A little about me... + Show Spoiler +While I don't intend to tell my life story here, I do want to include a little background about my podcasting history. I've run a WoW PvP podcast (oh no, my secrets out!) for two years coming up this June. ArenaCast did quite well for itself, building a community and peaking at around 12,000 weekly downloads on shows. As of late, my interest in the game has slowed down, and I've stopped doing it as my co-hosts bowed out one-by-one. Podcast Info I've decided to go ahead and do a podcast -- maybe weekly, maybe bi-weekly, or this may be the first and last episode -- for SC2. Right now its a developing project, so I'm just winging it and naming it State of the Game SC2 Beta Podcast. Keep in mind that I'm still working on molding the show. I'm more of a dive-right-in, fix-it-later type guy so that's what I plan on doing!
SotG 6.24.10 + Show Spoiler +Oh hello! Remember the good ol' State of the Game podcast? It wasn't that long ago that I posted a show I hope! People still remember the name... right? Well, in case you have no idea who the hell I am please read below. If you do, then hello again! Quite a roster! Feel free to direct questions at any one of the guests specifically or at the group. Please tag all questions with a bolded @Question! Thanks! We're going to be talking about the last two patches we didn't talk about before the beta ended, what the hell a nerd is supposed to do without SC2 beta, and some other topics I'll save for the show! Thanks everyone! P.S. - I might broadcast this live (or convince Sean to do it) over UStream.TV, but I'll confirm / deny this before we record Wednesday night. SotG 5.20.10 + Show Spoiler +Episode 5: a bittersweet semi-end to what has now grown into a great podcast to be a part of -- something the community now 'owns'. It's been a weird and wild ride but I'm closing up shop for a couple of weeks as I have travel to California and then to Ohio for the start of the MLG PC Circuit. This weeks podcast I think is the finest yet. It was definitely crazy and if you don't find yourself cracking a smile at least once I seriously question your sense of humor. Patch notes + a look back at the beta from all aspects are the topics. Also, forgive me for being insanely tired and forgetting which match-ups were discussed later on. Also, if any Blizzard employees listen to this podcast, please do NOT take any of the suggestions from this cast. Except for the Ultralisk with cannons on its side. Do that. Cool, new podcast :D Alright, let's give this a shot.
@Question -- What effect is the ultra change going to have? It seems kind of insignificant :S Also, do you think the infested terran reversion is okay where it is now, or does the spell (or its caster) need some more changes?
@TLO -- When can we expect to see a grudge match between you and artosis? :D
|
sweet
@Question What do you feel about the removal of statis field, dark swarm and the lack in general of AoE spells in SC2. Do you feel that the skill cap in the game is high enough to be played truly competitively.
|
@Question What spell would you like to see the overseer get (old or new) now that it no longer has infested terran?
|
@Question for Tasteless -Will you be casting the Day[9] SC2 release from Korea or will you be coming back to the States?
@Question -What is the biggest hurdle currently to incorporating FE's into top-tier Terran's play in the various match-ups? Why is aggressively FEing not seen as often (yes the Morrow build, but not much else), despite 'free' bunkers, and the nice defender's advantage of Tanks?
|
(Love all the work you do, JP, just to say)
Perhaps a question more for Tasteless, as he's more involved with the Korean scene.
It might just be because I don't see as much of it, but one thing I've noticed is that the west seems to have jumped onto Starcraft 2 with both hands. Groups like MLG seem to be eagerly awaiting its release to bring it on board and the popularity of it is really thrilling.
In the East, they seem much more cautious. There seems to be less SC2-related stuff going on that we can see, as opposed to the huge amount of European and American tournaments.
@Question - Do you think we'll see an East/West divide emerge where the East stays with Brood War and the West moves to Starcraft 2? Or is the East just moving more cautiously as it has so much history with Brood War. Or do I just have this totally wrong :D
I for one would love to see a worldwide scene, the EU vs US rivalry is something really exciting, and the EU vs Asia showmatches showed that although Asia still seems to be on top, there's an enjoyable contest to be made of it.
|
Now this is the announcement I've been waiting for! Great choices for guests, can't wait to download, thanks JP!
@Question As we can see they still have not removed the Infested Terran from the game, and have in fact brought it back to the Infestor. Do you think this switch back will effect how it is used, or will it continue to be minimally used? Any other thoughts on the spell, aka tossing it, improvements, etc would be appreciated. Thanks guys!

