What the heck do you mean not as effective? Over the last 4 years Ovechkin is averaging about 34 goals and 85 points. This year alone he is 40G/20A in 55GP. Assuming he maintains this pace he will have 59G/38A at seasons end. That would be a career high in goals and 4th highest point total.
The guy hasn't lost a step and his terrible +/- is attributed to the fact that he has 22 other players helping him suck at defense.
Talking about the playoffs, and couple is two, not four.

Then how come his +/- is the worst on his team by like 20?
He's -17. Next up is -10. little less then 20 Top 5 Capitals ice time leaders for the power play:
Ovechkin: 288:53
Backstrom: 226:39
Brouwer: 211:02
Carlson: 185:01
Johansson: 184:49
Ovechkin spends alot of time on the power play(over a whole game in time more). So he is on the ice for most of Washingtons PP goals. PP goals do not effect +/-
yes but if every night you score a goal and end -2, at the end of the day you are a liability. Thats why guys like Datsyuk or Crosby are so good, because they excel in so many areas of the game. Im not bitching on Ovechkin here because scoring goals is the hardest part of the game and hes the best one at it. But the atrocious +/- he has shows there are things he doesnt want to do every night ( for example, see the disconnected controller gif... ). If he did everything right hed be OP anyways...
With one troll post this great thread turned into a good ol' "lets bash those russians winning trophies in NHL and taking our salaries". Ovi's +/- sucks because he's horrible at defense (nothing new, was, is and will be) and Caps in general is horrible at defense. Doesn't mean he's not giving it all on the ice and he's bad offensively. Just seeing how other teams play "anti-ovi" is already an indicator of what this guy is. Saying Datsyuk is the only good player left in team Russia is also a joke, i don't think there are a lot of Datsyuks in other national teams. Today he belongs to world-wide hockey treasures so Mr. Sub40APM can as well say, that hockey is dying. Give it a go, what the hell. We have 2 awesome games coming up today! PS.Thanks to some guys here staying cool!

hockey debates about good topics are fun.. this guy is just so over the top its silly.
no Conn Smythe Trophy is a fluke... ever.. the Stanley Cup playoffs are an all out hockey war... and every Conn Smythe trophy winner deserves their name engraved on the base of that trophy.
like i said in my post... you damn better believe Jonathan Quick knows that Ovechkin is dangerous as fuck...
every inch a goalie moves out of his crease is a huge risk. for fuck sakes.... QUick looked like fucking Gump Worseley in 1970 coming out of his net... talk about balls.
a couple of times he came 10 feet out of the net to challenge Ovechkin.
Ovechkin demands that level of risk because of what an amazing shooter he is... and every goalie in the NHL knows it.
Team Canada has decided to sit the Current Norris Trophy winner (P.K Subban) and the NHL's leading scorer(Martin St. Louis) in favor of Patrick Sharp and Dan Hamhius. Carey Price gets the nod in net.
Not gonna lie. These choices don't make any sense...
There are good reasons for Subban's banishment to the press box for the Finland game.
i think a certain someone warned us Subban would wind up in the press box because of his poor decision making and inability to discipline himself into the 40 second shift change that Babcock demands.
the Austrian breakaway was 100% Subban's fault, which is why he suicided himself into the boards trying to stop it.
and on 2 occasions Subban got the "get the fuck off the ice" from the new defensemen that arrived on the ice.

40 second shift law Babcock is imposing is stupid. These guys are the best conditioned athletes in these games. They can play longer then that and not tire out over the compact tourneys schedule. It's even dumber when you factor in defensemen are used to playing shifts of around a minute in the NHL.
In the Austria game they were playing 5 men back defensively. If Canada's defense just stood at the point and let their forwards get out numbered 5 on 3 in the Austrian zone Canada likely doesn't ever score and loses. So the defense moved up, pinched more and went deep in the attacking zone sometimes. That can bite you if you miss the pinch or get caught down low after a turnover but that the risk you are basically forced to take. Yeah it was Subban's fault but I would wager he did exactly what his coach asked him too and it was merely a time that it backfired.
Scratching MSL makes no sense. He was good. The only way this makes sense is if he has a minor injury and they'd rather give him the night off to be ready for the elimination rounds.

you can't relate "good conditioning" with "longer shifts".
from 1970 until now the conditioning of NHL players has constantly improved. and as conditioning has improved "average shift time" has constantly declined.
when Doughty pinched ... it was up to Subban to back off. making any mistake on that pinch either a 1 on 1... or a 2 on 1 at worst.
the clear cut breakaway was Subban's responsibility.. and he knew it. Mike Babcock knew it.. the whole fucking team knew it. another bad decision by Subban. his decision making is bad. all his raw skills are great.
for PK Subban acceleration.. shot power.. shot accuracy ... top skating speed, nimble-ness.. are all fucking great
his decision making is average... right now he is Bryan Mccabe with 23848927 times more talent.
if u have another rational explanation for why Subban is not playing.. i'm all ears.
So there was a short delay of audio trouble were the Rus/Svk game had no commentary at all. I can't say I minded. Was nice not hearing Glen Healy's vocie
the solution for the Russian sluggish start against Slovakia is very short shifts and every player in sprint mode.
how many Americans know where Slovenia is?
LOL

What Russia needs to do is keep making these bad passes and trying to skate in along the boards vs a 5 across the line defense. They will never score this way and my drop dead gorgeous Slovakian friend will be happy with the win
Go Slovakia's boring lame defense and quick transition Go! Make Jacques Lemaire proud!
