Managed to cram in some time to draft somehow. A new store opened fairly close to my house and I think it's the biggest store in Toronto. It's warehouse size...it's pretty awesome. Anyway their grand opening last weekend means before they set up their schedule they've been running random drafts all weekend. Last weekend was AKH, this weekend was MM2017 and tomorrow KTK (sad I won't get to do that one).
So the plan was, go home from work, drop off stuff for my son to sleep over at my parents and hang out for a bit, then go draft. Only problem was after I got home to get changed my car wouldn't start. Had to call CAA (Canadian equivalent of AAA) and by the time they got there I miraculously was able to start it myself...gotta take it in Tuesday. Bleh.
Got to the store to find they probably wouldn' start another draft since it was getting so late and the only pod had fired not too much earlier. Luckily we managed to convince a bunch of the previous pod members to draft again, and the store to let us do shorter rounds...little did I know that would bite me in the ass.
First pack I opened some hot garbage (I don't even remember what the rare was ) so I FPed Soul Ransom, intending to be some form of UB or Esper. Got passed Flickerwisp and some value stuff so maybe UW? Nope, next pack opened Damnation. Esper it is lol. Guy to my right opened Foil Gifts Ungiven and Craterhoof so yay extra value! Pack three Death's Shadow. Super value draft. Deck is here:
Esper Things
Manabase was super greedy/bad but whatever, I'm out to have fun and play ma bombs.
Round 1 vs Jund
Dude was playing a deck with tons of removal and random creatures n' things.
Game 1 we each played stuff, he removed my stuff, I stole his Desecration Demon, he sacced tokens to hit me and tap it, I blew up his board with Damnation and eventually flickered the 1/1 that makes 4/4 Angels and won.
Game 2 I'm off to a very slow start, get chunked pretty low before I start recovering, then Augur of Bolas for Damnation to fully recover. I'm at 5 life and have a Death's Shadow, he removes it. He has Mudbutton Torchrunner which is kinda scary when you're at 5 life and no board...but then I get to Dinrova Horror it back to his empty hand and make him discard it. He drops Desecration Demon and I crap my pants, but I pull a combo Flickerwisp/Agony Warp block out my ass and survive. I'm about to win but then Broodmate Dragon. At this point we only have 5 minutes left to complete the round. Having done timed single elim before, I know what will happen when time is called: Sudden Death. Basically after 5 turns, the player with the lowest life total loses. I try to play with this in mind but despite me having my 0/8 wall and a creature or two, he plays token makers and is able to chip me down after time on Turn 1 or 2, and i can't bring him down fast enough. My hand was all 5 drops and while I likely would have won the long game, unfortunately I lose in Sudden Death. Super fun games though.
Having pulled more than my fair share of value I'm only slightly disappointed I didn't get to play more, but I'll gladly take the consolation prize of some of the best black cards in the format. Don't think I plan on selling the Damnation at the very least. Love that art. Picked up a full art Languish for a foil Blossoming Defense for art's sake too (I probably lose out on that deal since modern Infect application but whatever, I won't be playing it and don't care to watch it extremely slowly gain value over time).
