By the time I get home I feel fine again, but sometimes I notice pain at work after stacking a bunch of chairs, though it's very mild. Is this just pain because my back is weak and it's normal muscle pain? Could it be pain due to sitting a lot through the day and poor posture while driving or at work? And of course the last option is that it could be due to poor form but I'm pretty confident in my squat form, though I'll try to take a video when I can of that and my deadlift. From what you are saying it seems its just tight muscles (thoracolumbar fascia)? If it hurts on the sides of the spine its a muscle thing most likely, I'd be wary if only one side hurts as it can indicate some sort of imbalance. If it hurts in the middle (i,e, the spine itself) I'd be very careful.

But then we're talking a choice between pistol's with a large assist versus step up's without one, and in terms of shoring up stability, I'd rather my clients start with the easier exercise in which they require no assistance than the one that requires that they effectively cheat in order to make it work, particularly since stability and leg imbalance are already issues.

@najda, I've got the same problem because my routine suddenly has a TON more upper body pulling volume than I'm used to. Weak rhomboids, weak postural mid-back muscles. It's getting better with time. Try to hit it with a lax ball/foam roller. If you think it's because you don't hit those muscles enough, give face pulls with a scapular retraction before the pull a try, or chest-supported DB rows (lying chest-down on an incline bench with a DB in both hands, so you can't swing your back.) If you think it's a too much volume thing, just take the usual rest precautions and then get back at it as soon as you feel up to it.

Pistol squats are good, don't get me wrong, but I've seen more than a few people fall over and really fuck themselves up on lunges/pistols when they probably shoulda been grinding out something less risky first. How do you fall over and fuck yourself up with pistol squats? Unloaded and you hurt yourself? As to the OP on this issue, you probably are just having mobility issues, not stability issues. Can't really tell without a video.
