welp marc staal may have just had his eye put out by a deflected shot. the slow mo was terrible. it hit him dead in the eye and did this awful kind of rippling effect through his face

This made me stomach rise into my mouth, seeing him flail around on the ice just... ugh. Hope He is going to be okay, but might make some people think about getting visors. The drawbacks of visors are miniscule in comparison to losing sight imo.

A hair off in terms of offensive production is a pretty big understatement. Datsyuk hasn't done better than a point per game since 08-09. Crosby has gotten significantly more in every single season he's played in.

10 under, 3 over, 3 under in his last 3. that's definitely not far off. back when they were both healthy and playing full seasons a few years back (around the time of the det-pit finals), he was coming in in the high 90s to sid's low 100s.

as good as he's been, sid hasnt played anything close to a full season in a while so that makes it hard to really compare because dudes get hot and cold all the time over the course of 82. no doubt he'd be around a ppg or better but it's like those lemeiux-gretzky comaprisons about how mario'd be better if he was healthy—he wasn't. that's the point.

i gottta go track down flaccid's advanced zone starts and qual comp. im almost positive that datsyuk is their go to draw man for the important draws while filupula was given the easy stuff. sid is probalby way more in the offensive zone starts. thought that would be deceptive because it's not that he isn't a capable defender/faceoff guy, but they had Staal for years to eat up those minutes, and now they have Sutter

e: just looked it up but too lazy to screen cap

https://e9b8db0d-a-62cb3a1a-s-sites.googlegroups.com/site/hockeyabstract/testimonials/playerusagecharts2011-12/Player Usage Charts 2011-12.pdf?attachauth=ANoY7cqVFCYT71TAh6oXk-_hjRTgrcV2N2wcZ3PetF4gLPscfguhPc23vx_AWts-QVqAryJbPEbLBXjwcdg1RgbQVreHU5ExKl0QtBlu4v2rxRA1WMtMrvrTamLQwuCYWoy-u3DY-kn2_1em5fyuyMLRhO3erMmlwJRSgriAiEHPVlRLI8UTQMpPBX5Z5Uf8GsOi-eDviHAuXiFsi862Kg6VRLLPrdRnK1ZV7Zkt7fdtKHskqX44EIL8magpubFqXVhScyuH0m8tNcfT9YJ9rny15M3f6YtSda_iOv5MuIxBW8VXdB2l6yw=&attredirects=0

but from the stats, they had roughly the same offensive zone start (55ish%) but Dats played tougher competition (sid was about a .5 vs 1.3 or so for dats). though it should be noted that the Wings were studs as far as possession, 3rd in the league and no one under 54% zone starts, which is pretty nutty.

I think the biggest takeaway from looking at the stats is just how much Jordan Staal fucking owned last year. Dude started in the offesnive zone about 47% of the time, but faced the hardest competition on the team by far (he was commonly out vs the oppsoing 1st; 1.5qualcomp) while still being very positive as far as puck movement. This allowed Malkin, Kunitz and Neal (and to a lesser extent, Sid when he came back) to start 65% of the damn time on offense, against second rate competition (about a .3)

advanced stats are fun

Yeah, as I said, in 08-09 Datsyuk was in the high 90's. Since then, he hasn't come close to those numbers, and is more a PPG player. While Crosby hasn't played a full season since then, he's had an even better pace over shorter seasons, and he's clearly capable of putting up similar numbers again over a full season.

As for players getting hot and cold over a full season - not really the case for Crosby. A cold streak for Crosby is not getting a point for 2 games. While he won't necessarily hit 120 points in a season, there's NO way he's getting under 100 if he stays healthy.

Avoided McLaren but took on Orr, ok. And Dave is an AHL'er (like half out team this year...) who wanted to prove something, guess he didn't quite realize the jump to the NHL was that big. McLaren was a class act about it, though. That look after the fight, no pride, just concern, I was impressed.

Well, as an Oilers fan I'm officially already looking forward to the draft. I wonder who we will select with our lottery pick?

This is Islanders North. The most incompetently managed team outside of Long Island. As fun as it has been to watch a shitty team play shitty hockey for the last decade, it's going to be even worse to watch them squander actual opportunity in favor of brain-dead asshattery.

What has the Edmonton Brain-Trust accomplished in the last 6 years outside of stepping to the podium and saying "with the first overall selection, the Edmonton Oilers select.." Compare this to a team like Montreal who saw where the roster needed improvement, made intelligent trades, and improved the team immediately. They were especially brilliant in their handling of Subban - not opening the cheque-book immediately, but rather putting the guy in a position to prove he can perform consistently before making it rain. Steve Tambellini in Edmonton is the kind of guy who could flip a coin, see it come up heads, then assume it will always come up heads. And then sign that coin to a 10M contract based on the fact it will always be heads. And then buy it out after a year when it comes up tails. Fuuuuuuuuuuck.

This comes up because there are serious rumblings that the Oilers plan to buy-out Shawn Horcoff. Does he earn a salary above his abilities? Sure. But are the Oilers terrible without him and no one else on the roster reproduces his skill set? Also yes. They are a far worse team without him and to even consider that they would drop him without having a replacement available is absolutely mind-boggling. So par for the course then.

They were a bad team for most of the season, made the playoffs thanks to Vancouver shitting the bed, and then fought outside of their weight class because of deadline trades, a hot goaltender, playing the trap, and a single season of the most dominant defenseman that has ever played in the city.

The over-achievement of that team during a short period of time is a huge reason why the team is currently in such a mess. They thought that roster was actually that good.

edit: And then they lost to Carolina - probably the shittiest team to ever win a Stanley Cup.

Detroit was the best team in the NHL by a wide margin and got beat clean in a 4 out of 7. Edmonton ate em.

they won 15 playoffs games against teams like Detroit , Anaheim ( who won the cup the next year) and Carolina ( SC Champ).

Edmonton was full value for their 2006 results.

The Leafs have not gone that far since 1967 when their were only 6 teams in the league. So its hard to listen to Edmonton fans whine.

Carolina was solid and deserved to win the cup... just as they deserved their finals appeared 4 years earlier. The year they went to the finals they destroyed the Leafs who had a way better goalie.
All Carolina needed was a goalie and when they got one they won it all.

you're talkin' about how great Pronger played and now he is gone... Leafs are talkin' about how great it was when Eddie Shack took the Leafs to the finals...

As a Detroit fan that season still stings. But hey they played really good that postseason and went on a run it happens. Probably would of won it all if they Roloson didn't get hurt.

Boston as a non-Atlantic team, when has that ever happened in sports? I've never heard of it. The damn city is on the Atlantic ocean. XD

Maybe I'm bitching because I liked them being able to beat up on canadians as of late.

Can the Canucks just start fucking winning please, we are so lucky that our division is probably the worst in the league right now.

EDIT: Sorry, Southeast gives us a run for the worst division in the league.
