Got a memo on media package with NBA broadcast. Also general report by WOJ
Info:
- Fewer games (78 min), same standard computation of rates - Revenue share on local and non/marquee games (to encourage small market team games) - Restructure of distribution rights of pre season games - Restructure of ad scheme (in relation to broadcast time. I think their slanting for less tv breaks like football [the one which you dribble the ball with your foot], which means ad revenue will be padded in elsewhere [*cough jersey and on court display cough*]) - New quote bid on additional mid season and pre-playoff broadcast schedule (this is the play-in tournament woj is talking about)\\
TLDR:
- fewer games - more broadcast of shitty games (lol) - less tv ad breaks but MORE MORE MORE in game ad displays (where hmmmmnn...) - mid season tournament - post reg season, pre playoff one game knockout play-in for 7th and 8th spot (7 plays 8th, 9 plays 10, winner of 7v8 gets 7th seed, loser of 7v8 plays winner of 9v10 for 8th seed)

Giving the 9th and 10th seed a shot at the playoffs could help with tanking
|
Didn't someone figure out that we basically knew seeds after 30 games?
|
Toronto plays Philadelphia on Monday. Lowry is still out with a broken thumb. I think poor little Freddie is gonna get smothered like he did in the playoffs.

True. My read based on the proposed rate and buy in for the new season is that this has very little to do with improving competitiveness and more to do with increasing revenue streams. If 9 and 10 are tanking, they have no incentive at all to want to enter the playoffs. Moreover, 82 games is already too much to decide who are the best teams, and its not like Euro League where entering the POs is a special event. More than half the teams enter the PO each year, and practically 7-8 of the 14 who are out want to be out anyway. This is really increased commercialization of the league.
We have no other option though, so meh.

Being from Europe, the American way of bloating the leagues with a bazillion of games always has puzzled me. What's the point in playing 82 games? I get that it's good for the TV market, but it puts a huge toll on player health and makes the second half of the season kinda dull, because lots of teams are either safely in or out of the playoffs.

More games means more TV money and more money from ticket sales. The players' union agrees to an 82 game schedule during every negotiation session with the owners. The players and owners both want the extra money that goes with an 82 game regular season and 4 rounds of BO7 playoffs.
back in the 40s, 50s, and 60s when the schedule increased from ~60 games to ~80 games players were not nearly as powerful and explosive. This allowed them to play several games per week and not get injured.
Now players are way more explosive and powerful and this results in many more connective tissue injuries. Connective tissue injuries are slow to heal due to low circulation.
I'll give you an example of how the sport is exploding in Canada. I went to a 1st round playoff game in 2007 sitting 20 rows off the floor behind one of the baskets. My ticket was $66. Last year for game 5 of the 1st round that same ticket was $600.
As much as fans might be whining about "too many games"... they keep spending more money. As long as fans keep on spending more money the owners will make sure there are lots of ways for fans to keep giving them more money.

Negate it. Instead of 10 teams competing for 8 spots with 5 tanks it could be 12 teams competing for 10 spots with 3 tanks. The teams at the very bottom will tank regardless but the 11-13 seeds could now be in reach of making the post-season in some form.

meh, Harden has been an ok defender the last couple of years. he has been ok this year.

Marc Gasol is living inside Joel Embiid's head rent free.

I'd say Draymond is to the Curry/Klay Warriors what Dennis Rodman was to the Jordan/Pippen Bulls. Extremely fucking valuable but incapable of leading a team to success and therefore by my definition not a superstar. I think in general these kind of players are underrated for what they provide because what they provide isn't scoring.

|
So what about the 100M contract... as JJ would say, hmmnn
|
i'd say Horford, Millsap, and Draymond are all getting paid approximately what they are worth.
|
It depends on what you value more. Do you want the Carmelo type that can carry a bad team to mediocrity or do you want a Draymond type who can make a good team great? Fans have normally overrated the solo gunner style. The Warriors of the past few years had a lot of players who are able to play with stars but their skill sets wouldn't translate well to a G-league team.
