I ran a 41:20 on a hilly 10km course. I aimed for sub 40 but the hills got me on the third lap. I passed the 8km
Mark with 32:30 and was still in good shape but on the final climb, I lost too much time. Now, I want to run a flat 10km and I think that on a good day, I can do it.

I have rested my leg for a week now... I haven't noticed problems with it.

I think I will try doing some 3 mph uphill walking on the treadmill tomorrow, and not jog until the end of the week. The moment I sense a problem I will stop, if it happens.

I really hope I'm over this.

I didn't watch it, but was the wind not a big issue? It's been windy as shit all day today.

Last mile and a half or so.

What makes this even more interesting is that Bekele fell WAY back about 4-5 miles into the race, probably as far as 60m, and worked his way back up.

+ Show Spoiler +
Apparently Bekele intentionally fell off the pace so that Haile and Mo would push a little more, and they wouldn't run in a big pack all waiting for each other to make a move. Crazy!

5k time down to 28:30 and falling steadily. It is a good feeling to always be running better every time.

Currently I have a major problem with pacing my second mile. For example, my splits for the 5k today were 9:00, 10:00, and 9:00. Is this a common thing? I suppose the answer is just, slow down a little bit at the start?

Good to hear. It takes practice to pace well. This is something you can improve during easy runs and workouts if you wear a watch and know mile markers. However, I have a different suggestion as to what might be the problem. But don't discount pacing and practicing it for what I'm going to say. And maybe the issue is a little of both things I mention.

In my experience the pacing in the 2/3 of a distance race is more of an effort aspect than a pacing one. It's less of a "start a little slower" thing and more of a "keep your head in the race" thing. Your body is probably more capable than you realize to push the second mile of a 5k and you just have to be aware of it. This is generally the hardest part of the race where most people fall off pace. This is why many people are able to run a faster third mile than second because they know they are almost done and can take the pain for a little bit longer because the end is in sight. You're far enough into it where you are physically fatigued and still saving some before you get to the last mile. Challenge yourself to push the second mile and trust you have the heart to complete the last mile. What you do in the 2/3 of a distance race usually determines how fast you will run overall because of what I described.

. Most comfortable shorts I've ever worn in my life. It's like my manly bits are being wrapped in silk and held up by forest nymphs.

It may seem like an unnecessary bump as it's the end of summer and tights season is coming up, but I got them for 22USD and the price fluctuates a ton, if you see em on sale and could use a pair, I highly suggest you try them out, I'm sad I just bought one.

And the Brazzers pic is hysterical.

Oh that brings up a good question... guys how do you recommend running outside in cold weather? In a few weeks/months I will need to start doing this and it will be too cold for shorts.

Underarmour long sleeve tops are always toasty. Sometimes too toasty. For easy runs and warmups I like running pants and for workouts or races if it's too cold for shorts I go for tights. It's best to dress in clothes that won't weight much. I don't even like running in sweatshirts unless it's just a warmup because they seem bulky.

When running in the winter I always aim to be a little chilly for the first 5 minutes or so because if you're too warm in the beginning before you really get going you will be too hot shortly. I don't like having to be too hot during the run. Dressing in layers to take off can work if you have somewhere convenient to drop it off but I generally find it a pain.

You will have to use trial and error while noting different temperature ranges to see what works best for you.

Don't wear too much. Just make sure you get inside fast enough after the run and change your wet clothes. My rule of thumb is to dress like i would when it's 10°C (no idea about Fahrenheit) warmer and I'm just taking a walk.

I'm already running with trousers at my easy and long runs. It's 13°C (55°F?) here but I don't wear anything warm at my upper body yet, only a long sleeve shirt and no underwear. I'll switch to a warmer jacket when it gets really cold and combine the long sleeve with the jacket when it starts freezing. I stick with jogging trousers only throughout the winter though. When I feel I need them I'm taking thin gloves with me. My bandana will be enough to warm my ears for now but I'm going to switch to a cap (one that I only wear for running) eventually and use a bandana to protect my neck.

I'd suggest layering when it gets cold enough. Depending on how long you run I'd always go with a light (key: LIGHT!) long sleeve shirt and a wicking t shirt on underneath. That way I can either switch to my t shirt or take it off and keep my long sleeve shirt on. Never forget your hands and ears though.

