Monta Ellis has informed the Milwaukee Bucks that he will opt out of the last year of his deal, according to league sources.
Ellis, who had one year, $11 million left on his contract, will become one of the most coveted free agents on the market this summer.
Sources say the Atlanta Hawks, Dallas Mavericks and the Los Angeles Lakers have interest in Ellis, although the Lakers could get Ellis only via an unlikely sign-and-trade deal.
Ellis, who originally signed a six-year, $66 million deal with the Golden State Warriors, is close with Lakers free agent Dwight Howard. The two have long desired to play together.
If Howard cannot achieve his top goal of playing with Chris Paul, teaming up with Ellis may become an option he would strongly consider.
Ellis' goal in signing his original deal was to give him the flexibility to become a free agent in his prime.
The Bucks reportedly had offered Ellis a two-year, $24 million extension earlier this month, but the offer was contingent on him not opting out of the final season of his contract.
Ellis led the Bucks with 19.2 points per game in the regular season, his eighth in the NBA after being drafted by the Warriors 40th overall in 2005.
Who will be dumb enough to pay him?
Well the Lakers could use a back up shooting guard for sure, but offering him anything significant would be beyond stupid on our parts with all of the luxury tax issues we already have for next season, (even assuming Dwight doesn't re-sign)
I hope he isn't leaving Milwakee thinking he'll get better money on any team anywhere near contention because he's nuts if he thinks that.
That said, I think the Bulls could probably use him the most at least the most of teams I can think of with any chance of a title run next year.
NO NOOOOOOOOO WE DON'T WANT HIM
Plus we're close to (over?) the tax and Reinsdorf is a cheapskate, he won't pay it unless it's for a huge star that almost guarantees him a title/millions more in revenue.

Only reason I mentioned you guys is because everyone knows you guys need some more guys that can score the ball which is about the ONLY thing Ellis can really do.
Last year he was 19.2/3.9/6 on 41.6%FG (:r) TS% of 49.3 (:r :r). He's not the blackhole he was at GSW but he's still pretty horrific (when you combine it with his non-existent D).
Monta's an amazingly gifted player with a very low BBIQ. It's a frustrating and unfulfilling combination.

Yeah. If you're not that athletic but have a good BBIQ, at least you can be a coach.

To be fair, he was on the Bucks which has no other (real) options from mid range, and he has been coached by don nelson most of his career, so its not like BBIQ was really stressed there.
I think Monta can ball, and put him on a team with decent coaching like Dallas or Chicago and his efficiency will sky rocket. That being said, I assume he goes to whomever pays him the most and he continues to be a chucker, theres no way he is going to Chicago as would come off the bench there. Dallas is a maybe, but they wont pay him the most in hopes of creating other deals in the future.
I feel sorry for the team that pays Monta more than 11 mil for multiple years. I'm pretty sure Mark Cuban is a big advanced statistics guy so I doubt he'll be coming to my team.
Considering how long he's been in the league...if he hasn't improved his shot selection by now, I doubt he ever will unless something stops him from thinking he's as good as Wade was so he can actually improve. I'd say his best shot would be getting whipped into shape by Pop/Carlisle/Thib or some other team with a good coach/player development staff.

Well i mean, don nelson isnt exactly a stickler for shot selection, and the bucks are terrible offensively, how much of it was his enviroment and how much was him? Its hard to tell. You place him with a thibs, carlisle, adelman and with a second player who can actually ball, rose, dirk, love and youll see his effciency go up, its not like he isnt a career 45 % shooter, he is. Its only been the past few years where curry and he had no one else, or his other guard qas brandon jennings where his % have started to decline.
Of course we wont see him on those teams though, as he (rightfully) should care more about getting paid and moving from milwaukee as soon as possible.
Remember, kids, institutionalized corruption is much better than selective corruption. If you rig one game, everyone notices, but if you just are corrupt in general, then "that's just the way it is."
Well... didn't Joey Crawford ref game 1? The spurs won anyway and got some calls going their way that game too. I guess we'll just see how much Tim Duncan laughs today.

No sir, he reffed game 2.
Crawford isn't the NBA's go-to guy for dubiously officiated games, though. That'd be Mr. Dick Bavetta.