Is there a way to watch this live?

|
@Question With the difference in styles between Asia (heavy aggression), Europe (Solid Compositions and Build orders), and the US (Macro and econ play), which do you see rising to be the most dominant, and what combinations of styles do you feel is more potent?
|
@Question Do you feel like the ideal way to allow zerg to handle mech is to simply to make roaches cost 150/50, be 3 supply, and spawn two at a time?
|
These are all two pronged questions. These are all related so please ask all of them or none! :D These are all related to the recent patch.
my name is pronounced faze. Like Phaser without the R at the end (Its not FAZEEE)
@Question What does TLO,and Tasteless (The players who play zerg albeit randomly) think about the recent ultralisk buff, and do they think this will change the ZvT dynamic much? With their experiences with Ultralisks do they feel this buff was necessary, or just another gimmick and why do you guys feel this way? @Question in comparison would an Ultralisk range addition or other suitable buff that would increase the chance of the ultralisk getting into melee range be more effective in promoting the ultralisk to do damage? and are there any specific changes you could think of that would accomplish this feat better than the stun resistance buff? @Question Continuing on my Ultralisk questions, What do you feel the Ultralisk is being designed to accomplish in Starcraft 2, and what are your thoughts on how blizzards plans for the ultralisk will affect the game in the near future?
and randomly, a bad question, you can skip this last one below if you like ^^;
@Question And also, WHENS THE BETA COMING UP, Does any of the guests on the show have any insider information?
I Love SOTG, Keep on doing it!
|
@Question Do you think the rally point change will have a negative effect on the lower level players. While I love the change, I can't help but think lower level players, a part of the player base that Blizzard is paying specific attention to, will be hurt by this.
@Question Warp Prisms - They're obviously fucking awesome. So why aren't we seeing more players use them? Things like drops could really help the Protoss play not to mention the added mobility it could bring too an army or defense when in the non-transport mode. Why aren't we seeing more awesome Warp Prism play?
|
@Question @Tasteless: During a GOM broadcast you talked about trying to get a 6-pack. Did it work out? Any tips?
|
I really enjoy the podcasts, thanks for the effort. I like how every time there is a slightly different line up. Keep them coming!
|
@Question - There haven't been much high level play around defensive burrowed banelings, Do you think using banelings defensively, somewhat like how spider mines were in starcraft1 will play a big roll in sc2 in the future? What are your views on it? (TLO/Tasteless)
|

