Main Card (Pay-Per-View) Women's Bantamweight: Ronda Rousey (c) vs Sara McMann Light Heavyweight: Daniel Cormier vs Patrick Cummins Welterweight: Rory MacDonald vs Demian Maia Welterweight: Mike Pyle vs TJ Waldburger Welterweight: Robert Whittaker vs Stephen Thompson
Preliminary Card (Fox Sports 1) Women's Bantamweight: Alexis Davis vs Jessica Eye Bantamweight: Raphael Assuncao vs Pedro Munhoz Bantamweight: Cody Gibson vs Aljamain Sterling Flyweight: Zach Makovsky vs Josh Sampo
Preliminary Card (UFC Fight Pass) Lightweight: Rafaello Oliveira vs Erik Koch Lightweight: Ernest Chavez vs Yosdenis Cedeno
As a side note, something that I'm really somewhat boiling about is that Raphael Assuncao, despite being on a 5-fight winning streak including a win over TJ Dillashaw, is fighting in the preliminary card against a nobody... What...?
Ahh, can anyone explain to me what a "walk-on" is for colleges?
Also, lol, Cormier seemed genuinely pissed off at Cummins, talking himself up as highly as possible about how he's actually undefeated... Surprised he didn't just flat out say "I'll beat you into living death."

Doesn't "walk-on" mean you get on the team without having to go through selection.
That is, if you have a good resume at high school level you can "walk on" to a college team instead of having to try out....
lol what a bunch of bullshit, they just needed to sell a no-namer because nobody else in their right mind would take a fight on 10 day's notice, so they trumped up this phony-ass story about how these guys don't like each other. This is so silly, why does the UFC feel the need to do this? To get the fans all riled up like "Ohhh, so much talk, I wonder what's going to happen, I hope so-and-so gets his ass kicked."?
At least they could pretend to actually be upset or something, I dunno.

"walk-on" refers to a guy who showed up first day of practice and made the team, regardless of what his high school accomplishments were. It's isn't so much impressive that he walked on, but that he walked on and then became an All American. The reason it's impressive is because its generally considered most guys who are worth anything/going anywhere were picked up during the recruiting process. You do see it with all sports though.

I think this is more of the UFC seeing a perfect opportunity. For starters, they didn't just grab a no name...they grabbed an All American and US National team wrestler, and a guy who helped other guys train for the olympics (like chael has done, and gsp has done). He was a legit MMA prospect until his trouble with the law. Beyond that they now have a guy who if he wins they can market, because his resume is a lot more impressive than a lot of guys in MMA, and because of that resume it won't look nearly as bad if DC doesn't win (because the UFC hype train can downplay a loss to their new up and comer). From an instant marketing standpoint they have someone who actually brings an interest to the fight...I'm more interested in this fight than I was with DC/Shad, because any time a guy says he made another guy cry in practice and that other guys response is "I was going through some personal shit"...I want to see the guy who cried (DC) get some revenge lol.
I dunno, I think DC needed a fight that got under his skin so he can try to go for the finish. He just isn't that marketable imo...
Rousey/Mcmann is going to be fucking awesome. I have no idea who is going to win. McMann has the strength and wrestling to not get so controlled, but she could still get tossed. I think a lot of this fight might be clinch stalemates and they keep it on the feet to show off their improved striking. More realistically we're probably going to see a cringe worthy female ground battle.
edit: Also, in Mousasi/Machida did anyone see that reversal Mousasi had on the ground? He hooked the leg and head and sort of cradled Machida and then just casually rolled him over. That was awesome. Wish Mousasi didn't fight like a zombie..think I saw him nod off once or twice.

Yeah, Rashad Evans vs Daniel Cormier would've made fight nerds go nuts, but now it's just some... dude. If he, the dude, wins, everyone will be all "I KNEW DC WASN'T AS GOOD AS HE THOUGHT HE WAS, HE HAS NO CHANCE VS JON JONES" and blah blah blah.
On the plus side, this'll make it easier to get a seat at the bar. Sometimes it's fun when it's packed, because everyone is drunk and freaking out whenever anything happens, but I hate standing around when I'm fawkin' hawngry.

