Terrible officiating in this OT, first boarding then slashing Well, atleast they were consistent. I thought it was resonably officiated, some blatant non-calls on both sides, but they were consistent, so I can't fault them too much. I'd say that it kind of worked out in Finlands favor, a lot of holds in this game would have been penalties in the NHL. I don't know i think it favored Canada. Why do you say that? Canada had the puck all game (82% possession) and each team only had 1 powerplay. Typically the team that possesses the puck gets way more PP's because you only take penalties when you dont have the puck. If they called the game by the book there is no way the Finns keep guys like 222lb Jamie Benn from taking a puck to the net. They put the whistles away in the first. Fair enough. Both teams adjusted to the fact. Anyway, my point was Canada would have liked a more whistle heavy game, we have vastly superior special teams. I never said the refs were biased. Do you think Finland would have liked it if both teams had 5 PPs instead of just 1? I just said it for the lolz. Kinda funny how you start raging over my comment.

They are so extremely well coached and Finnish players always seem to be some of the intelligent and responsible on the planet. Call me biased for having grown up cheering for Jari Kurri, bit I love Finns. And the Oilers have never won shit without a Finn on the roster. To the people insulting the Finn's style of play, what do you expect? It would be suicide to go power vs. power against an all-star tram like Canada so they did what any intelligent team would do and limited quality chances while waiting for their own. And they did it so well - I could have a horrific table-saw accident and still count the mistakes they made on my zero remaining fingers. Thats not true, they made a huge mistake in the first period, Sharp made a beauty pass to the late man coming in hit him right in the slot in prime shooting position... and that skater was Kunitz. Haha, unfortunately I watch the Oilers and that's considered a 'normal defensive play' by our metric ![]()

Damien Cox covers the topic nicely on 1 of Canada's few remaining independent news sources. http://www.chatsports.com/toronto-raptors/a/Mens-Olympic-hockey-tournament-simply-too-close-to-call-Cox-0-9314421

Czech-Slovaks get to play for the privilege to be destroyed by America. Hiller vs all of Canada and then we see Canada vs. USA, the most dynamic and exciting match...in the semi finals so one of the two best teams at this tournament gets 0 shot at gold. Terrible tournament design. On the other side of the bracket, Russia lucks out to miss the two toughest teams and runs into Finland, the weakest of the top 4 teams. How convenient for them. Finland will turtle the way that they did against Canada but maybe Ovechkin and Malkin will feel some shame and actually step up big. Sweden should coast through Austria/Slovenia, maybe even rest a bunch of their players? Then Sweden should eliminate Russia handily and then the Americans will finish what they started and destroy them in the Bronze medal game. Without Sedin and Zettterberg and with just a so-so Lundquist there is nothing that the Swedes can do to stop Canada. Chris Kunitz becomes the worst skilled gold medal winner in human history.

Name a tournament in any team sports where such a thing can't happen. Apart from pure full round robin tournaments.

Group stage is over. As expected the Swedish team came out first. They are still trying to get their team together properly as they only really managed to shine in the game versus the Czech. It is plausible though that they were chilling versus the Swiss and especially versus Lithuania. I have to be honest and state that I'm a bit disappointed so far. But I would have been more disappointed if we had actually dropped points. Austria - Slovenia next. That should be a very easy first game on the was to the finals. I don't think USA and Canada are good enough to stop us from taking the gold.

Chris Kunitz becomes the worst skilled gold medal winner in human history. thanks for your analysis and the link. it has some merit. however, the event design can never be high quality because the teams are too closely matched for a BO1 to mean anything. what is needed are BO7s to determine the better team. But, that will never happen. If Belarus can beat Sweden and 1980 USA can beat 1980 USSR then really anything can happen. Switzerland beat Canada in 2006. and if Sweden can lose to Belarus... well.. they can lose to anyone. the winner of Slovakia/Czech Republic could upset the USA. On the WOmen's side..i think the IOC or IIHF or whoever it was .. designed a fantastic structure. if i were to grade them i'd say this: Women's Tourney Structure for 2014: A+++ Men's Tourney Structure for 2014: B Over all the women's event has been a masterpiece.. the men's event has been good to great. Russia or Vladamir Putin or IOC or IIHF or whoever made this happen.. take a bow sir (or ma'am), because you've given every hard core hockey fan a real treat.
