I used to play a lot until I was 13 and had to make a choice between tennis and baseball

I was pretty good, played in a bunch of USTA events and other random tournaments.

I was always a prince guy with my racket, started out with it and was too stubborn to change

i would suggest having a light stringing too, you dont want to be strung more than 60 early on

Used to play a lot too, I started very early and won a few tourneys. I'm playing less and less these days tho.

It's a great sport anyway, fun and (very) technical. On the other hand, it's the kind of sport where you tend to often get little (and sometimes bigger) injuries to your arms, or even your hands.

It's a great great sport

I attribute a lot of my success in baseball to tennis. I had extremely strong and quick wrists. Back in high school I was pretty wiry but I hit the shit out of the ball.

It also is very physically trying, i love the constant action. I would love to start playing again, havent played competitively in 8 years or so. I think i'll take it up this spring again

If you're just starting out any racket will do..
Wilson hypercarbon series are good rackets..
Ive used a Head ti-s5 for a couple of years.. but now i think its too light - bad for service return

Just get a decent/cheap racket with light stringing like balls said. I think playing ping pong a lot helped me. Its much more tiring than you would think. The best part I love about tennis is its 1v1 or 2v2 not like a 11 on 11 soccer match where the outcome is less dependent on you.

I thought tennis was more of an arm sport rather than wrists...

Edit: Nvm... serves...

I think its full body movement in order to play your best. I say you get a trainer to get you on your feet with repeititions and endurance drills. After a good summer of training i think you will be in really good shape for compete and win . I play tennis for the school team and its pretty fun to hit balls around for a class period. I suggest you get a recreational racket from prince, they make some good ones like ThunderCloud. Buying a really good racket right now would be a waste of money and most likely you wont be able to use it to the full potential.

actually tennis is more like

1 - head
2 - legs
....
....
....
3 - back
4 - shoulders
5 - wrists
....
....
....
...
... 6 arms

otherwise I wouldn't be able to hit 100 mph serves (my arms are very thin). Legs and position of the legs represent more than 50% of your tennis.

Agassi's old Head TI Radical is a good racket to get started I strongly recommend it to you, because it's very friendly when hitting from the baseline and with an appropiate string tension say 60-62 pounds, you'll gain fast control of your strokes.

If you buy a shitty racket you'll have plenty of problems controlling the ball thus will get frustrated and maybe abandon the sport.

serve takes time to get

i tried playing last year, i had some trouble hitting forehands (which is kinda weird), for some reason it felt a little unnatural after 6 years of not playing and only playing baseball. the backhand was fine and so was the serve, so i just kinda served and volleyed my way through a few games

If you keep hitting like that you're going to mess up your wrist, though by the sounds of it you don't play much so should be alright. Power's from the body not the arm.

I'd not get a crappy low end racket since you want to be sure all the mistakes are yours, and I'd not get one of the stinking huge head rackets where you just have to stick out your arm and it blasts it. The latter are much too forgiving and while you'll probably see improvements faster it may not mean proper technique.

As long as you have proper technique then it doesn't matter what racket you use but it's getting the technique that's the problem~

I use a $180 racket but it's like 6 years old, one before was $70 and it did just as good a job as this one ^_^

Edit: I love tennis like no other!

Yeah I play tennis, been going at it for about 7 years, I'm currently in Divison 1 out of 10 Divisions in the competition I play. = Best haha </arrogance>

I play Friday night competitions and I also get coaching on Monday. I used to play a lot more, but now It's more relaxed owing to the fact I'm in my final year of school.

This morning I played against 12, 11 and 10 year olds, the kind that will be Professionals one day.

Man they are so good....:O

Haha yeah, I swear...they are about as tall as the net, but they run like machines, hit like machines and they've probably played more than I have in my life, or at least hit more balls.

Yeah.

this is a bit embarassing but when i was 12 i entered this 14-16 tourney (non usta), my coach recommended me and some other people who normally wouldnt be in it because we were good enough, including a girl named crystal.

The matches were 7 game prosets, so im facing crystal first and im thinking hah, i might do pretty well here, i even get to play a girl.

this was no ordinary girl, she was fucking SICK. she made me work for that 3-4 loss. Afterwards i found out she was from australia and her father was a former top 20 player in the world.

About 2 years later when i was a freshman in high school, i decided to check the tennis stuff out in the paper, see if any of the people i had been playing earlier were doing well. Sure enough, there was crystal, first state singles champion of new jersey, rofl.

that loss to her was one of the contributing factors of me choosing baseball over tennis..

I lost on the semifinals of the 1995 Orange bowl, and that made me pick studies instead of a tennis career. Tennis is very very very competitive and if you don't do good you'll get stuck forever.

Today I'm graduated and play tennis in clubs for fun. I don't regret my choice.

Babolat racquets I would say are for players that are more advanced and have more experience, I would go with one of the Head Ti series or Intelligence series.

Yeah I agree, that racket gives lots more spin on the ball which will help you keep it in more often since you are just beginning.

head Ti Radical is a good one to start playing with. Babolat pure drive could also be possible, but the other versions are not really recommendable for beginners. I used to be pretty okay but the last 3 years i didn't have time to train 6 times a week anymore. And yes, i am old! (26 already). Started playing when i was 4, and the racquets have become so advanced compared to when i started, really unbelievable

Depends on how you hit the ball, rackets are relative (when you are a beginer).

No they are not.

I can give a beginner my Wilson Pro Staff 6.0 85 sq.in and he would only hit well one ball out of 10 with forehand.... 0 out of 10 with backhand...

and I can put money on the table for this.

I would suggest a Prince Stealth for beginners. It is a fairly old racket and being so you should get a good price on it.

Bumping this 22 year old thread in honour of Arthur Fery.

A wildcard through to the Wimbledon semi finals for the first time since 2001. That was when Ivanisovic won the whole tournament.

Is this the year for British sports?
