The initially invited "three additional clubs" Were PSG, Dortmund, and Bayern, but they all refused.
I don't think that the ESL group had another three lined up; I'm willing to bet that they thought that the aforementioned three clubs would eventually cave and join.

I thought disband could easily happen in a few weeks as the resistance starts forming something more concrete and substantial, but that was never going to happen in a handful of days. I think the backlash was a lot harsher than expected for some of them tbh, particularly for the reluctant joiners, and this required every team to join in to succeed. Hmm, possibly. I have to say, if I ever went against multiple rich & powerful organizations and vast majority of biggest football fanbases in Europe simultaneously, I'd be prepared for a war. Maybe the players' reaction surprised them or something.
Imagine just dropping this on the players though. I thought these were supposed to be businesspeople. Why leave something like that unplanned?

I think it's just the unmeasurably thick elitism of these twats who clearly have no connection with ordinary people. To them, the players, staff, and fans are all just plebs who shut up and do as they're told, or they get the boot.

Not only this, but they assume that the players only care about big pay checks.
The problem is that the majority of players want big pay checks but they don't want to give up international football or look like horrific people while earning that money. Not only this, these players aren't desperate low-wage workers that can be pushed around; they live extremely comfortable lives and have options in terms of employment.
To be fair, a lot of people in this thread (and across most social media/forums) assumed the same thing and didn't appreciate the resistance that the players themselves would put up.

You can include me in that, I didn't see this coming... Well not today :D Obviously with hindsight... If this was down to the players then the owners made an incredibly basic mistake. Your ridiculously wealthy business could be temporarily stopped or permanently wrecked by about 25 individuals and you don't tell them before you do something that will drastically affect their careers and destroy their public image? Are you fucking kidding me? What the hell.

The only reason the players protested was because of people like us who forced the players to be held accountable.
You think without all the threats the players would have cared?

fear of being banned from the national teams and competing in the world/EU cup is probably also a big issue. For plenty of players the chance to play for their national team is literally a childhood dream.

They would have cared, but no one group forced the clubs' hand.
The only reason that the clubs made this decision is because everyone came out against them so forcefully.
