very strange though.
Right? Get this one, Total Win Shares / 48 minutes - Tony Parker is 91st All-time. T-Mac is 87th.
Also re: Duncan... his Total Wins Shares / 48 min is 11th all time.

I'm sure whenever they make up these crazy stats they just look at the top 10 players and make adjustments until it looks right.

If you're a Detroit Pistons fans dont read the special on the 2003 Draft sitting on ESPN. Save your tears.
Of course, I am laughing my ass off so hard right now.

They showed a clip on ESPN about that draft and a random Detroit fan was at the draft live yelling 'Milicic to Detroit, championship next season YAAAA!'
Then they showed Melo's face when Darko got picked ahead of him, lulz were had.

Will Robinson (Pistons scout, 1976-2003): [Darko] is going to own the game. Own the game. We're going to have to build a new arena. The only thing that could destroy a kid like that is a woman.
...
Ford: It was just a moment when the unknown had eclipsed the known. Many of the younger GMs had this international fever. There was a mania to find the next Dirk. There was a realization by these NBA guys that these Euro players could play. As scouts were bemoaning the state of basketball in the U.S. because of AAU, here are these Euros who were so skilled and had been drilled in all the arts. Scouts were flocking over to Europe. Jerry West was the one voice who was consistently calling me and asking me why Darko was rated so high. I thought he was being xenophobic. He was old school.
West: We did our research. There's no way we would've taken Darko at No. 2.
From Chad Ford’s 2003 Mock Chad Ford, ESPN Insider: He’s the real deal. He’s really one of a kind. He runs the floor, handles the ball, shoots the NBA 3-pointer, plays with his back to the basket, so you can slot him in at the 3, 4 or 5. What sets Darko apart is his toughness in the post. You have to love a guy who has the footwork to spin by an opponent, but still prefers to lower a shoulder and bang. Fact is, Milicic plays in attack-mode at both ends of the floor. The more you push, the more he pushes back. He’s got a great frame. He’ll definitely get stronger. He’ll have no problem holding his own in the post.
I'm still not sure how much was Darko and how much was Brown. Some people are still upset at Brown for handling his development so poorly and the truth of the matter is he absolutely did. Even for a rookie on a good team, Darko got historically little playing time.
http://www.82games.com/pelton16.htm
Once they started calling him the "Human Victory Cigar," his confidence was shot at just 18 years old. Now it's debatable whether young players don't develop well because they don't get playing time or if they don't get playing time because they aren't developing well, but I remember reading a Sheed interview where he said Darko could really play. Same from Big Ben. Maybe just trying to boost his confidence, but there were so many people high on him. And we know Brown had issues with other young players like Delfino.
The other fucking ridiculous thing about that season is that we made the pick because we needed a big man at the time and Tayshaun had just came up huge in the playoffs so we didn't need Melo (plus he'd gotten fat.) The Sheed trade was fantastic, but it turned out there was another big man on the team. Fucking Memo Okur, who became a borderline all-star and would've certainly been a serviceable big man with Sheed and Ben. I don't think they wanted to pay him long term, but he was only making like 8.5m a year.
So to recap, 2005+ Pistons could've been Chauncey, Wade, Rip, Tayshaun, Sheed, Okur, Big Ben, McDyess.
I hate everything.
EDIT: As an aside, I wonder how many people remember just how good McDyess was. The guy was explosive as hell. Shawn Kemp explosive. And a great defender. Then he blew out his knee, and completely re-invents his game to become a great mid-range jump shooter. Maybe a HoFer without the injury. One of my favorite guys of all time. It's a shame the Suns didn't keep him and Kidd together. That would've been an awesome team. He was never a leader-type, but he had the game we all want Blake Griffin to develop. Better defender, rebounder, jump shot and post game.

McDyess is one of my favourite players as well, although I never saw him pre injury, i really liked his game post injury.

Good stuff. Now we'll see if they can move DeAndre for some additional goodness...

Loved McDyess. Terribly underrated and one of my favorite shot blockers. His ability, and timing, to quickly explode to block shots (very little leg bend) was simply amazing.

Might be just me but I think a first rounder would potentially have much more impact than a specific head coach (aside from a certain few, like Pop)

DO WE START SANDBAGING FOR 2014 NOW OR IN OCTOBER?
Sorry I had too

Salary cap is usually the biggest impact when it comes to decisions in the nba

I can't believe the Grizz traded a first round pick (top 1 protected O_O) for 35 year old Otis Thorpe. That pick was cursed from the get-go. =D

Still can't believe the Pistons took Darko based off, seemingly, two workouts alone. Just an epic failure.
|
Hey yo, Darko owned it on NBA 2K6 back then. My secret weapon off the bench when I used the pistons =)
edit: well, until he lost the element of surprise haha.

It's just amazing how they pretty much admit they knew nothing about him but took him based off one impressive workout. That's borderline criminal when you had a lock of a player like Melo on the board. Wade led Marquette on an amazing run too that year (but was certainly an unknown quantity compared to Melo).
They talked themselves into the Pistons. Was Darko supposed to play PF? They already had Big Ben who was clearly their most effective player at the C.
In saying that, you kind of had to feel sorry for the Pistons. If they did take Melo at two we'd probably be laughing at the Nuggs for taking Darko at 3. It's incredible how badly the Raps managed Bosh as an asset in the long run also.
