I'm looking at buying: -power rack -bench -bar -around ~350lb in weights As well as some misc items such as dip belt for weighted chins, and rubber mat for the rack. It seems like cheap quality plates are hard to come by in Canada. I'm looking at used Ivankos for $1/lb which seems like the best deal atm. There are some cheaper ones but not by much, maybe $0.60-0.70/lb. I'm going to take a look at a used power rack next weekend for $200. Quality might not be the best but good power racks are so pricey and I figured I can upgrade once I have a bit more spare cash. There's a decent looking bench at a local store for $100 which I'll probably get here. There's a ton of cheap used bars out there as well as some more expensive ones for $250-300. For someone who's not that strong (315x5 DL), is the bar really that important? I also dabble in oly lifting but that'll be on hold until I can build a proper lifting platform. The platform probably won't happen until I move out of my parents' house since I won't be able to get it out of the basement.

It's definitely not a necessity, it's just the one thing missing from the gym I go to that I would find useful (other than bumper plates or a platform). If the rack doesn't have a chip up bar definitely look into getting one.

A decent bar is so much better then those crappy hex-bolt on end bars, and will actually last you.

I'll probably upgrade the rack & bar in a couple of years to Rogue R3/R4 and their Rogue bar. @lyAsakura: I'll be getting a used York bar which should be decent quality. I'll definitely invest in a better bar in a couple of years when I'm stronger. Someone made a point that having a beater bar is good for doing stuff like rack pulls so I think it's a good way to go.

I spent this past weekend surfing. It was fun. I enjoyed it. I'm learning a lot, but I'm not going to give up the gym for it. Of course I'm super sore. What do I need to do to recover properly so that I can still go hard in the gym tomorrow (SS)? Should I be eating everything in sight? Sleeping like a baby? Should I skip tomorrow and just go to the gym Tuesday? Let me know please...

I was thinking about doing the same thing, then I realized a dumbbell set is pretty necessary too. And there's no real cheap way to buy dumbbells. As much as I hate to say it buying the bowflex 1090 dubbells http://www.bowflex.ca/bowflex_home_gyms_ca/accessories/freeweights/prdcd~710000/Bowflex SelectTech 1090 Dumbbells.jsp Is one of the cheapest ways to get yourself a dumbbell set. And even then you're paying $600 just for that. I don't think you can only use a bar if you're serious about lifting in the long term, you really limit yourself a lot. $500 for weights and a bar, $300 for a rack, $150 for a bench, $600 for dumbbells are the main things you need I think. Dunno if it's going to be a worthwhile investment considering my gym membership is only $200 a year and a five minute walk from my house...

I don't see them necessary for anything.

I know you are very into powerlifting, but generally speaking at some point atleast 95% of people who do heavy compound lifts will switch over to something else, just keep that in mind when making your gym, yes you have people like decafchicken and gotunk who don't need them... anyways. I quickly took a look at what there is in Calgary and I see a... http://calgary.kijiji.ca/c-buy-and-sell-sporting-goods-exercise-exercise-equipment-FULL-GYM-SETUP-Squat-Rack-Bench-Weights-Pulleys-etc-W0QQAdIdZ360275308 A pretty decent setup for $750 dollars, which you could probably bring down to $600, which is definitely cheaper than buying everything seperately or new.

Kijiji is great for finding good deals. I'm buying pretty much everything through kijiji atm except for a flat bench and 5 & 10lb plates because I haven't found good ones yet. I'm also going to order a dip belt & a lifting belt but I would've gotten them even if I stayed at my current gym. The home gym will pay for itself in 2 years and most of the items will hold their value pretty well (especially the plates) so it's not like I'm losing money. As for that ad, you should consider that the weight/bar are standard, not olympic so you won't be able to use that much weight.

Definitely not enough room to put it up especially since I need 1.5" of plywood underneath. Hmm this is going to be a challenge. I could always ask Rogue to custom build a 7' rack instead of 7'6"...

I thought maybe taking 2 weeks to deload and work on light weights (maintain muscle and focus on minor tweaks to form), while incorporating some yoga/mobility work might help. Does this sound good? If so what are some good mobility work for the squat and deadlift? Thanks for any answers

Either way I would definitely take a close look at squat/deadlift form.

He can't understand how someone can lift 400lb of weight and thought I was joking. I told him I was seriously going to lift 400 lbs but he thought it was a joke... Yeah going to get out of the house as soon as I can... Pics? =)