Some mornings I just go out in tights and a running t as long as I have an ear-warmer (is that what they're called?) and gloves. IMO hats are too fucking hot if it's anything but a warmup run. And I completely agree Air, it's way too heavy to run in sweatpants/sweatshirts. It's not the 80's and sweating no longer is doted to be conducive to fat loss lol. Don't burn yourself up just try out a few different outfits in similar conditions until you find something that works. And if you're going to be wearing shorts over your tights, go for something light that doesn't grip your waist too hard.

I run in shorts until its colder than -4 celcius, and I dont run in colder than -20c .. anything in between its loose running pants + long sleeve light running jacket and a tshirt .. lightweight gloves and a toque. Usually it doesn't matter if its cold, its the wind that will hurt you. Also I might look into getting a belclava or however you spell it, to try and do colder weather runs.

Finished my 2nd half marathon this past weekend, switching shoes to a different style probably hurt me in the end, my calves just turned into useless logs at about 15km, but I slogged through it, only walked about 4 minutes combined ( big hill late in the race ), which is much better than my previous attempt. I still have not hit my personal goal mark, but with some muscle work on my calves I don't think it will be much of an issue, at the end of the race I felt like I still had half a tank of gas, wasn't even sweating, was just muscle exhaustion that did me in.

As a contrast to my last race with normal running shoes vs minimus, I went from severe knee pain to no pain at all. My quads were killing me at the end of the first race, and took 3-4 days to return to normal, this race my calves seized up during, but the recovery time was less than 24 hours, infact I felt amazing the next day, where previously I spent the whole day drowning advil in alcohol.

There could be alot of factors that make that change for me, the races were exactly 3 weeks apart, and I was likely more rested for the 2nd race. I went from biking before the first one to playing squash in the time between, which is a much more intense and different workout.

Race days were very similar, same kind of temperature, first race was all concrete path, flat flat flat. second all dirt/gravel + elevation change.

Anyways, its all speculation at this point, but if wearing the minimus shoes without the raised heel can make my knee pain go away, then they are worth every penny I spent on them and more, it has brought some much needed joy to my routine, and I am already looking forward to next years race's, and hope to get a great winter workout schedule together.

Had one of my harder training runs today, marathon is 5 weeks away.

18 miles, ran the second half of it a little faster than my goal marathon pace and man, by the time I was through I was so done. Was hard just standing in the shower at home after, legs were so sore. Capped off a 50 mile week. I think that's the most miles I've run in a week ever. I was sitting at around 35 mpw for about all of August.

I will be very happy to be through with this longer milage stuff, 2+ hour runs are just soooo draining, not only physically but mentally too.

also ran in another 5k last weekend for fun on an airport runway and it was a blast(not every day do you get such a flat fast 5K course in such a cool place) I ran a new 5K PR, 20:35 which I was really happy with. It was really cool being able to basically see everyone at all times, I could still see the leaders about 3 minutes ahead of me as they cut back off the runway when we were 2 miles in, helped me run faster probably.

Intervalls today:

800m @ 3:45
800m @ 3:50
800m @ 3:53
1000m @ 4:53
800m @ 3:52
800m @ 3:57
~90-120 sec rest in between

Since I have now failed 4x during the last year trying to run 5k under 25minutes, I just wanted to do it with intervalls for once, therefore the 1k in the middle. I was pretty satisfied with today, I just need a little more pain tolerance I think.

Yeah, I think so too. Honestly, I just feel that I always hit a shitty day when I tried the last couple of months. and I try without any kind of peaking, so that contributes as well.
One try was 25:03 and I ran without a watch, I am certain if I had known my time after 4k, I would have broken 25minutes easily.

Anyway, I am absolutely sure that I have it in me, probably can go close to 24 as well, so in the end it will be glorious. But as I said, I feel my pain tolerance could be improved... when it hurts at 170bpm, it is not gonna hurt much more at 175bpm... get over it ;-)

After my 2 week break I tried going for a jog today (I started by walking for a couple of minutes to warm up). It was a hair over a mile at a 10 minute per mile pace or slower (didn't time it) so it should have been pretty easy, even accounting for my 2 week break where I didn't exercise much.

I didn't get pain in my hip flexor, but I thought I felt a bit of a weird sensation. I will rest it tomorrow and try again on Wednesday. Also worth noting is that I felt some soreness somewhere near the top of my Achilles tendon even after such an easy jog lol.

I really hope I'm worrying for nothing and my hip flexor is fine.

edit: I think the problem might be caused by the way I sit sometimes... gonna have to try not sitting that way anymore!
