Great ref. Obviously you CAN justify the red card. Though usually a hand to the face in the battle for the ball will get you a yellow (if the ref doesn't call it violent conduct). Personally in 20 years of watching football I can't remember one time when such a situation was awarded a red even though this exact situation happens nearly every game. The first penalty is only justified if it was an intentional handball. In my opinion stumbling onto the ball because you get shoved is not intentional. The referee should have called a foul there in favour of Panama. The second penalty was the correct decision, though it happened of an offside play. Won't give the ref shit for this though. That was only easy to see if you had a replay :D As someone who was cheering for Mexico (some of my relatives are mexican) this was just sad to see. You know the ref fucked up when even Mexican TV called it Panama 1 - Referee 1 after the first penalty. | ||

I'd be in favour of 1 yellow and 1 penalty. But I think making a case for corruption is a tad premature, none of the calls individually was outrageous. Those kind of decisions happen every week. | ||

That appears to be the tenor of a few articles I've read about it. Panama being very unlucky here but just inconsistent refereeing in general for this tournament. Maybe someone who has been watching a lot can weigh in on that. | ||

You know the ref fucked up when even Mexican TV called it Panama 1 - Referee 1 after the first penalty. he never had balance after trying to clear the ball and tried to go back to the ball, he never got pushed cause he was going to fall regardless. pretty sure the goalie had the mexican player beat on the ball if the defender had not fallen on it. red was a bit much looking at that ONE play. i didnt see the game so unless the player had been warned before or something, it might have made sense. | ||

Bear in mind that Mexico got an incredibly controversial penalty in the quarter final as well in like the last minute of extra time. The decisions are adding up, and their timings are curious. Not saying there is match-fixing, but it is mighty suspicious. (With the personal disclaimer that I haven't watched the tournament) | ||