I never minded it. I don't really like Joe Rogan personally, because he talks up certain fighters and talks down other ones very subtly, like "But so-and-so is REALLY dangerous on the ground", and the person on the ground is getting their face pounded. Yeah, Joe... so dangerous. Or "So-and-so is dangerous on their feet, they can knock you out at any time." and that person is getting their face turned into hamburger meat. Okay, so complimenting people isn't bad, but it's when he takes away something like, say, someone hurts their foot and can't kick, and so Joe Rogan says "His cardio just looks bad, and he needs to keep up the pressure and throw some kicks, which I don't know if he can do because kicks are not really a part of his arsenal.." ARG, cmon.
I put 500 kr on McMann. The odds were simply too skewed to ignore. I agree Ronda is the favorite to win, but not by THAT much. Also put 500 kr on Maia the way he suffocated the suffocater himself Jon Fitch was very impressive. I see him hanging on to Rory like a fucking boa constrictor for 3 rounds.

To be honest, I cant stand when fat out of shape journalists talk about the art of fighting like self proclaimed experts. but they were more talking about the antics and the drama, which made it work. What I would really like is having retired fighters or hall of famers talk about the fights. god knows the UFC have a lot of em now.

Yeah, of course, I don't need them analyzing the fights or anything like that, but rather, just remind us all who showcased fighters beat paired with highlight/clips of the fight. I think John Morgan from USA Today is pretty knowledgeable when it comes to the sport. I thought he was with MMAJunkie though, but I guess he doesn't work for them anymore, just like how Jeremy Botter went from Bleacher Reports to CNN (dafuq?).
Ugh, this card wouldn't be so bad except they are selling it as a PPV. I hope it bombs, so Dana can get off his "Ronda is the biggest star in the UFC" horse. She might be popular, but it's only because the UFC is putting her out there...every where. No one gives enough of a crap to buy a ppv card with her headlining, but I guess we will see. The Olympian/Olympian might get some guys because it's the Olympics...
The Maia/Rory fight should be a pretty fun scrap, but I think Maia controls it and ends up with a submission by RNC or something. And I'm excited to see "Wonderboy" Thompson fight again...he has a pretty sweet Karate style, and a lot of cool kicks. But yeah, pretty blah card.

Yeah I wouldn't complain so much if it wasn't a PPV card! ---

Yeah nice timing by the UFC think tank with the Olympics and all. ;-D Rory looking good to open round 2 come on win me MOAR monies.
Maia puts on a grappling clinic in rnd1...gasses...First could coulda been 10-8 Maia, second could have been 10-8 Rory. Kinda crazy. Good win for Rory.
edit: could be a quick night for Cummins. Should be fun
Man, Cummins was in a win/win situation even if he lost. DC HAD to win like this, otherwise his hype train was derailed. Cummins gets a contract either way for stepping up, DC continues on. Feel bad for the people who bought this PPV. Hopefully McMann take this fucking belt.

DEM WOLF TICKETS. What a great term :D
If the Rousey/McMann fight turns out okay, its actually been a pretty enjoyable card. Yeah, the DC fight was overhyped/overmatched...but I've enjoyed this card way more than the last couple cards.

I think it's only been a good card because every card this year has been a snooze fest haha
I'm actually really excited for this Rousey/McMann fight though. I watched some of McMann olympic matches and she's a beast, man.
Eh, she was hurt...but that was a bullshit stoppage. That was easy to recover from, super early in the fight still. Fuck this year of fights sucks so far.
On February 23 2014 14:00 GogoKodo wrote: Maybe slightly early but it's up to the fighter to not just take multiple shots to the face without any kind of defense.
She took 1 glancing, 1 "to the face" and Herb was stepping in on the 3rd :\
I'm not understanding all hate, all the fights were at least interesting. McMann and Rousey were going at it before she took a hard liver shot, shit happens... it's a fight.
Note to myself: Never bet against Ronda Rousey no matter the odds. Second note to myself: If a fighter looks like hell and tired as fuck during the weigh ins, don't bet on him (Maia)
Yeah the first link didnt work for me either...UFC's twitter sent this one out and its working.
Saw on twitter that apparently Dana does want a Cyborg/Rousey fight but wants her to make 135 a few times before it or something. No idea if this is true. Might be the only one who could take Rousey, otherwise I see her title reign being very long.
Missed this event, saw the gifs of the finishes... I'd have to say, the number of finishes must've been a change of pace from the last two cards with 11 and 10 decisions.
Again, we still have about 4 more UFC events in the next 4 weeks, GET PUMPED!
You didn't miss much, but Mike Pyle had a good fight (even though I hate his mullet) and Jessica Eye got her ass handed to her by Alexis Davis. That win over Sarah Kaufman was bullshit, and Eye doesn't belong in the top 5, and tonight just showed that.
I was really disappointed by the main events. Daniel Cormier vs Patrick Cummins looked like an episode of Bully Beatdown, and I was hoping for a more epic fight between Ronda Rousey and Sara McMann, and McMann was hitting Rousey pretty hard at the beginning of the round and then knees happened and gg... whaaa? Well, I know knees hurt and can finish fights with one hit, but... I guess I was hoping for more.

