I think this was a way for UEFA to not demand major investment in building new stadiums and/or upgrading existing stadium. Also the home field advantage is less because home teams are not seeded one as they normally are.

Spain trying Portugal tactics? 3 draws in the group stage to the title?

Okay, this polish box is a funny place. Everyone takes a stab...

Morata is straight up cursed, the guy has legit 1000 chances a game for Spain and he just can't finish them, he scored one today but wow.
|
what the fuck. Luis Enrique subbing out both Gerard Moreno and Morata and leaving no forwards in the fields.
I just don't get him. Why doesn't he play Llorente as a offensive midfield or close to the forwards? He is the second top scorer at Atletico Madrid... He is not a half back. Why Thiago or Azpiliqueta doesn't play?
The second half of the match was terrible.

Spain is off my list for possible teams winning it all ... or winning a game at all tbh.

I thought Poland will get wrecked today but this game was actually winnable. Also it's crazy how powerless Spain looked despite 70% possession.
|
Damn somehow Poland clawed their way to a draw, most unexpected

What a ridiculous day of football. I can't get over that penalty miss and subsequent failure to convert. I have sadly not come to expect much from Morata

Secondly, if he takes Hummels off, why on earth did he not bring on Sule for him instead of Can who isn't a CB lol xD Because ginter and hummels are playing a great tournament? Great tournament its 2 games old and they have conceded 3 goals in these two games? Hummels was embarassed by Mbappe and was/is the reason Germany have to play a back 3 in the first place cuz he has no pace. Ginter might be doing fine but Rudiger has not looked good at all. Sule starts for Bayern the best club in Germany...why he not getting a look in? Dortmund not been good defensively all season either lol
Yes, conceding 2 goals against Portugal and 1 against France = doing horribly defensively. I mean conceding against the two most stacked teams of the tournament is NORMAL.
Also Hummels wasnt embarassed by Mbappe. He showed his skills and importance in today's game again.

Should be a wild and fun round of 3rd matches. All teams still in contention (except North Macedonia?). The top spots in Groups A-C seem locked in, but anyone's guess who will top Groups D-F. The advanced round brackets are probably going to be quite messed up and imbalanced.

Turkey isn't technically eliminated (like north macedonia is) - but they probably need to win by 4+ goals to be in contention - and not even that would make them safe.
|
Imho the most funny stat line, who knows what it is? 1960, 1964, 1968, 1972: 0 1976: 1 1980, 1984, 1988, 1992: 0 1996: 1 2000: 1 2004: 2 2008: 0 2012: 1 2016: 3 2021: 5 (after 24/52 games)
If we extrapolate this trend, what will it be in 2024???
+ Show Spoiler +This is the number of own goals.

Technically in groups D (when Croatia and Scotland draw) and group E (when Spain loses and Poland draws or loses) the 3rd place finishers could also end with less than 3 points. Then Turkey could advance with something like a 1-0 today and advance with 1-5 goals. Bonus points if the goal is an own goal.
|
Groupstage magic minmax scenarios:
Worst possible 3rd place who could still advance: 2 points, -1 GD Croatia ahead of Switzerland and Spain
Best possible 3rd place that could be eliminated: 4 points, +-0 GD Sweden and Austria with the other 3rd places having 4 pts and +1 GD except in group B where 6pts 3rd place is possible
|
Group C is basically dead. Austria and Ukraine likely to have a gentleman's agreement to play out a 0-0 draw (reminds me of the horrible Italy-Mexico match in WC 1994 where both teams just passed the ball around aimlessly for the last 15-20 minutes as a 1-1 draw would be enough to send both teams through the next stage).
|
Italy doing the full rotation for the last game... Imho in the past this more often backfired than it helped...

True but aren't they top no matter what in that group?

That really wasn't difficult.
Also my remark was more about that usually resting playersand shuffling around ruined the flow of teams, especially when they were performing as dominant as italy was so far.
