Wanted to share a diet story with you guys. I was getting unhappy with my bodyfat % after months of neglect where I thought I was being smarter than I really was. The result was a chunk of fat gain without much muscle accompanying it to speak of. I was really lean last summer and I hoped to get some of that back. I love the feeling of being lean, and I love bodyweight exercises so this is quite important for me in my daily routine Went on a leangains-style diet and this is how I looked at the 4 week mark.

Starting bodyweight was a bloated ~75.5kg

Bodyweight in this shot was around ~71kg with much lower water levels.

These 4 weeks were solid, 100% compliance and I didn't lose any strength. The total diet went on for 3 more weeks, but these were largely unsuccessful due to waning motivation. I lost a bit of strength over those 3 additional weeks, and only perhaps another true kilo of fat.

I'm back to bulking up and my bodyweight is approxmiately 2.5-3kg lighter when I am bloated now which is my best reading of how much actual fat was lost. Overall I was happy with the result but I left room for improvement. I think in the future I will keep diet stints to 3-4 weeks max inbetween leanbulk cycles, every extra week on top of that is so brutal mentally :/

Looks like good progress for such a short time. Fat melts right off me too when I try leangains style eating, with the macro partitioning and proper meal timing. remember though, that its recommended you take 1-2 weeks of "maintenance" or recomp calories (+/-10-20%) in between bulking and cutting and between cutting and bulking to let your hormone and energy levels normalize. just something to think about.

edit: no OSL spoilers please, I won't see it until I get done at work and then the gym, like 8 hours from now . BW community usually pretty good about spoilers, sc2 community pretty awful.

yeah, usually I get impatient and go straight from dieting to bulking. the result is a week of bloat mayhem, not sure if i really make any gains that week. should really transition more gradual that way. it's much easier going from bulking straight to dieting, the excess kcal feeling can carry you like a week or two before the fatigue sets in

New shoes are fucking awesome. Squats form is so much more natural while I'm wearing them. Only have to think about one thing at a time, like "lead with the chest" or "knees out" rather than "weight on heels, spread the floor, open up your hips, sit into it, bring that chest up, are you deep enough, hips forward, don't lean in, fuck where are your knees, don't bounce, don't overbalance, can you get the next one, fuck fuck fuck"

Brought a massive deload (20% from my already deloaded weight of 225) which is only 20 lbs more than my front squat, and I'm going to work up in a 5x5 linear progression from here. I can't decide how often I'll be able to squat exactly - I still want to focus more on my deadlift, because I think I can bring that back up to where it was more quickly, and then hit that 405 goal that I was pushing for.

I think I can deadlift 2x/week, back squat once and Front squat once. Like, Saturday deadlifts 1x5 @ 45/55/65% 1rm, then triples to a max for the day. Monday front squat 5x3, linear progression. Tuesday deadlift to a top set of five, and thursday back squat, 5x5 linear progression. Hopefully that gets me back on track... and I can start doing technique work for C&J/Snatch in the meantime (broomstick or bar only, wed/fri along with my abs + cardio). Expect videos to critique of that soon, and PR vids of deadlift and squat once they hit 3 and 4 plates each!

Today:
Squat 1x3 75, 95, 115, 135, 2F-1 155kg - left hamstring still bothering me at warmup.
BP 1x5 47.5, 57.5, 67.5, 77.5, 5x2 95kg - couldn't get triples, so I decided to just do doubles with 2 extra sets instead.
Pull ups 1x6 bw+15, 1x5 bw+17.5, 1x3 bw+25kg - Decided to do pull ups on Sunday instead of chin ups. All the sets were fairly easy, so I'm gonna up the weight by 5-10kg next week.
L pull ups - 3x5

Okay so an update from Cambium~

I think I've been away from this sub-forum for about half a year now.

I lived in NYC for just under 4 months starting February. Gyms were a lot more accessible in NY as there were gyms both at my workplace and at my hotel. The hotel was fucking awesome as it actually had a proper gym, with benches and squat racks, and Russian coaches, one of whom (he used to coach the olympic team or so he claimed) gave me great pointers on my front squats. I ended up working out probably four times a week, mostly revolving around mixing light, medium and heavy back squats and front squats, along with benches, presses, rows, and pull-/chin-ups as more or less compliments. I increased the frequency because I couldn't really do DLs and cleans given the gym conditions, and my body reacted rather well to this random routine. I also ran quite a bit while I was in NY, mostly in central park as I was really close; it was very much overrated, but there isn't really any other close places for me to do my jogging. I also did rock climbing for a bit, and I actually really liked it, and I'm going to try to continue doing that in Tokyo even though it's outrageously expensive here (like everything else).

Food was absolutely brutal in NY however. Breakfast mostly consisted of Starbucks coffee and yogurt, which was okay I guess. Lunch was the worst meal ever, as there aren't that many places in Midtown that are healthy (paleo was pretty much out of the question), and most of my coworkers wanted repeated eat the garbage they labelled as "Japanese food". I tried to eat by myself sometimes and went for buffets (paying by weight) and had decent servings of meats and fish. Ingredients in America in general I found to be very bland, and the food served was usually over-seasoned (to compensate for the lack of flavours in the actual ingredients) and greasy. Dinners we usually ate take out together, half the time salad, the other half probably Indian (by popular demand). I also had another place in Jersey City with a kitchen, and I went back on weekends just so that I didn't have to eat out; I would cook some organic meat and veggies, and feel decent about my health. Also, running along the pier is pretty awesome in Jersey City.

I probably gained around 10 lbs in NY (from 173 to 183, roughly), which was actually not that bad, as it was winter, and I always wanted to bulk a little bit. I had no doubts that I would lose 10 lbs very quickly after I return to Japan.

I came back to Tokyo at the very end of May, been here for roughly two months now, and everything felt great. I tried to stuff myself in the first month to prevent rapid weight loss, and it worked to some degree, and I only lost three pounds. Work really picked up, and I was pretty occupied with a bunch of other things, so I picked up jogging and some yoga, and reduced my weightlifting sessions to roughly 2 times a week (sometimes three if I felt really energetic), and I don't feel too bad about it.

Then came summer, and I decided to cut, I basically kept my diet the same, but stopped drinking 1-2 L of milk a day, and it's worked out rather well I'd say. I'm now at 170 lb, and I'll probably continue doing this until 165-ish, and then prepare to bulk again in the fall.

I just training against last wednesday. I have had serious DOMS since then and I am going to the gym again tomorrow. Can't remember when I was last this sore. For everyone getting back from vacation, ramp up slowly and do the warmup sets. I just went back in the gym after 1,5 months of vacation and did 8 sets of 70 kg and it completely destroyed my unconditioned body.

Creatine and fishoil along with some muscle relaxing pills. Any more ideas for getting my muscles to stop complaining? I've been getting lots of sleep so it ain't that.

I know woman are woman, by fixing this shit I mean see if it can be fixed and stop acting like a little bitch (which I have done today, and expect to keep doing in the future). I'm not talking about apologizing, beggin or other stuff, as that obv defeats the purpose of stoping to act like a bitch. As I said, I'm ready to move on but still wanna give it a try before doing so.
