I find it sad that the spending cap vote was voted with "no" from the obvious teams like city but why united voted like this?
Also Chelsea abstaining is also sad but I don't expect a lot of them anyway.

because unlike city and chelsea, united didnt get a sugar daddy to build their financial power. uniteds since lost a lot of that power with continued failure in the club but its fairly obvious why united wouldnt want to handicap themselves further at this point. uniteds board would want to leverage the success of the clubs golden age as much as possible

that idea is not so radical. ive heard many many people say they preferred pre var days to this.
personally i would not be against the abolition of var. if were going to continue to give referees some slack for "human error", id rather those errors take place when theres only 3 referees to make a decision with and they have to do it live on the pitch. you can live with some decisions when its happening live and refs are granted the benefit of doubt.

refs really dont have an excuse for fucking shit up as badly as they do when they get slow motion screens replayed 10 times. if theyre not going to be held accountable for wrong decisions either way, just get rid of var. it wastes time, kills celebrations and creates way more drama/controversy than it should.

Happy cake day btw!

Aside from breaking up game flow, I feel this right here is the legitimate issue with VAR implementation as it stands in England. And it is very much a fair one.

I sort of understand the idea that it undermines referees, but swallow the pride and just have VAR make the calls. If the ref has missed something, they’ve missed it. The VAR guys can pore over the slo-mo and make the call and relay it. Do we really need that ritual of going to the TV monitor for the ref to review it? If the ref wants to own every decision, then maybe have them own it in a post-match interview too? I’m both for and against that move, I think in a vacuum it’s good for transparency, but it’s also further feeding all the toxicity and the circus around refereeing calls.

Tighten the threshold as per clear and obvious too.

The remainder are actually just problems with how the laws of the game and VAR intersect, I can’t really blame VAR for either.

1. Offside isn’t fit for purpose as a law written for the human eye in real-time to assess, often while not being perfectly in line with play. It just doesn’t mesh with robotic precision and interminable replays.

Either make it simpler, or more complicated to cover various cases. A return to ‘daylight’ as a standard, and if anyone is offside the goal is given is simple enough to adjudicate and also for players to adjust to.

Or make it more complicated and nuanced, although I’m unsure how to do that effectively. For example, an attacking player is marginally offside, but their back is to goal, a through ball is played and another picks it up and it leads to a goal.

How is a player with back to goal, or on the half turn gaining an advantage if their shoulder is marginally offside, if the defenders beside them are all already sprinting back to goal? On many occasions they simply aren’t, it’s a freeze frame of a foot race they’re already doomed to lose based on body position and momentum.

2. Handball is a mess at present. I hate seeing how many penalties are given due to it, hell I dislike seeing teams conceding goals where it’s obvious that the first/second defender are handicapped by having their arms behind their backs.

Perhaps it’ll introduce more wonkiness but I feel there should be two offences within the box. An inadvertent handball, regardless of how ‘natural’ your arms are held, indirect free kick. A blatant deliberate handball, or a handball that blocks a goal-bound shot that’s inadvertent but ‘unnatural’, yeah give a penalty there.

On the other side of the ledger I don’t think the fans want it fixed by and large. They want to complain about the refereeing constantly, they did it before VAR, indeed many advocated for VAR in the bloody first place.

This is not unique to football, but I do feel it’s more pronounced than in many other sports. Possibly just due to it being a bigger sport and part of the water cool chat much more than others.

Sky Sports article

I don’t know why Chelsea would abstain. There’s really only two types of team that would wish to do so.

1. Money is no object, turning profit is a bonus not the objective.
2. A spending cap limits an ability to gate crash the existing elite.

Chelsea are already an elite club anyway, in a bad spell sure. Most have assumed Boely’s lot are in it to make cash just as much if not more than gaining glory. Although the latter aids the former.

If you actually want to make money from football by owning a club, controlling costs is effectively the only way to do that outside of selling your club to the next lot, who also find they can’t make much money so they sell it on to the next lot.

As people up the page made out, the Prem is way less dominant than it should. But that’s not idiocy or wastefulness (sans a Chelsea), it’s more because effectively no matter how much more money they get coming in, it’s wiped out the other side because it’s inflatory in both wages and transfer fees.

If anyone has a better example do let me know but football is probably the most popular, high revenue-generating activity on Earth that ultimately is a giant sinkhole for many an investor.

If I was an investor I’d be biting the hand off anyone putting in cost control mechanisms that are reasonable in scope.

Bayern completely dominating RM the first 20 minutes, but dominating RM without capitalizing on it is meaningless. xD

They’re the best consistently underwhelming team around!

Give them the slight edge in this tie after this result for sure

How could this ever happen? Real was way worse than Bayern almost the whole game. :O

One funny bit is that usually Real is the one doing these ridiculous momentum shifts that got Bayern the two goals. This time Bayern got the turnaround and still only got the 2-2.

Have you watched Real in the CL knockouts the past half a decade? They just routinely do this haha.

Sure there was one year where I went ‘ok surely they can’t be second-best in a tie and advance this time?’ for about 4 separate ties in here haha

Yeah he's been good!

Fun game, should've been several more goals. Very open before the rematch.

The Bundesliga app is reporting that Dortmund result clinched a 5th German CL spot for next year, does anyone know if that's accurate?

Would be sweet! While I've always followed PL way more than Bundesliga (or La Liga or Serie A), my ideal world has the Bundesliga as the top dog.

It feels a bit odd to me, just off-hand I don’t recall non-Bayern German sides being particularly competitive in the CL for quite a while

Italy get an extra one too from what I can gather.

I mean it’s cool but haven’t they previously doled out/removed spots/automatic qualification based on a historic rolling coefficient rather than based on a single season’s?

I suppose that’s more deciding how to award spots to different leagues in general, whereas this is to accommodate the format change?

Leipzig and Dortmund have made at least quarters a few times, Leverkusen and Eintracht Frankfurt the same in the Europa League

I mean Liverpool and City have made multiple CL finals in this rough epoch to be fair.

Also unbeknownst to me prior to investigation when it comes to coefficient calculation they use individual match results as opposed to tie results, hence Dortmund got the Bundesliga over the line yesterday despite it still being a tie they haven’t won.

Not really making a point with that but did find it interesting nonetheless!

There seems to be actually a constellation that when Dortmund wins the CL trophy, a sixth slot would go to Germany

Dortmund are certain of a slot along with Bayer Leverkusen, Bayern Munich, Stuttgart and Leipzig. If Dortmund finish fifth and win the Champions League, the team who finish sixth – currently Eintracht Frankfurt – would also qualify.
