[R] Dedicated Replay Client?

I've been wondering just how likely it would be to have an application thats sole purpose is to let you watch replay files. I realize the extreme impracticality of loading up all of the assets onto a program that you can't even play the game off of, but is there any technical reason why this wouldn't work? I fully understand that it will never happen, but I'm still curious. It would be extremely nice (especially during the closed beta) if there was some way that you could watch replays without having the game. After release it wouldn't be important at all, but right now if there was a replay client that I could download for free off of the Blizzard site to watch replays without relying on youtube commentaries, I would love it.

Replays are at their most basic a list of commands, those commands are read as input and run through the games engine. So what you're asking for is something that replicates the SC2 game engine.

It would effectively need to replicate the entire game. Art assets, physics engine, everything. Of corse, you wouldn't be able to play the game from it, so it is extremely impractical, but is it still theoretically possible?

Starcraft 2 with only a watch replay button, of course it's theoretically possible, it's even practically possible.

Just install SC2 and unplug your mouse / keyboard and you have what you are asking.

but then you cant zoom in and out looking at the units /dance

i donno much about programming or software but imo it would be really really stupid since the mb count for the application would prob be very close if not exactly the same amount as the game which is like pointless. then again who would not play a game and JUST watch replays? seams kinda weird to me

The only time that it could be something of value would be during beta. Right now many replays are being posted all over, but you need to be in the beta (or have a cracked download) to watch them. I think it would be nice, but impractical in every way imaginable.

There is a cracked one out there somewhere. Replay watching was the first thing to get cracked I believe.

I would have to agree with kuresuti here...

Starcraft 2 with only a watch replay button, of course it's theoretically possible, it's even practically possible.

I don't really see how it would be completely impractical. All they would have to do is just make the replay component available through Bnet as a free program to download or access without a download. Then post the replays here on TL or on similar sites. This way you could watch the replays with all the functions instead of watching it however the person who put it on youtube decided to record it.

I don't understand this. The developers have been trying to make a system that does practically everything, and you want to split it up. The SC2 home is intended to be a place where you can : socialize, communicate, play, view replays who have a load of features which required multiple 3rd party software outside the game before. And there are allot more b.net features that aren't in the beta.

I'd just like a replay viewer that doesn't exit out every time I try to view a replay from an old patch. I've been trying to go through and save off all 50 or so cannon rushes I've done so far in order to make a video, and it's horribly annoying to lose my place in the replay list after each one finishes. Seeking also seems to be broken for the older replays.

I guess what he wants is the ability to watch replay's offline. Which I think should be a must.