@Question: 3 months ago hyper aggressive play usually fueled off of one base was terrorizing the scene, and a new high ground mechanic was being accused of breaking the game. As Beta went down the community was questioning if the defensive strength of tanks was insurmountable, and a protoss who didn't early expand to match the zerg opponent was dead in the water. Has the strategy of SC2 Beta evolved faster or slower than you expected at the top level as well as the general community?
|
Also just saying it's a kickass lineup (though, adding a 'toss special guest might be nice!)
|
Tastless with no Day??? Noooooooooooooo!
@Question - Map balance seems to be one of the main factors holding the game back. Do you feel the matchups are solid enough to begin focusing on map balance?
@Question - Have any of you tried the 3v3 or 4v4 playlists? I personally found it useful in improving my apm because there is so much happening. Do you feel any of the team playlists could ever appear in tournaments? Is there anything that could be done to help it, or is it impossible to balance?
Spain vs Germany results question to TLO: + Show Spoiler +@Question @TLO Are you sad that Germany was knocked out?
|
@Question :
When is the Infested Terran going to die already? Seriously.
|
@Question
I have a several pronged question about Void Rays:
I'm wondering how everyone feels about the future of the Void Ray.
1. Will we see top players utilize much better control in regards to the two key tricks (*) that the unit possesses? 2. Will we see more builds in the early-mid game utilizing Void Ray's speed ridiculous power? 3. Do Void Rays have the potential to be microed in such a fearsome way as seen by Mutalisks in BW?
*(I am of course talking about 1. "Maintaining Void Ray Charge Micro" and 2. "Fazing" (Recently discovered in the Void Ray tricks thread, involves quickly splitting the L1 Beam damage over multiple units by right clicking)
Also would like to add a shoutout to Tasteless for being a badass baller. DO IT JP!
|
What loss have you been the most angry about? what did you do about it?
|
@Question - What do each of you think are the most underused/ undervalued abilities or units in the game and what strategies, if any, are you looking into to make those units / abilities more viable in your own game play?
|
@Question - Frenzy has been removed in favor of giving the Ultra passive immunity to Stun/Mind control, but what about the Corruptors ability? Its basically the same thing in reverse, has a large energy requirement, and overall isn't very interesting.
Does the Corruptor need an ability? Is the current corruption good enough if it does? and what might be a feasible replacement if it is not?
@Question - we have seen almost every unit from both Zerg and Terran used in high level games to some degree, even BC's due to their insane AtG damage...but when it comes to Protoss tier 3 it seems that only the Collosus gets used. Carriers and Mothership use is an extreme rarity.
Is this simply due to players not playing around with the units enough, or are these units in need of some adjustement to make using them more worthwhile?
|
@Question Raven - Awesome unit, very diverse, yet under explored. We have all seen the 1/1/1 Raven composition because it is great for stopping early DT + Point Defense Drone for stalkers. However, we rarely see Auto-Turret and even more-so Seeker Missile. Do you think this is an underused ability, do you have any builds that incorporate them or any insight on the abilities?
|
@Question Tournaments - What are top tier players opinions on a more long term tournament such as a ladder league? Perhaps points for wins and each player plays vs each player multiple times throughout the tournament similar to football leagues.
|
@Question
- What are your feelings and thoughts on the Raven ability Seeker Missile?
|
Cool stuff!
@Question - As a Terran, in which matchups, if any, do you see it as 'safe' to do really fast FEs?
|
|
@TLO, are you sad because of Germany vs Spain?
|
@Question While Zerg air is definitely strong, it at times feels stale and all too familiar. In contrast, both Terran and Protoss have very interesting and "cool" new and redesigned air units. Balance aside, do you feel Zerg air is interesting enough going foward?
@Question Blizzard seems to be really stuck on the idea that the Infestor should have three abilities. Assuming Blizzard comes to their senses and finally kills off the infested terran, what third ability would you like to see the infestor get?
|
@Question - Right now the one thing that Blizzard seems to have not addressed adequately with patching are the maps. Do you believe that SC2 has reached a point where the maps can be balanced around the game? -And also- From custom game tournaments we've seen how larger "macro" maps change the style of play considerably. Will a change in maps result in a dramatic change in gameplay?
|
yaaaaay Tasteless and Jinro.^^ @Question: Do you feel like Blizzard are trying to make the game easier by removing choses from it?Before u had to choose to either contaminate a building,drop an IT or drop a changeling and now u have one less choice .Another example is that before u could spend 25 energy to make the ultralisk (or any other unit) immune to stuns, mind control and SNARE and now your ultra is always immune to stuns and mind control (even that it isn't that significant because before no one used the thors ability aganist the ultra and we rarely saw a ZvZ that would even get to Hive tech).10x in advance for answering this question.^^
|
@Question @ Everyone including you JP
What mouse/keyboard set up do you guys have?
@Question @ Jinro
Last month, Jinro made a thread in relations to seeing "Automated Tournaments and the Monetization of Bnet". Does he believe that this idea may still seem plausible in the foreseeable future?

