While I know birds pretty well I mostly know Eastern birds. Full-species counts are also more overwhelming than what I've done in the past. Even people who've done it for years go through the training again since none of them have done counts in 9 months or so.

On one hand, I can't complain. On the other, I haven't played the usual winner once (10-man pod or he wasn't there), I've had busted rares that I drew a lot each time, and I got pretty lucky with my topdecks every time too. Somehow it doesn't even really feel that good (can't complain about rares 1st pick tho), especially since I ended up more or less aggro thrice (2 were even pretty darn all in) and it felt like drafting (where I got lucky to get the bombs) and building played a bigger role than actually playing out the games, unless mana screw/flood occurs. Plus I can see with my opponents that it's not satisfying for them either to face the steamroller of Bloodrage Brawler or Hooded Brawler sometimes combo'd with Cartouche of Zeal. They probably don't feel like they have much agency when these decks get a good starting hand. Sure, it's the format, and variance happens, and somebody's gotta play fun police when these archetypes are open... I somehow end up half-feeling guilty for the way my success happens, and that it isn't really tied to me deserving it, and it's not very fulfilling, on top of being wary of getting cocky Meh, it's just a game, one shouldn't overthink it like that, even if it comes with social gatherings.

Obviously capitalism gets a lot right but competition is stifled heavily by wealth disparity. For example taking on the Koch brothers in any of their industries is futile as they can eat it out of pocket for the next century before they'd feel any concern. Unless you have mad capital anything a little guy tries to build will get swallowed up by vebture capitalists or crushed by conglomerates. Without wealth rebalancing capitalism becomes essentially an oligarchy. Little guy can't compete, can't buy, pushed out of the economy essentially.

If your opponents don't like playing against first-pick-quality commons, they should probably just quit till Hour of Devastation comes out because they're going to be playing against those a lot. Amonkhet is a 1- and 2-drop format, in case Slither_Blade.dec being a thing at the PT didn't make that apparent.

That's really hard for them to deal with it unless they're holding specific cards, and even then I can react to said cards (if they keep counters I lose a creature but bash for 4 more, if it's impeccable timing and such I could have pump tricks, etc.). Part of me ending with these decks is that I'd rather play them than have to worry about them (P1P1 Nissa I didn't even end up splashing it once I realised R was open). I'd like to draft a decent UG ramp of 5c cartouche deck, a BW zombie or UR spells one, to try a bit of each archetype, but I know these would require me to see very specific cards and so I more or less dodge them by refusing to venture into them unless you get me the payoffs on a plate. Here's a quick comparison between my deck and #4's tonight (his first draft but he watched a ton of them to prep for AKH's "meta"): + Show Spoiler + I'll mention wheels, keep in mind this is a 6-man pod so it played a role (also only 4 regulars here, we had 12 people and mostly regulars but I was surprised the clerk didn't put me in the "full regulars" table). P1P1 Nissa, then Oketra's Attendant, thinking "I'll try to get into at least U or G so worst case I can splash the bomb. I don't want to be UG unless I see early payoffs for the ramp." U was open but mostly shimmerscale drakes—not where I want to be. Then some decent R wheeled from an absurd pack (fp Angel of Sanctions, for my 4th pick it still had G+B cartouches, Electrify, Oketra's Monument, etc.). Pack 2 I have trouble hitting my creature count, esp. no cmc 3, W and B are wide-open but I didn't see them pack 1 so I'm trying to get into RG, and I get rewarded with a P2P3 Insult // Injury and wheeling decent picks (eg. Cartouche of Zeal, which people were criticising as the worst one at the same time). Pack 3 confirmed that R was wide open when I somehow picked Trial of Zeal pick 3 and wheeled both Thresher Lizard and Hooded Brawler. My deck ended up with 2x Magma Spray, 2x R Cartouche, 2x Pathmaker Initiate, 2x Hooded Brawler, Shed Weakness, Bloodrage Brawler, Emberhorn Minotaur, Pursue Glory, Electrify, Insult // Injury... overall 6 2-drops, 4 3-drops, plenty of cmc 1 spells to clear blockers, pump to finish, and a lot of redundancy and ways to apply pressure (considering that I almost never get G cartouches because there are stronger uncommons early, and I tend to need other types of cards badly that appear at the same time in pack 3, Hooded Brawler is my pick for strongest G common that I actually get to play). #4's P1P1 was Archfiend of Ifnir, he cut B pretty well pack 1, P2P1 was Drake Haven, P2P3 I passed him Angler Drake. He also had B cartouche, Ruthless Sniper, a couple 2-3 cmc bounce spells, 8-9 cycling spells total (not fodder like Compelling Argument either: Shimmerscale Drake, Unburden, Wander in Death, etc.) so as long as he could find one of his payoffs relatively quickly he had what I felt was the strongest deck on paper at the table. + Show Spoiler [our matches] + Round 1 against Abzan with 3x Final Reward and Cruel Reality, I pushed a ton of damage early because his removal was too expensive for my curve, and even beat Cruel Reality (with him stabilising at 4) because I was holding Insult // Injury and 3+ cmc creatures, with a Trial of Zeal on board, waiting for either the 6th land or a Cartouche of Zeal to guarantee lethal over 2 turns max. #4 drew because his rares were all in his last 15 cards game 1, then he played Archfiend on curve and crushed game 2 and then ran out of time (opp. was UG ramp beating the cycling dig with Bounty of the Luxa). Round 2 against BR midrange I beat him because again I could push a ton of damage and he misplayed (sent a bat in my sureshot minotaur without noticing it has reach, despite having one on board himself). I misplayed heavily too, trying to be cut with Pursue Glory rather than play it safe with Pathmaker Initiate + Sureshot Minotaur, lost almost all my board for it, still didn't matter. He beat my in friendlies when I got a slow enough start that he could cast Stir the Sands. #4 lost to my round 1 opponent, I assume his payoffs got destroyed by all the exile effects (he had the P1P1 Angel of Sanctions too). Round 3 against the UG ramp he ends stabilising, although he never gets the 6th land for his Behemoth, but after dropping him super low with EoT Electrify a blocker, Hooded Brawler + Cartouche of Zeal to remove the other blocker, exert it and Entangler for 9 damage, I could just use entangler+pathmaker (and held pump in hand) to close over a couple turns, keeping the rest as chump if needed. I lost game 2 because I get a greedy 5-lander on the draw, we both only get 5 spells but his are bigger (no surprise). Game 3 we both mull, I win because he never draws a forest with 4+ G ceatures in hand, but with my curve being so low and my cheap removal my meh hand was still stronger. #4 wins against the 0-3 player, including a colour death for his opponent too, and a slower deck that let him dig for the archfiend and play it. TL;DR I ran hot and got very lucky at several points with draws, but my 16-lands deck running multiples of several commons was so stable that even his bomb-ladden synergistic deck died more from not drawing the right cards than me to mulligan or slow starts. Clearly, I won't get to draft these decks anymore (and I won't get passed Insult // Injury pack 2, or open Angel of Sanctions P1P1, or get passed Neheb then Javelineer pack 3 when my neighbour clearly knows I'm in that pair) as people will warm up to the curve-outs. But unless the draft self-corrects a lot and R ends up a lot weaker at our tables, I think we'll still get a bunch of feel-bads when people not jumping onto the "stacked 2-drop slot" train just die without much agency. And for me being egocentric and all, I still feel bad when I see my opponents not have any fun.
