Just out of curiosity, does anyone happen to know the Korean names of the Starcraft 2 Units? I tried searching on the forums, but I only found three or four unit names.

Anyone here play on the Asia server and have the whole list? I think it's really interesting how the names on the Western servers are different from the Eastern servers. If Korea decides to pick up Starcraft 2 as an E-Sport, it may be difficult for people to understand the commentaries as in Brood War, people can deduce what the commentators are saying based on their Eastern pronunciation of the unit names. So I'd really like to get to know some of the Korean names now. Thanks!

My high school buddy is working for a company that has been contracted to translate the unit names. I remember him complaining about how bad the names are.

Use the above link if you can read Korean, and otherwise... well, why even worry about it then?

Senior Articles for a High Templar? Way to make a badass psychic unit sound like a government functionary. My hat is off to you blizzard korean translators.

Monitoring monarch (Overseer). Are you kidding me?

I like Ultra-risk though, I think there must be a joke in here somewhere about the sad state the ultra is (was?) in

It's actually spike hell or thorn hell. Google translator must be thinking the first part of the phrase as go, which is understandable.

You have to note some words in English does not exist in Korean so it's impossible to translate them directly. (such as Templar, Archon, Hellion)

Some names are pretty bad though and there are a lot of controversy over naming of some units in Korean forums. (Raven abd hellion in particular)

Literal translations of unit names are always going to sound stupid. You can only comment on whether the names sound good if you speak the language. And of course google translated ones are going to sound retarded...

The names in Chinese are pretty funny too, I can post a list and translation if anyone wants.

Blizzard tried to translate the unit responses as well, I couldn't stop laughing when I first started playing (especially as Terran).

It's like dubbing a TV show, you shouldn't do it. It takes away from the performance and you miss so many little nuances...

And I want my engrish! If they start yelling in their own language half the fun is gone...

This is one thing I really disagree with on the changes made in the localizations. I think its great and cool that Koreans (and other people) will be able to call the units in a more native way, but I think its dumb now when we've been calling these units Drones, Marines, Zealots, Battlecruisers, etcetcetc. for the last 10+ years. Now we all of a sudden have different names for the same units across localizations and have to come up with a new name for these units when discussing the game/strategy/etc. with different people worldwide.

I can tell you that as a Korean, calling SC units by english names while speaking Korean does not sound absurd (to another Korean's POV with no english knowledge).

Don't see the point of the localizations.

EDIT: Actually, even while speaking to another Korean in Korean, even if they fully understand English, you tend to use konglish pronunciations for english words and terms. (At least I do, and all the Koreans I know)

Well...

Prelate:

an ecclesiastic of a high order, as an archbishop, bishop, etc.; a church dignitary.

Praetor:
–noun
(in the ancient Roman republic) one of a number of elected magistrates charged chiefly with the administration of civil justice and ranking next below a consul.

Executor:
–noun
1.
a person who executes, carries out, or performs some duty, job, assignment, artistic work, etc.
2.
Law. a person named in a decedent's will to carry out the provisions of that will.

Hierarch:
–noun
1.

2.

3.

Conclave:

–noun
1.

2.

3.
the assembly or meeting of the cardinals for the election of a pope.
4.
the body of cardinals; the College of Cardinals.
5.

Judicator:

any ruler.

Observer:
–noun

someone or something that observes.
2.
a delegate to an assembly or gathering, who is sent to observe and report but not to take part officially in its activities.

And for those who like especially obscure ones, Fenix was once called "Steward of the Templar":

–noun
1.
a person who manages another's property or financial affairs; one who administers anything as the agent of another or others.
2.
a person who has charge of the household of another, buying or obtaining food, directing the servants, etc.
3.

4.

5.
an employee on a ship, train, or bus who waits on and is responsible for the comfort of passengers, takes orders for or distributes food, etc.
6.
a flight attendant.
7.
a person appointed by an organization or group to supervise the affairs of that group at certain functions.
8.
U.S. Navy. a petty officer in charge of officer's quarters and mess.

Protoss nomenclature is almost entirely based off crossing religious and administrative offices, except their robots and ships, for some reason.

I'm not sure you guys get how this works.

Especially if you're just translating back from the Korean using an internet translator, you're getting an overliteral translation. "Monitoring monarch" is probably not quite that cumbersome in the original Korean -- that's just the essence of the Korean word(s).

I'm speaking as a translator of Asian languages into English -- though I don't know Korean. It's a common misconception.

This is probably the right place to share my hate for translation of names. I despise when I see a name/title translated either too literally or by changing it to something completely different. A Thor should be a Thor everywhere imo, Starcraft should be Starcraft. Just like for instance 'Stalin' is not Stealman in English..

gotta love the makeover that link made. Links that break the format should always be edited by using this method:

its nice, hit quote to see the coding for linking properly, but again only when you click Post, and you see that your link broke the format do you need to do this.

Not really, korean can produce an L-sound, they'd have to make it Ultral-list though, then it's spoken L, not R

rofl at pple using google translator but i guess most of us aren't koreans. but as a korean I find a lot of these names hilarious when translated back to english (based on what's given in the korean wiki link). some of my favorites (other than the "bear" we all know and love :D ) : 'pirate' for the viking, 'space collective/collector' for carrier, 'void cannon' for void ray, 'lethally poisonous bug' for baneling, 'transformer' for changeling (well i suppose 'changer' works too. synonymous :p) and 'nest-top' for spire. For the last one, when i read it, I imagined mutalisks making a nest at top of the spire and the momma mutalisk taking care of eggs to hatch on top of it while the papa mutalisk goes out to bring some workers for lunch!

Koreanization of these names are retarded and some of those names koreans have no problem saying it but still changed it.
