Nobody cares if you win or lose, you are nobody.

Repeat that to yourself 10000 times.

Then click find game.

If I were scared to play I would do the following:
Pick random, limit myself to cheese strats, like stupid ones too.

Proxy hatch -> spine crawlers
Cannon rush
6 rax marine/SCV rush

You will win some games and lose some games, but must of all you will have fun and realize that the wins/losses don't matter.

SC is all about having fun and getting better. Wins and losses should be a by-product.

Also, JUST GO PLAY. Just say "fuck it".

Lose on purpose. Do something completely stupid. Just bunker rush, or proxy pylon, or offensive hatchery for 3 games.

Get that fear of losing out of the way. Even though you're confident, and you don't get angry at a loss, if you KNEW you were going to win, you would obviously be playing.

Go lose a few on purpose, without just suiciding 6 workers right off the bat. So just go do some stupid strats, get those jitters out of the way, then when you're sick of losing, go win!!!

InfiniteIce pretty much nailed it, you just need to have that "i don't give a shit"-attitude and just
fuck around once in a while to lighten up and just realize that it doesn't matter if you lose.

You might think that you have read up a lot on build orders, counters etc. and think that you can execute them perfectly and thus see it as a failure if you were to lose when you for the first time play another opponent, it will happen but it won't matter.

Just play!
We make signature, then defense it.

I think that this kind of issue happens often to very polite, good mannered people, that just care about their presentation.. But seriously, this is SC2, as long as you wont be plaing on stage in front of 2000 people, no one cares..

Solution is very easy, as many suggested, just go and click that freaking button, dont even think about it..

For me, it was pretty stressful until I had solid build order, that I could execute properly, than it becomes much easier..

SC2 is such a complex game to a new player trying to improve. I'm pretty sure there are thousands of people in this same exact predicament.

The player wants to improve, but he doesn't where to start, so he just ends up not playing at all because he's already mentally burnt out thinking about it.

Lee Jae Dong proved that a focus on mechanics and execution could solve problems in the StarCraft game strategy.

Hey everyone, I don't know if you guys can help or give some words of advice/encouragement, but I've been following Team Liquid for a while now and have been in the beta and now own the game. But I'm so frustratingly afraid to press the Find Game button. I'm pretty confident in my ability to play, I'd guess I'm at low Platinum level, pretty decently. I want to become better, but for some reason, I can't sit down and play. Does it get easier? Am i just crazy? I want to improve, but it just seems so terrifying. I don't get angry when I lose, and am a pretty well mannered player, so I just don't get it. Can someone tell me how to get myself to just play the game?-_- Thanks.

just play more custom games, I used to get worried about it. I started doing good and stopped careing.

An answer that departs from the "just play, dude" answer:

Play 2v2/3v3. Its much easier (at least for me) to lose a game in 2v2/3v3 and be like "oh well I should have done that lets play again) - and you can still focus on practicing certain things, like macro/micro or smoothing out build orders etc.

And the avatars are cooler from team games.

This. I never go straight into 1v1s when I open SC2. I always have at least one game on Arakan Citadel (the main 3v3 map) to make sure I'm not playing terribly, and then go ladder. Just play anything where you feel there isn't something at stake, really.

Also, doing stupid builds a bunch helps. I know that I used to be afraid of playing because, for some reason, I'd be embarrassed if I lost. If you can start to look at your losses and lol, then you're heading in the right direction.

CAN!

don't worry about winning unless your really want to win. in that case accept defeat as a minor set back on your journey to winning.

cough* cough* pussy.... nah but seriously just say fuck it, so what if you lose it's not like anyone is going to check your match history and yell at you for losing. don't be scared to lose, it's the only way to get better!

I took this approach and finally did my 1v1 placement matches. I went 2 and 3. Now I'm in Bronze.

Also Cthulhu bit off my dick.

I had this exact problem. If i'm a bit nervous to go and play ladder i just watch Koreans play BW and that pumps me up to play my best for some reason.

Follow BoxeR's advice. its my quote. ill post it in an edit cause i cant type the Korean =P

Here it is:
"지고나서 후회하지 말자" - 임요환
"Don't regret after losing" Lim Yo-Hwan

It is what i think of after a 7 loss streak, i think of it and get inspiration. and then i play, and win or lose, i dont really care as much now. and i play UMS occasionally too though.

Sometimes I force action in my life regardless of the outcome. This comes from a deeply depressed and inactive person mind you. If you feel in a state of inaction, remember "just do it" "don't think about it". It might become an instinct eventually and you'll stop being sheepish of playing the game.
If you still find it fun and want to play deep down at least.

I usually try to click cancel when I feel it's searching for a player for too long. Right when I click it, it says player found. Wait what. Just play and have fun. Doesn't matter if you win or lose.

Drink 1-2 beers before playing Not only will you no longer be afraid of starting a game, but you won't get all nervous/shaky
