If you drop two nukes almost simultaneously does the other person hear "nuclear launch detected" twice every time? I'm envisaging a scenario in which you drop a real nuke somewhere important followed by a 'decoy nuke' somewhere less important but believable, so when your opponent hits spacebar it goes to the second one and he doesn't think to look for the first.

I assume they would, but I have no way to test that by myself~
Anyways, it has a 20x20 AoE. Deals 500 in the center, 8x8, 350 16x16 and 275 20x20.
With 24 scvs on your minerals and 6 on gas (fully saturated), you gain about 300mins and 100gas. This is the amount of resources your opponent would more or less lose if you were to target his mineral line (by aiming @ the center of his Command center). Now seeing as your opponent will target the location of your nuke without fault, trying to kill SCVs in such a manner would be a foolish attempt. As long as you keep the CC in the 8x8 radius, you will still be inflicting the full 500, so you should be aiming it slightly less than 1 CC distance away, as to target as many production buildings as possible. The nuke threat will still force him to retract his SCVs from gathering, and you get to deal more damage with your nukes!
Also, if you go for a nuke rush, by researching cloak too, and making one or two ghosts early so that they can sit on about 150 energy, you can EMP their CC(s) to strip their energy and if they do not have any turrets/ravens/ghosts, they'll be forced to eat the nuke! (I think )

holy shit I didn't know this.

Wow that's a really great point. I guess there's really no reason to drop the nuke right on the CC when the radius is so big.
And you can EMP CCs? wow. That's incredible. Thanks for the info. I guess i assumed EMP only worked on units. This makes me want to try some sort of emp harass vs terran to keep them from MULEing.

Space Bar takes you to the nuke? I didn't expect that...it wasn't like that in SC1, was it? They can just take it off the 'event' list so it doesn't react to spacebar anymore... Now that nukes are actually viable (at the current level of play) this makes a big difference.

also that screenshot up there is nuts - is that actually an in-game screenshot? i can't tell because i play on super low graphics, so nothing looks remotely close to that good

If space finds the nuke for you, doesn't that make nukes essentially useless? The nuke timing window is iirc 20, if you can find it instantly, that's all the time in the world.
|
Can anyone confirm you can find the nuke with spacebar? That's pretty retarded..

Yep.. I certainly hope this wasn't intentional on Blizzard's part. Cause if it was, talk about dumbing the game down to the next level.
Other than that, nukes do seem somewhat useful. In 1 replay TheLittleOne randomly nuked an expansion and even though opponent moved away his probes, he also accidently moved in 3 observers and they got killed. And funnily that was cost effective.

Yeah as far as i know it uses the same red dot mechanic as in bw, but to my knowledge there is no sounds made or maybe i am just not paying close attention when it happens to me.

Spacebar always made you go to the nuke, even in starcraft 1.

You're missing another excellent use by TLO of nukes in the same game.. Later on when his opponent was used to getting hit, he launched one at the expansion and at the same time put a few hellions between that expansion and the main.. When the probes go running out away from the nuke they ran directly into hellion fire and not a single one survived. It was beautiful.

I'm just going off Liquipedia

And I bet TLO wouldn't have tried to nuke the protoss army a few times if he had known his attacks could just be spacebar'd.

You have got to be joking me... I wish I knew about that... Honestly though I don't think it makes nukes any less powerful. Even without knowing about the spacebar thing I easily moved all of my drones/units out of the way for just about every single nuke ever used against me. Just the fact that people have to pull workers makes it effective.
