First topic so bear with me, it'll probably suck
I'm sure everyone knows about the new Razer hardware coming out, and I too want everyone to be able to visually notice my APM as it soars into the 500s in big battles. However, the keyboard/mouse set is expensive as hell, so I forgot about it for a while.
Anyways, I was messing around in my registry the other day and I found a value called Razer (under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software for those of you who are curious) with some pretty interesting values and had an idea - why not make a DIY APM counter since the software support is probably already built into SC2?
I am by no means good at computers, and I've probably caused my system to BSOD several times by overzealous editing of the registry. But I'm home for the summer with no classes until August, and I have plenty of solder and spare keyboards. If anyone is willing to point me in the right direction I might give this a shot (and post the results of course)
Thanks for any suggestions!

If anyone can rig an APM counter to an amBX setup the world would become even more terrible and beautiful.

Wow, I had no idea what amBX was, just googled it. Really awesome, and I second that.

Thanks for any suggestions! Nada? ????????
Personally doesnt even matter to me, i dont plan on having any friends to watch me play since well..we dont have LAN though i guess if youre into that then sure. Id probably wait for the Razer keyboard and what have you to drop down though

amBX speakers are around $60 US. You'll be more immersed in the "rave" it looks like than using Razer.

R1CH, we summon the almighty wizard of TL. Please help us ol mighty computer god!

yo you just gave my boring, meaningless, and long summer a purpose. ill go get some solder tomorrow morning

Actually I've already done something similar with one of these just for interest sake
+ Show Spoiler +![[image loading]](http://www.terasic.com.tw/attachment/archive/296/image/DE2-70_D5M_LTM_800.jpg) (electrical engineer so I develop shit on these hence I have one)
It's pretty easy to count clicks and I just fed that data to the board over USB and lights pulse in pattern faster with higher APM.
I could make the screen change colour (ridiculously easy to implement, might go do that now actually) or whatever I wanted really.

haha i always thought it would be badass to have a keyboard where each button you press would glow, send a small wave out to nearby keys and fade. It would be crazy to see that in action with some monster APM players behind it.

what the hell is up with all these apm threads?
when did apm start being so important that you needed an apm counter during a game?

1) APM has been an important topic in starcraft for many years. 2) The importance of APM isn't being discussed here. The OP just seems to want to do a cool mod to his keyboard or whatever. Seems like a neat project to me.

You could make APM technology of your very own! A Youtube video is required upon successful completion.

ok, apms been important, but how many apm threads suddenly appear because of sc2? new products have been coming out where the main selling point is apm counters or what not.
if hes posting in the sc2 thread obviously he thinks a counter is important enough to be used in game
EDIT: i guess my point is, i dont like the idea of apm counters. There is no reason for it. If you have low apm, it doesnt mean you are a bad player. people should be focused enough on the game that they dont need to be reminded by their mouse. that is my opinion.
If you are doing it just as a fun project, by all means; consider putting this in a different thread to avoid an actual starcraft 2 discussion though...

Yes, this is more of a keyboard mod project than actual care about APM. I exaggerate APM in my OP for the sake of irony, since everyone seems to take APM so seriously lol. I can never keep a steady APM anyway, when I'm waiting for larvae to spawn at the beginning of games I'd hover around 16 APM but in battles where I use banelings I've reached 600 before, and in circumstances like this it would be pretty cool to have my keyboard glow red hot to impress all the non-existent girls watching me play starcraft
Anyways, few questions for tertle: do you have any links to basic resources that touches up on the stuff you are talking about? They would be helpful since google just turns up ricer mods like lining your keyboard with luminescent wires and stuff like that. Thanks
Also, razer's website talks about one of the features of their keyboard: + Show Spoiler + On-The-Fly Macro Recording allows for Effortless Configuration Record unlimited macros on-the-fly without having to take your eye off the game and immediately change between up to 10 profiles without the hassle of going into complex driver menus
Pretty vague, but I'm guessing that they're hotkey functions that correspond to these values in the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\razor + Show Spoiler + -AllyBaseUnderAttack -AllyUnitUnderAttack -APMValue -BuildingComplete -CalldownLaunch -DisableWindowsKey -MorphComplete -MothershipCompleted -MothershipStarted -OwnBaseUnderAttack -OwnUnitUnderAttack -ResearchComplete -ResourceDepleted -ResourceExhausted -SpecializationComplete -StartModule -TrainingComplete -UpgradeComplete -WarpInComplete
They were part of the SC2 installation, which doesn't come as a surprise considering Blizzard and Razor have been best facebook friends since forever. I hope that these functions are linked to nothing and turn out to be useless and that I'm just being a paranoid idiot with computer stuff, but man some of these seems to really favor those who have $120 to spend on a keyboard

I personally think an apm keyboard/mouse/headset is pointless. Theres is no reason to look at your equipment while you play. Infact i think it would slow you down. Why focus on what ur apm is when you could be focusing on playing the game/ doing things in the game. Doing so would actually raise ur apm. Tracking your apm will not raise your apm. The whole concept is a gimmick. Don't get sucked in ;P
|
everyone involved is gona get sued for copyright infringement ^^
|
Not that rigging your keyboard to show APM will mean anything, seeing as anyone can set it to go a certain colour for a certain APM. That means basically everyone's custom APM keyboard will have different colours for different APM values.

OP, Nice find!
I am confirming that these registry keys are for the Razer gear lighting.
Proof: If you look at the picture here: http://www2.razerzone.com/sc2/images/shadow-box-game-alerts.jpg
you'll see that the customizable alerts in this picture match EXACTLY the registry key entries.
(Picture is kind of small, that's how it is on the Razer page. You can still read it, or zoom in on it.)
You can even see the last item as "Mothership complete."
Pretty hard to deny that these correlate with the regkeys.
(Image is from this page: http://www2.razerzone.com/sc2/apmlighting.php Click any of the pictures, and go to picture #4 when the popup appears. Or just use the direct imagelink I gave above. This is just proof for skeptics.)
Also, to the electrical engineer with the beautiful electrigasmic gear, DO IT!!! ^^ Edit: This guy. Tertle. Fuck, you give nerds everywhere boners. + Show Spoiler +On June 27 2010 15:30 tertle wrote:Actually I've already done something similar with one of these just for interest sake + Show Spoiler +![[image loading]](http://www.terasic.com.tw/attachment/archive/296/image/DE2-70_D5M_LTM_800.jpg) (electrical engineer so I develop shit on these hence I have one) It's pretty easy to count clicks and I just fed that data to the board over USB and lights pulse in pattern faster with higher APM.
