Subban's agent must be loving that 2-year deal right now. Another good year and he'll be making a lot more money than had Montreal gone for a longer-term contract in the first place rather than a "we'll see if he's actually good..." kind of deal.
Not to say it wasn't a good contract - it was. GMs get constantly burned by rewarding long-term contracts to players based off of a single season. And if they have to pay more in the long run, well, it means they have a good player worth paying for anyways so it's a win-win.
Good for Subban!

I dont get why there arent more performance based contracts. Put in a reasonable floor for someone like Subban at 3 million and then pay him a bonus for both personal stats and team stats that would inflate it up to 5-6 million. Takes care of the motivation and the player definitely ends up earning up to his contributions.

Doing that basically kills a lot playing ability. I believe I saw an RSA on the subject a while ago, very informative. Basically, when you reward good play with money in bonuses, that is bad because it actually makes people do worse, but making people's jobs based on off their performance actually makes people do horrendously, even worse than just the bonus can do. It makes people in general play as if they are trying to survive, rather than win, which is bad for a pro; it can also affect the mental game since that can't be underestimated when it comes to how well a player is playing at any given time. It actually makes motivation become a negative thing and player ends up doing worse than he could be doing.

all contracts are performance based though, there is a reason why Ovechkin or Crosby get paid ~7-10 million a year and some random 4th line pluger gets 500 right? And its not like the elite players dont know that either.
But I would like to see some actual statistics behind player performance in a contract year vs a post-big contract. I honestly feel like in contract year everyone finds an extra gear, but that could just be my own bias looking for that. We could say that the big 3 in Tampa, after they all got their big contracts only St. Louis kept up his level of play while the other two degenerated pretty significantly per-dollar they received.

Somehow I don't think that it is a good idea for Crosby to be taking pucks off of his face yet.

Wow grats dude, I've always wanted to attend ANY playoff game! Must be sick crowd and hype. Enjoy it

well this Islanders-Pens series is hilarious, outside of game one all the games are 4 goals +. Fans must be loving it.
|
This kind of play is why the Pens got raped in the finals in 2008 and barely won in 7 games vs a beat up and injured team in 2009. Team doesn't know how to play quality team defense and when MAF isn't in beast mode they are a sieve.
|
The Pens aren't going anywhere with this kind of consistently horrific defensive and goaltending play.
|
Dat Fluery clutch goaltending.

Unbelievable game tonight for Islanders. Such a good crowd, the calls were whack only negative I got. Cizekas got manhandled in front of a ref and nothing. His goal was the sweetest too

Pesky Sens woop woop.
Habs totally got robbed on this one. :D

forgot how retarded the Sedins are on defense. Hooking Rafi Tores on a partial breakaway when Scneider is squared up to him? Talk about no confidence in Corey Christ.
also, that patented Brad Stuart own goal, enjoy that Shark fans. It cost the Wings a Stanley Cup, it might cost you a playoff series (probably not this one though)

Man fucking Sens are so lucky what is this shit. Sucks right now to be a Habs fan......well I prefer Habs over Sens that is forsure. GG
|
Goddamn it. Stuart is probably concussed. The Canucks are such dirty pieces of shit.

Eh? When did a Stuart own goal cost the Wings a cup?

There were a lot of things that went wrong for the Wings in that 09 series heh. Plus its not like the Pens didn't play well and deserve it (they won game 7 on the road after all).
