower than the mutalisk. I have used it countless times to punish my opponent in mutalisk duels. Many times you can wipe out 2-3 extra mutalisks. It also increases the effectiveness of worker harass as you can run away from the marines while still destroying scvs. Or when they run the workers, moving shot is much more effective than having to catch up every 2 seconds.

[edit]

It's not the exact copy of SC1 moving shot, but it is missing from many zerg user's playbook. It is simple stop micro, but when firing forward the mutalisks can shoot without decelerating. My micro in those videos wasn't flawless. They were a simple demonstration. Try it out. You'll find it useful in games, if you're not already using it.
Zerg fighting.

Huh. You know what, you're right. I'm not sure people have used that as much as they should. I didn't even know it existed.

I've tried to do crazy muta micro via attack-moving, moving, attack-moving, moving, but I always thought it seemed a little on the slow side.

Still not going to be as effective as in Brood War, considering they can't stack very well. But cool nonetheless.

In fact, I never see anyone using the moving shot.

because this is not moving shot and sc2 mutalisks don't have moving shot.
what you do is stop shot which is the same thing as stimmed marauders stop shot.

moving shot is that units send their projectiles while moving...

what you show here is just stop shot and its useless against marine-medievac balls, since your mutalisks have to stop to send their projectile.

this is NOT moving shot.

for further details, you can read lalush's thread here:

because they have to stop when they attack(much like most or all air units but phoenix /vr?) micro like in SC1 isnt possible where you could attack and move without decelerating

Though this is quite a neat trick, i do this without thinking most of the time though lol

It's not the same thing, and will not be used in the same way as in BW (I can certainly see mutas dying to a bio ball if they try to do what they did in BW versus MM), but it definately still seems useful.

the biggest difference between this and SC1 moving shot is that you can only do it while moving straight.

it's a good chasing technique, but other than that, you can't really pick off anything

they are still losing way too much speed. this does look a bit better than i thought was possible but it's not even close to as useful as a moving shot was in BW.
mutas are supposed to be way faster than void rays and workers but you were barely keeping up. true moving shot involves zero deceleration and is most useful when you can turn 180 degrees after shooting without losing speed, which isnt possible thanks to blizzard's failure to make units' effectiveness proportional to skill speed and timing, while having an online platform with built in latency and no means to provide players with LAN latency or anything near LAN latency. so even if cool micro tricks are possible they are always going to look sloppy with bnet's retarded built in lag.

I didnt see the videos yet since im on my iphone. But although the moving shot isnt the same as in SC1 BW i definetely have my own SCII version of it that will most probably be the one that u are showing off in your vids. Im a high diamond Z and once i master my apm as Z ill try to show how I use mine and have a pretty decent win rate with it against T (70% or so). Imo Z is def one of the underestimated races but I think thats mostly because the skillcap is so high that noone can utilize tricks like this to 100% including their macro and other army usage. But thats one of the things that keeps me so interested in playing Z ^^. (e.g. I play 40apm in start of game and end in 100apm average without unnecesary clicks and still feel i lack atleast 20apm for better creep controll and still dont have enough time to micro units 100% as i want w/o suffering in my macro)

There are some shots in the video where he pulls it off without pretty much ANY decceleration.

Hmmm.

I find that this works better for me using hold position than stop. Might just be after a few minutes of practicing both, that I notice some difference, but maybe somebody else can confirm?

The stop position micro seems to be the same result as in the videos in OP.

With hold position it seems like I can get a LOT closer to true moving shot.

(Sorry, no videos right now, my internet connection where I am currently is ridiculously slow.)

This is badass and as a not-zerg player makes me excited that I will have to use phoenixes rather than stalkers to counter mutalisks soon :D

is this faster than move a-move move, a-move? because from the video it seems like the mutas that are lagging a little behind aren't doing anything, whereas with a-move they would try to catch up while the others are firing.

You can do this with A-move. It's not true moving shot. I've been doing it since day 1 of the beta.

It's not. You can use a-move, patrol, hold position, or stop. The thing you don't see most players doing is the move immediately after the shot (realistically before the shot because of latency) so the mutalisks don't slow down. If done properly, the mutalisks can move and shoot without decelerating.

You can also use attack hold and patrol to do the same thing. This isn't Muta micro either.

this is more of "common sense" while playing zerg, if you are a decent player.

This isn't quite a moving shot, it's actually just a glide shot, but it's still quite effective and I think the OP made a good post and good example videos. +1 to him. I don't see zerg players use it very often myself, although it is quite an obvious technique.

Now people will complain that Mutas are over powered.

This kind of thing goes through phases.

At first everyone thought Siege Tanks sucked, look at it now.

Cool trick nevertheless, however the lag will make it very hard to do.

I hope more useful tricks are discovered like this one.

Yes, but they actually changed the siege tank, and then people changed their minds. Mutas haven't changed since the beginning. I doubt any tricks will come out that change the role of mutas.

I see this used all the time -- even did it when I offraced. It's not moving shot, though, and only works against units much slower than the muta.
