I do think following the expected points table is kinda interesting. And while having good strikers and a great goalie are important qualities for a team, it does say something about the performance. I mean, I'm not even too into the maths, but the way I understand it, teams score and concede goals according to chances rather than according to actual goals, and then points are tallied in accordance.

https://understat.com/league/EPL for reference

Anyway, looking at that, Sheffield U looks very unfortunate. They're a bottom 3 team here, too, but with 15.62 points instead of 2 points. Brighton is almost equally unlucky (on the expected points table, they're ahead of Tottenham and virtually tied with Manchester United). While WBA actually has more points than what they could have expected based on performance.

Should also be a pleasant read for Pande, and similarly indicates that Manchester City has been a bit unfortunate.

I mean, it's just a curious little thing, not too significant. And I think this season, Sheffield is boned anyway. 0-2-15 after 17 games is extremely poor. But normally, a team with that poor of a record will have been utterly destroyed on many occasions. But for Sheffield, 11 of their 15 losses were lost by 1 goal. I feel bad for Sander Berge also - he's one of the most promising Norwegian young players and the way I understand it, he's been performing fairly well.

Nice find! I wonder what makes up for the (sometimes huge) differences between those numbers and the actual points. Is it mostly just luck? Quality of the forward's finishing? Ability of a team to grind out the points when it's really needed?

It really just seems Sheffield United are exceptionally unlucky and the margins are very tight.

It’s not just this season either, basically they’ve fallen off the face of the earth since football resumed, perhaps fans gave them that extra 1-2% they need to get over the line in many of these games.

If memory serves Sheffield United rather outperformed their xG/calculated points last season, but nowhere near to the degree they’re underperforming via those metrics now.

It’s just strange. They rarely play atrociously and are competing in almost any game and generally perform, they’re just not getting points. Vs Fulham and West Brom who’ve looked absolutely appalling at times but have had the odd game where they do alright and get some points on the board.

We could be in a weird scenario where Sheffield United take the record off Derby as the worst Premier League team ever without arguably even being the worst team in the league this season!

Combination of luck, style of play, and where your team has most quality, imo. More quality midfield/ more possession oriented play will generally produce more chances - but not necessarily higher quality chances, while playing a counter attacking style of play will lead to your chances being bigger chances on average. (Consequently, it should really be no surprise that Tottenham, couched by Mourinho, is a team that performs better than expectation, while City, coached by Pep, performs worse than expectation. )

Additionally, higher quality strikers will score a higher % of chances than expected while lower quality strikers will not, although here the sample sizes for half a season are too small to be conclusive anyway. Having a great goalie will also make your expected points lower compared to your real points, as a great goalie will save a bigger % of shots.

crazy table.

If all the teams with 15 or 16 games played their remaining games and we got the right results, we could see 8 teams with 32 or 33 points.

Right now I'm feeling good for Manchester. I thought Liverpool was gonna run away with it after their game vs Crystal Palace (where they were absolutely fantastic), but then City seems to have hit their stride, and Liverpool got 2 points from the three games following that. Manchester United is more vulnerable - if Bruno Fernandes gets injured, there's no replacement for him - but if he doesn't get injured, then I have no problems picturing them as league winners. (Again - since signing him, they've gotten the most points out of any team, that was the case last season, and it has continued this season. ) Could it possibly be that losing CL was a blessing in disguise?

What a season indeed.

If the slumbering beast of City can keep awake and as alert as they were in the shellacking they gave Chelsea and Liverpool can keep ticking over until they get their injured personnel back and firing they are still by a distance the best sides in the league.

No guarantees of either, I’d still probably take a world without Covid on balance but at least it’s given us a very unpredictable and exciting premier league!

You know the craziest thing about this season's table? Arsenal after their horrific run is only 10 points behind Liverpool lol.

Yanited win vs Scouse and they favourites imo, Scouse away from is awful lol, they looked so poor vs Southampton in the first half, honestly looked like carbon copy of the Villa game. The second half they showed a bit more and Southampton parked the bus and hung on, but the chances Scouse created weren't amazing clear cut ones and that is why Klopp was moaning and Carragher was going mad in studio lol.

It's Liverpool vs United not the other way around though, and Liverpool at home hasn't lost in the premier league since April 2017.

Does the MLS have anything like FFP to adhere to? If not and all the team owners are billionaires, the owners should just deal imo

They have salary caps and a complex series of rules with drafts Targeted allocation money General allocated money Designated player slots they can pay above the salary cap but it doesn't count against said salary cap.

Its an absolute rats nest that's impossible to understand for the average person.
