It really doesn't affect their wellbeing in any way - You can think of it as a weekly payment for having an exciting saturday while seeing the drafts on the TV. However, if you win, your entire life will change, completely. There's a chance for that to happen. It might be your only chance of ever becoming a millionaire. While the expectation is negative, the potential reward is there. Obviously if you want to have every skin in the game you could use mystery gifts to get them all. Whether or not it affects their well-being does not affect whether it is a bad use of money, only the extent to which it is bad. The chances of winning the lottery are so low they are not statistically significant even over the course of your lifetime. You know what that means? It means looking at the winning situation to justify buying the ticket is as scientifically irrational as it gets because you will, quite simply, never be the winner. The potential to change your life for the better is alluring but that's all part of the illusion of gambling. In the end the money you spend on it is still money you're not spending somewhere else: $10/week in the US is still enough to pay for a whole dinner date every month at a nice restaurant. I'd take that over an excuse to watch a TV show when there are other shows that don't need excuses and so don't cost anything extra.

And the entire class just shits themselves cause no one feels good after writing one of those. When the Chinese international students are butthurt about a math final you know something's wrong. You're basically talking about my Game Theory class, except the entire class is like that. I think I have like a 45% or something in terms of "real" grade points or something, and I (think) I'm doing alright in the class. I have no fucking clue how he's curving everything.

I always heard these stories of huge curves and I'd always be like "WHY CAN'T I GET THAT." My one friend had a class where the class average was a 32. Legit. He ended the class with a high B without ever getting higher than a 45 on a test.

The closest thing to a curve is dropping the lowest couple of grades (like my accounting class we take 13 chapter quizzes and only 10 count), or the final replaces the lowest grade too or something, but never a real curve like "lets add 40 points to the mean." He ended the class with a high B without ever getting higher than a 45 on a test. You don't want to have it curved, I literally felt like I learned nothing in that class even though I got around an 80. My prof curved by rooting your grade then multiplying it by 10. So you only needed a 25% in the end to pass. He ended up making the exam ridiculously difficult because of this, and I didn't know how to do a single question on the entire thing.

it's literally 35% of my grade.
