They don't have to pay 100's of millions for a player. They don't need to take out 3 loans to build the biggest bestest stadium ever.

It just shows how detached from reality these people really are. They make the argument they need a super league for the money while the next day Real Madrid signs alaba for a wage of 10 million a year net (which is like 15-20 million gross) and a signing bonus of 20 million. For many clubs thats more than their entire budget.

As long as incentives don't change more money isn't going to solve the issue. They'll just spend it all again. The clubs which joined the super league have had record revenues (except last year) but they're still overspending. The only part of the super league proposal which would've helped is the agreement of spending 55% on the budget for football wages, transfers etc. But you don't need a super league for that.

its not happening in the other leagues, which is why these clubs are trying to break off and make their own rules. the salary cap issue was touched upon as well and they said they would implement it in the super league.
its obvious that mismanagement aside, there arent enough rules in place that create a system which requires less spending. uncapped salaries/transfer fees and unregulated agent fees are the obvious culprits and in their desperation for success the big clubs have no choice but to indulge in these requests despite the piling debt.
if they didnt completely shit the bed with the announcement of the super league and they didnt make it a closed tournament i think there would have been a lot more division amongst fans. on the surface it is still way more money going to the biggest clubs but the fact that they were planning on immediately addressing key financial concerns in the industry would have been a huge plus to many people.
so far fifa/uefa/fa etc have all shown that theyre too incompetent to do that

The issue isn't the money but how can they afford it? I can understand how Chelsea could or PSG can afford such money, but Real isn't owned by a rich person, is it?

Also there's still no wage cap, right? I think we should have a transfer and wage cap, so nobody can do - hey, I own Amazon, I have gazillions, let's pump 40 billions(lulzorz, couldn't notice it on my statement) into some random team and have fun.
I imagine France should be able to take this unless Lilbow is busy practicing for Starcraft III. | KadaverBB is my fairy ban mother.

So the pyromaniacs had to break away, because there were not enough rules against wild fires and creating their own league was the only way to get them...

If those 12 clubs would have been serious about "we have to limit wages", then all they do is to agree with each other and restrain themselves. Everyone responsible for the wage spiral except PSG was sitting at their table...
If they stop this escalation, Bologna, Nürnberg und Aston Villa are not suddenly starting to offer Messi his 600m... So poor Messi would have to look around, if he can affords his kids school meals of 200m :/

youre joking about the clubs agreeing amongst themselves to just be good sports and arbitrarily cap wages right? thats just not going to happen. unless theyre bound by the rules of the game they will do whatever they can to get the edge over the others

To be honest, English clubs really don't need SuperLeague. PL button club makes more TV rights money than the botton 17 clubs in la liga. And PL will keep growing with English as a global language.

I can understand why top Spanish or Italian clubs are interested in the idea and why Florentino is so obssesed (Altough he is a bastard that only lies in his interviews)

With both Aubameyang and Lacazette out, we could very well lose by two goals or more

It is a bit sad that people fall for such PR nonsense. Basically said they should listen to fans RIGHT AFTER betraying football failed and they fear a backlash.

My thought on it is that we know Arteta had no say in the decision on the Super League. If this is just a PR statement, it is disappointing, but it could very well be what he wants to say while also not getting fired by the board

Yeah I think this whole "listen to the fans" thing is part of the problem. The fans should have real power in the clubs. It shouldn't be a question of whether the directors choose to listen or not -- the fans should simply be able to kick them out if necessary.

I do think the Bundesliga model is really good and if the fans across England keep pressure on PL and maybe the government, change could happen. I just worry that too many people are going to accept the new normal and these problems will persist

Yea, I agree. And the whole apologize/listen/resign maneuvering is all about getting people back in their armchairs so that we can start pretending that things are fine, and we will once again have the bit-by-bit worsening of the whole footballing world that has been going on since the early 90s tbh.

How would you do that?

Bundesliga has a different history, they didn't allow private ownership and THEN they changed this under the rule 50 + 1.

PL has a different situation and if you change the rules it will cost money and who's gonna pay them. It's not impossible, it's just soooooooooooooooooooooo expensive.

It was a surprise to me too lol.
I'm old enough to just about remember him playing. What a player he was.
He was somewhat overshadowed at Liverpool by Ian Rush but still, a great player.

I'm by no means a political or football managing expert, but I would start by having new financial regulations that are actually enforced to limit ridiculous expenses and transfer fees. I don't see it happening, but the Tories could capitalize on the ire of the English football fans and force the owners to no longer be the sole controlling interest of the clubs. I think that there needs to be far less things like Sky charging ridiculous rates for PL matches to English citizens. There's too much money in football and maybe having it where fans own the club would help rein that in. Financial reform would just need to be enforced by UEFA (fat chance) otherwise clubs line Barca, PSG, Juventus, and Real Madrid breeze to a CL semifinals with their amount of money

I have no idea if this is even a sensible idea
