I think there was some talk about it before the Lyon game last season and now Chelsea seems to find plenty of success with back 3 too. That could be true, although from memory some of those occasions have also been peak Pep overthinking and making disastrous tweaks. Lyon notably where I think he mirrored their formation and neutered his own team. Plus to a degree I suppose not all that many teams deploy that way, so a few bad results and your overall stats are looking pretty poor. Whatever Tuchel is doing seems to consistently cause City issues and does feel a bit different from other sides. I’d imagine there’s more subtle tweaks and it’s not as simple as just playing 3 at the back. I’d be interested to see what Tuchel does going forward, I don’t think this is even how he wants to play, but the best mode of play he could devise for the squad he inherited.

Some of his quirky theorycrafting clearly backfires, although I’d love to hear the rationale that underpins his plans for some of these games. I’m sure they made sense on paper, like that weird build you see pulled out in a GSL match that fails miserably. It’s an interesting element of modern elite football, coaches aren’t just drilling their teams into certain ways of playing, but there’s all sorts of scheme and counter-scheme for one off games involving the top dogs.

He's definitely brilliant but sometimes it's like he outplays himself Hey it keeps it fun for us neutrals, if City converted their consistent status as one of Europe’s best to more good CL runs I’d be much more sick of them than I already am. Plus his tactical experiments are interesting, like Cancelo being half full back/half centre midfielder or his continued project to not play with a centre forward.

not that i have any particular affinity or expectations for him, but i think its pretty pathetic that he is ASKING to leave after half a season. if he does move away from paris i would lose all respect for him

He stayed with Spurs a long time. If it becomes a pattern I would think about it being a problem. But who knows why he want to leave, maybe his family hates it there or there are problems inside the club.
