But things have just gone horribly wrong and they haven't won a single game all season. Don't know enough of the details as to what's really going wrong there. Is this the english equivalent of Schalke then? Minus the Coach and likeability?

https://understat.com/league/EPL for reference Anyway, looking at that, Sheffield U looks very unfortunate. They're a bottom 3 team here, too, but with 15.62 points instead of 2 points. Brighton is almost equally unlucky (on the expected points table, they're ahead of Tottenham and virtually tied with Manchester United). While WBA actually has more points than what they could have expected based on performance. Should also be a pleasant read for Pande, and similarly indicates that Manchester City has been a bit unfortunate. I mean, it's just a curious little thing, not too significant. And I think this season, Sheffield is boned anyway. 0-2-15 after 17 games is extremely poor. But normally, a team with that poor of a record will have been utterly destroyed on many occasions. But for Sheffield, 11 of their 15 losses were lost by 1 goal. I feel bad for Sander Berge also - he's one of the most promising Norwegian young players and the way I understand it, he's been performing fairly well.

It’s not just this season either, basically they’ve fallen off the face of the earth since football resumed, perhaps fans gave them that extra 1-2% they need to get over the line in many of these games. If memory serves Sheffield United rather outperformed their xG/calculated points last season, but nowhere near to the degree they’re underperforming via those metrics now. It’s just strange. They rarely play atrociously and are competing in almost any game and generally perform, they’re just not getting points. Vs Fulham and West Brom who’ve looked absolutely appalling at times but have had the odd game where they do alright and get some points on the board. We could be in a weird scenario where Sheffield United take the record off Derby as the worst Premier League team ever without arguably even being the worst team in the league this season!

Additionally, higher quality strikers will score a higher % of chances than expected while lower quality strikers will not, although here the sample sizes for half a season are too small to be conclusive anyway. Having a great goalie will also make your expected points lower compared to your real points, as a great goalie will save a bigger % of shots.

If all the teams with 15 or 16 games played their remaining games and we got the right results, we could see 8 teams with 32 or 33 points. Right now I'm feeling good for Manchester. I thought Liverpool was gonna run away with it after their game vs Crystal Palace (where they were absolutely fantastic), but then City seems to have hit their stride, and Liverpool got 2 points from the three games following that. Manchester United is more vulnerable - if Bruno Fernandes gets injured, there's no replacement for him - but if he doesn't get injured, then I have no problems picturing them as league winners. (Again - since signing him, they've gotten the most points out of any team, that was the case last season, and it has continued this season. ) Could it possibly be that losing CL was a blessing in disguise?

If the slumbering beast of City can keep awake and as alert as they were in the shellacking they gave Chelsea and Liverpool can keep ticking over until they get their injured personnel back and firing they are still by a distance the best sides in the league. No guarantees of either, I’d still probably take a world without Covid on balance but at least it’s given us a very unpredictable and exciting premier league!

Its an absolute rats nest that's impossible to understand for the average person.