|
@Question
Do you think that the presence of really strong unit synergy (or lack thereof) will limit the diversity of builds and strategies as they mature over time?
|
@Question - Do you think a build revolving around a very fast 2nd Orbital Command in the main taking advantage of the additional mules and scv production will be ever viable ?
|
@Question
Have you guys seen anyone going for a zerg build where they go with 2 or more hatcheries in there natural? This is was very common in BW.
Do you think we will ever see it again in SC2?
|
I'm pretty sure it was you (JP) who was complaining about name pronunciations so...
My Name: Walt
@Question - I've attended the past two MLG events in Columbus and I'm wondering what your thoughts are on the best way for MLG to go about running a SC2 tournament. (assuming they will be) Will it more resemble the WoW setup (invite only, small amount of competitors) or SSB:B (open sign ups, ~200 competitors)?
@Question - Do you think that there will be more Custom Maps or more Blizzard Maps used in the competitive scene a few months after release? How long will it take Custom Maps to be actively used?
|
@Question Referring to the Showmatch of TLO + Jinro versus QXC + Artosis....
- TLO, did you choose to play Protoss because of the strength of Terran FE + Mule with Jinro feeding for a mass warpgate push? Do you believe mineral sharing should be allowed in team play or a cap to the amount of resources that can be sent?
|
whats up with people asking if TLO is happy/sad about ger vs spain.... I'm sure he's fucking ecstatic...
@question Tasteless can you plzzz tell us when something sc2-related will start for gom? any hints?
|
@Question How effective do you think baneling drops as a form of harassment would be against any of the races? zzz bad grammar
|
@Question - Since the general consensus is that getting maxed on 2 base is too easy, and that 2 base is too easy to do. Do you think maps need to have a lower mineral patch/geyser count in the natural(+other expos, not main) to lower income rate in order to encourage expanding?
@Question Do you think zerg needs a positional advantage unit? (like the tank or sentry in sc2, or the tank, reaver, lurker in bw)
|
@Question What are your opinions on the rally point change? Personally, I really got used to the attack-move mechanics, but I figure the change isn't really too significant for those who played BW.

Due to the surplus amount of questions I am going to have to start filtering these things, and possibly just setting up an email and then standardizing everything into one simple SotG post.

I'll 2nd that question with a little twist:
@Question: Please discuss the effect of feeding in 2v2 and whether you feel that 2v2 showmatches have a future in SC2 esports entertainment.

That's a practical way to do it. Just throw up a gmail acct for the questions. Just make sure to separate the emails from each podcast. Don't want to have questions go stale or become irrelevant before you get to them.

God damn you, I thought you released the 7th already. Oh well, guess it will be up very soon then! :D
|
@Question: What is the best way for new players to learn about competitive SC2? Right now it seems like there is an abundance of resources for high level players (ie the people who were still playing BW) but very little info geared towards newcomers.
|
@Question This question is primarily directed at Jinro but the other casters are more than welcome to answer. Will you be continuing to release replay packs once the game goes live or will you be trying to reduce the available exposure to your play style and builds?
|
@Question –– How long do you think it will be until the StarCraft Pro-scene will fully transition from BW to SC2 (if ever)?
|
"Tastless with no Day??? Noooooooooooooo!"
We demand day9 as well! But Tasteless is awesome.
Do you think that eventually BW or otherwise more competitive maps will be used in the automatch rotation as all of us want them to be? Do you believe, like I do, this will be an important step towards taking Blizzard and it's tournaments(Supposing there will be Blizz tournaments like in wc3.) seriously? Are there any known plans for tournaments using the ports we already have you guys heard of?
|
@Question @Random Players - In Broodwar there were certain rush strategies that worked better if you picked random because there were very early defensive decisions that needed to be made in order to defend properly (decisions that you had to make blindly if you didn't know your opponent's race). Due to the slower start up speeds of Starcraft 2 games, do you think random players will have less cheesy options available to them, and will therefore have reduced viability at a high level of play?
@Question - High level Broodwar is heavily effected by many of the "bugs" in the game (such as muta stacking, tricking through mineral lines, map features such as stacked temples). If bugs such as this do not exist in SC2 or are patched when found, will high level play be negatively effected? If a bug certain can only be reproduced with skill, rather than luck, should it be fixed?
|
@Question - How excited are you all with Day9's countdown to SC2 party? This seems like the perfect way to get this game going. Also are all of you going to be attending? As a side note, we all know it was 'Tasteless' idea. Rock on Nick.
|
@Question for everyone
1) What do you think on "cliff abuse" in sc2. Do you think Terran and Protoss have too much possibilities for abusing cliffs? Against zerg, blink stalkers, colossi, storm, reapers, tanks/thor drops etc, are very strong in this matter, do you feel that zerg needs some mechanic incorporated in its arsenal on units to better deal with this, or does it just generate "interesting" play in tvz and pvz? What kind of map features do you hope/think we will see in the future regarding this aspect?
2) Do you think the maps played in BW would translate well into this new game?
|
In case someone hasn't already posted this up here, I will just to be safe.
@Question –– What are your thoughts on the recent realid shenanigans?
|
@Question-TLO, with most zerg players now realizing that creep highways are important for both offense and defense, you still don't see many players actively working to prevent the spread of creep. Do you think the dynamics of zerg play will change if players begin to actively destroy the creep tumors/overlords?
Love the podcast guys, keep up the good work.
|
Hi love your show! @Question The dmg EMP shoots do to protoss is so huge it can clear all energy and shilds instanly of all the protoss army units in 1-2 shoots makeing toss units easy picking in both defensiv and offensiv play dont you think that the EMP shoot is a skill that should be researched?
|
@Question for Jinro: What is the most underrated Terran unit and why? How do I break your Mechplay (focus on Thors in the lategame) as Zerg?
@Question for Tasteless: Do you think you have hyped Ursadon enough so that we'll see a 3D Pandabearguy in Starcraft 2 and what will happen if they don't create it?
@Question for TLO : Was ist Deine Meinung zur Deutschen Starcraft 2 Szene im internationalen Vergleich? Wirst Du langfristig auf dem EU Server spielen, oder je nach Turnier wechseln?
|
Good replacement for Day9 this week since hes out of town :D
|
I hope this comes out tomorrow.
|
Ruh roh. We record Friday Korea time not Thursday Korea Time. Son of a bitch.
|
|
Disregard this, outdated question.
|
@Question!
SC2 pathing is wayetter than it was in broodwar, making chokes and ramps a lot less scary. Do you feel that increasing food cap to 300 would be beneficial? If not, what other options do you suggest or is there even a need for something?
@Question! for TLO
People are reporting that one of the unlisted balance changes was that neural parasite has a time limit of 12 ingame seconds. You are a big fan of infestors so how much this is going to affect your use of them? Was this as a huge nerf as people think it was?

