Drama, close racing, collisions, a tight championship battle, rain chaos, questionable decisions by the race direction (Spa...), suprising victories (Ricciardo, Ocon)... the list goes on. And it's the last season of the current regulations which makes it even more special. The old guys are slowly fading out, Kimi is gone tomorrow, Alonso, Seb and Lewis will follow soon. Perez and Bottas are also a bit older. The amount of young talent we're going to have in the next years is insane. Russell in the Merc, Max, the super strong duo of Sainz (who is still surprisingly young) and Leclerc, Lando at McLaren, the AT boys and Mick... who is kinda stuck at Haas. I really hope Haas somehow build a stronger car next year, because I really want to know whether Mick can compete with the best. Mick's main problem is the current pairing at Ferrari though. These seats are blocked for the next few years. Alfa doesn't look like a great step up, maybe Mick can somehow get into Aston Martin, but they're strongly tied to Mercedes. Of course, he has to perform well first. This year only showed us that Mazepin sucks. Williams is going to be interesting. Latifi has been really consistent this season, he's by no means exceptional, but he's a very solid driver. Albon on the other hand knows that this is his last chance to leave a mark. Piastri is gonna get his seat once Alonso finally calls it quits. Pourchaire is also a candidate for a seat. I still hope Illott gets a shot one day, but I doubt it. As for tomorrow's race: I hope they don't crash. I want a close and fair battle. And I want Lewis to win. That's all.

But sometimes they even change to used tyres during the race. Is it really that hard to keep 4 sets brand new for the sunday? At the end of FP1/2/3, they have to return 2 sets for each, so that means going into qualifying, they'll have up to 6 new sets available. All teams that get into Q3 get to use the 13th set, which is the softs. For a backmarker team, they will typically just spend 2 sets on Q1. Top teams will typically spend 1-2 on Q1 (used twice unless the driver is at risk). Midfield teams will almost always use up 2 sets in Q1, as getting through on a used set isn't guaranteed. That leaves 4-5 sets for Q2. Almost all teams will use 2 sets here, and if they qualify top 10, will need to start on that set. Often the banker lap is a scrub set if the team only has 4 sets available. That leaves 3 new sets + Q3 set for Q3. Q3 and a new set used here, which leaves. Top 10 - 1-2 new sets, starting on Q2 tire. 11-15 - 2-3 new sets, free choice of tire. 15+ - Plenty of choices, pretty open to use up a set or two extra in FP. There will be other sets available, but qualifying typically takes 15-25% of the life of a tire, which can be very important for pit strategies. For races which are easy one stoppers, they might drop down to one new set and a set of used softs/mediums(quali), but that is gambling that they won't get bitten too hard if there's a late safety car or a tire failure of some sort.