Cheers. Interesting to hear the opinions on the stoppages after ppl have reviewed the footage. The ref really does have the best view in the house. Many ppl get carried away with backseat refereeing imo.
Then why let anyone recover ever...just call the fight as soon as they are dazed. I've watched guys get knocked out cold, wake up from the impact of hitting the mat, grab for a single leg, and eat repeated punches for 30+ seconds and sometimes it is stopped and sometimes they let it go and we listen to Rogan scream praise about a dudes recovery time. Herb let Pyle beat on Waldburger until he was nearly dead, but saved McMann pretty much instantly because she drops from a well placed knee? Seems silly. It's the inconsistency that pisses people off.
I'm not denying she wasn't hurt, but you have to give a fighter time to recover. She was hit with ONE follow up punch. ONE. She was working to defend herself and get back to her feet by the time the 3rd punch was coming/Herb was jumping in. I'm not even upset because I wanted McMann to win, I'm upset because they came out to scrap and they were well on their way to saving that card but we, as fans, got robbed.

I do agree that consistency is the key, and I'm not even disagreeing with your point. Yeah, she should've been given time to at least "have a shot" at recovering, in either attempting to go for a single leg or getting up a second or two after doubling over. Didn't see the Waldburger/Pyle fight, but again, similar to decisions and the judging, consistency is the key.
I am going to say if Rousey lets Cyborg punch her in the face like she let McMann hit her she will be going to sleep. Rousey took some solid shots (gave a couple, too).

When Mcmann falls she gets punched and while on all fours mcmann taps out on ronda's thigh.
pyle vs waldberger - i liked this fight. never seen either of these fighters before, but the fight was dynamic and fun to watch. the tko should've been stopped earlier though. man it was painful to watch him get beat on like that.
rory vs demian - another good fight. i saw some people complaining about rory getting hit by demian's punches even though demian's striking isn't that good, but it seemed like rory was putting more of his focus on being ready to defend takedowns, rather than focusing on head movement. a takedown would be more devastating than getting hit a few times, so if rory had to choose, i think he's right to devote his energy to takedown defense.
dc vs pat - lol what a stomp. they really needed to interview pat after the fight.
rousey vs mcmann - herb should not have stopped it that early; same as barao vs faber. really, give her a chance to recover. it's extremely difficult to make the right calls in the heat of the moment where a second or two can make a huge difference, but in retrospect, it really does look like the wrong call.

I'm a bit late, but holy shit no, she didnt tap, she was going for the leg.
Herb was horrible that night, absolutely horrible.
A terribly late stoppage in the Pyle/TJ fight, and then a ridiculously fast stoppage in the title fight.
McMann was fine, she just got dropped briefly and was getting back up. Ronda's GnP was pathetic. You don't stop fights when someone gets dropped, even boxing requires 3 before a finish.
Dana is happy though, his excessively promoted bitch of a womens bw champion continues on. I'd love to see the buyrate for this card though, cause for Dana to call her the biggest current UFC draw is stupid - but calling her the biggest star in the UFC of all time. Well... that's Dana for you. If she quits next week and goes to movies permanently, he'll say she was lucky in all her fights and she was never tested against strong opposition.