I'm all excited that there is a big chance we are going to see you commentating again, but what's your plans as a gamer? Are we going to see you in tournaments competing? Because that would be awesome
@Question!
What do you think about the unlisted balance changes?

@Question
Tasteless, I was a random player throughout all the phase 1 beta, and still have a very difficult time trying to find a race that suits me best. How did you finally decide on your race in SC1 after playing 5 years of random? Should you choose the race you feel is your personal best, the one that offers the most comfortable mechanics, or are there other factors as well? Please offer any tips.
|
@Question it has been reported that BLINK no longer allows stalkers to cross unpathable terrain (eg. they can no longer blink to islands). What do you think of this change and the possible reasoning behind it if this is true and intentional?

@Question
Assuming its a late macro game with Max armies, excess minerals and gas etc etc. what do you think about the different methods of reinforcement by the races.
Zerg can store massive # of larva and re-max within a couple minutes after battle, with almost any unit composition assuming they have the tech structures
Protoss have Warp Gates can reinforce almost instantly the number of gateways they have, as well as chrono boost to cut production time. Units are also individually very powerful as well. (warped in HT/DT, chronoboosted colossus)
Terran have nothing must build units the old fashion way except in the case of reactors.. (which never seem to be very common and can only produce the "lower tier/weaker" units)
personally i see a clear advantage for zerg followed by protoss with terran at a distant 3rd... meaning once

I believe that last time JP just copy and pasted the text into the skype window and let TLO read it straight in German.

Must also add that I really really do enjoy the podcasts, they are extremely entertaining with all the flavor from the different characters. Love your job on this!

Prob better to type the questions in english so it doesn't say something like 'teamliquid members are nazis' or something like that.

@Question - What do you think about roaches no longer being able to burrow under Forcefields? While it was an underused tactic, do you think this will exacerbate Zerg's variety problem, or cause some players to experiment with other builds?

@Question Is it just me or do you guys also agree that there must be something done about the state of which Archons are in right now? I mean they must be one of the more underused units atm.

I hope you guys can clear up all the confusion around what patch 16 actually does.

This topic seemed to be lost due to all the excitement of the beta, but when are the F-Key's going to be fixed? The f5-f8 is very much out of the way and it gets in the way of my playstyle (I like to keep my keyboard hand planted down so I have a good reference point for when I'm erratically pushing buttons.) If it was changed back to f1-f4, I would starcraftgasm.
|
Will the podcast be live?
|
@Question: Do you care about Psychic Pathing, a k a "unintentional maphax"?
The pathfinding algorithm for all units makes decisions based on global map state information which not availible to the individual players. E.g. units will know that rocks are destroyed without scouting, or refuse to go up ramps because they "know" they are walled off..
|
@Question - For Dario: Ignoring balance, do you feel that the Infestor is a more, or less dynamic and interesting unit than the defiler, in terms of how it affects the zerg match-ups?
@Question - Also for Dario: Lately a lot of players have been commenting that zerg require an additional unit to make the race complete. Do you agree with this statement? Is there any unit which should be brought back from Broodwar?

