I've paid much much more attention to their performances (and things related like MIL's scores) this year than in probably 7 or 8. They've been so aggressively forgettable since the one lightning-in-a-bottle Iverson year, that even appreciating Iggy's game wasn't worth following (more than casually) a team that was clearly plateauing as the 7-8 seed and irrelevant to the broader league. Cuban talked a bit the other day about how the current lottery enables teams to sell hope, something that several of the proposed fixes remove and why that change might not be in the league's best interest. I would totally find that argument to be junk were this 76ers season not shoving the truth of it in my face.

And the second half of this season has put the 3-5 player rankings in flux IMO. We might not know until the end of these playoffs who is right after LBJ and KD. And good stuff on the Spurs here: http://grantland.com/the-triangle/let-them-entertain-you-the-beautiful-late-season-spurs-surge/ You can see why they have some of the most efficient/open shots in the league (something not shown in current statistics when just looking at eFG and TS).

Also Davis's defensive attributes are rarer than Durant's scoring. I disagree. 1. You can afford to have defensive specialists at the PF/Center position because of the general defensive impact they can have. 2. Interior defense can be handled by committee. See Spurs last playoffs vs Lakers and Grizzlies. I think the real question is if you can only have one superstar, what position do you want them as? Recent history has suggested that you want that person to be a large guard or small forward.

Recent history has suggested that you want that person to be a large guard or small forward. I think you are confusing the fact that Lebron and Jordan were amazballs good with the positions they played, as well as the perceptions of their teammates contributions to their successes. Thinking about recent teams, either finals or several seasons of contention, that are strongly (and incorrectly) considered to have been the result of "one superstar", I would think the notables would be something like Dirk's Mavs, Lebron's Cavs, Dwight's Magic, Iverson's 76ers, KG's Twolves, and maybe a year or two for early Duncan and Shaq while Kobe was still mostly just an athlete. I'd be very interested to have you explain the idea that you'd want a single big guard or wing a bit more because I don't see it.