I's hard to not be offended by this comment...
I would also write my question for Jinro in Swedish if I knew the language better because I think it's a fun thing to do and we are indeed an international community, so why not enjoy it?
But I know my place now and will try to post in less anti-Semitic languages in the future. Latin anyone?

@Question (Directed at Jinro and TLO) Do you think Mech Terran is to much trouble vs Protoss end game who can make a Tech switch into voidrays and roll over your tanks and the AA you have. Should I make a reactor pumping at vikings just incase of void rays. I use my energy to mule to keep up with the chrono boosted probes. Usually I can Hold off pushes but they pin me in and I cant push out and just out expand me. Before reset I was Low lvl Dimoand. What should I do.
Sincerely, The-War-bler- just incase if you cant pronounce it.

@question Are there any (pro)maps from Broodwar you'd like to see "reinvented" in SC2? What new featueres would you personally like to add?

No I mean like since none of the interviewers can read german/swedish/finnish/russian whatever people can type whatever and troll or something. It's also just kind of a hassle when jp makes whoever is on read the questions.

Pretty good conversation. Was having some issues with teh audio quality at times skipping. Otherwise, good production. LOVE having TLO on for fact-checking. This group of commentators/players has great great chemistry.

I love these podcasts! :-) One thing JP, I think you might have to be a bit more carefull with "ridiculing" people/things (in this episode Razer keyboard/MLG pro's). Not that I mind listening to it but it might come back biting you since you're so closely tied to MLG.

Hm in the podcast I said something along the lines of the disconnect screen now having a surrender button, but it appears I'm wrong. At least it's not there when you aren't the one that's disconnecting.
I had read a few posts saying there was one in the patch threads and I guess I shouldnt have taken them at face value :p

good job on the podcast. very congenial chat :p

errr, just realized how we kinda bashed Razor products woops

They joked about people paying famous players to play with them. I see no reason why they shouldn't/couldn't. You telling me that if someone like Idra or TLO plays 40 hours in a week they couldn't auction out 8 1-hour sessions and pull in some cash?

This is very common with many pro Halo 3 players. Not even joking, most pro gamertags have info in their bio on prices for friend requests and gametime.

I'm not sure, but maybe you are referring to the new surrender option for the AI after they type GG?
|
itmeJP, mainly the reason the 7G isn't very popular around TeamLiquid is the general hate around "gaming" keyboards. However what people are missing is that the 7G is actually a mechanical keyboard and not a shitty membrane/rubberdome like every single other gaming keyboard on the market including the Samsung sem-dt35. Mechanical keyboards have a lot better switches in the keys which results in better feedback, the durability is sky high compared to standard keys and you can pretty much choose from tons of different switches and thus customize the feeling you get when pressing the keys.
The 7G is probably the best keyboard marketed as a gaming keyboard, it's slightly more expensive than other mechanical keyboards that don't have the same name value but it's still a great deal compared to buying a crappy Razer one. I am sure if some of the professional gamers were to try out mechanical keyboards they would refuse to use their samsungs anymore.

Still prompted me to download one I missed, so necro successful.

I never seen Ep.7 Thx for the bump! lol
|
7g is also $150 which isn't helping it around here.
|
Kinda sad that there isn't any new episodes but it wasn't that of a bad bump. Only like couple of weeks and one more person got to see the latest episode. I would say that is a win.
|
is it me or does Jinro sound exactly like Richard Dawkins? Great podcast, I wish it wasn't just about patch notes though, and would go more into gameplay, strategy, and the general SCII scene.

JP, when do we get a post-release SotG? I need my SC2-pro-chat fix!

I know you guys are super tied up, but it may be worthwhile (for us at least!) for you and maybe some of the other casters to record a podcast previewing Raleigh. You know, a little added hype and some background on the players...
You'd definitely rope in a bunch more people into watching...paying for the HD stream.
Either way, have fun and we'll be waiting for the next SoTG..!
